while i appreciate the various takes rwby fans have on volume 9, i feel as if though the fandom’s need to impose more narrative value on the dynamics that they enjoy has done a lot of damage to the overall engagement with the characters involved. i think it’s the most obvious when people try to connect ruby and neo in a way that would make them foils of one another, implying that neo was after ruby specifically due to some form of infatuation the whole time and that’s it

from where i stand i do not believe that neo has ever thought of ruby as an ultimate goal or a reason to keep on living; a lot of people interpret their dynamic as one that is closely interpersonal while the writing couldn’t be more obviously against that. it was always roman. narratively speaking you, of course, could argue that roman is ruby’s foil and as a result of that the situation could’ve been read this way, but i feel as if though such reading of the text undermines neos motivation and erases the fact that her very selfish want of revenge was hiding a very painfully human need for love and comfort that she lost. centering ruby in this denies neo a lot of her character especially considering that ruby has only come into the equation upon cinder pointing her finger at her to get neo off of her own self

people are a bit too benevolent towards cinder and emerald shipping for my liking, i feel as if though you need to write at least one or two expository essays about grooming and check out freud’s psychoanalysis related work before even thinking of going there. if you put a toxic yuri label on these two and move on with your day it becomes valueless slop
