This week, I read a fic that was around 20 years old, which had originally been posted on the author's personal website and which she added to AO3 a few years ago. She listed her email address with the fic, so after I finished reading, I sent her an email saying how much I enjoyed the story, how much I appreciated the work and effort she obviously put into it, and thanked her for uploading it to AO3. She responded the next day and thanked me for my message, then said she had a few more stories in the same series that she hadn't gotten around to uploading. I checked this morning--she added a 35,000 word novella and thanked me in the summary.

Cannot stress enough how I had no idea anyone cared about my very old fanfiction until I was reading writer I thought was amazing and they name-checked me as an inspiration in their notes. I was flabbergasted enough to contact them and eventually re-upload the fics to AO3, where a small trickle of readers have commented on them ever since. Any encouragement matters!

i feel more disgusted than normal by most social media platforms due to recent events, thankfully i am going back to uni soon where i don’t have much time for social media use without a purpose (ie endless scrolling). i’m realizing that as much as i tried not to get to this point, i truly do not know what i would do if i took all social media away from myself— would it even be beneficial? would it just make me feel more isolated? i just know that i won’t be able to get out of this black hole of the internet easily. i rely on it. but when all the ceos are incredibly ignorant and pretentious assholes, it’s starting to eat at my conscious every time i go to open x or instagram. i deleted tiktok when they started regulating searches about the election. power is the world’s greatest corrupter and i feel helpless to even fight back sometimes.

all this to say, i think i should make some changes with my social media uses, and i’m not exactly sure what that will look like or how to go about it. i have friends and family that i don’t get to see very much, and these platforms are how we stay connected. this whole thing just sucks. i feel so useless, and it feels stupid to even have this debate when there’s so many more important things that deserve my attention. i feel so lost in so many ways

i do unironically think the best artists of our generation are posting to get 20 notes and 3 reblogs btw. that fanfic with like 45 kudos is some of the best stuff ever written. those OCs you carry around have some of the richest backstories and worldbuilding someone has ever seen. please do not think that reaching only a few people when you post means your art isn't worth celebrating.
