tasmanian devil (sarcophilus harrisii)
poem i wrote for @montereybayaquarium and @mbari-blog's winter art theme. (day 11's theme was precious, which is exactly how i felt about these kids.)
full poem text underneath the cut.
based on my very real experience of working at an underfunded elementary school and being the under-trained lead teacher for a week while they learned about the ocean.
Day 11: Precious
For @montereybayaquarium ‘s Deep Sea December
🥺
Giant ostracods swim through the deep-sea midwater by rowing their large, feather-like antennae like oars. With hinged bodies much like a clam's, these crustaceans can tuck right into their pods with only their antennae showing.
Oh yeah I never posted the food studies I made for my zine application...
Here we go. It's not actually Minecraft related so it's weird to post it here but I guess it kinda is hermit delights zine related and by that kinda Minecraft related or smth like that
I think I expressed a bit of this before with the Himiko Toga picture I did a while ago, so I won’t go too in depth. This is a personal artwork that reflects how I felt as a child. I used to believe I was evil and monstrous because I was called mean, nasty, rude, selfish, etc. for a good chunk of my childhood. No one really understood me and it just felt like I only hurt the people I cared about. It didn’t help that I was raised Christian, so I literally thought that I had a demon in me. It wasn’t until recently (like late 20s, early 30s) that I let go of that narrative and embraced the fact that I’m actually a really kind person. Maybe even a little too kind, actually.
I can’t draw monsters, so the shadow looks a little cartoonish. But I hope the point still comes across.
when i was a kid i always thought these locations were haunting
Today's Deep Sea December prompt is crystal, so I painted a comb jelly!
It was a really fun challenge to paint a creature that is both transparent and iridescent. They're such cool little dudes!

Day 8: Glow
For @montereybayaquarium ‘s Deep Sea December
Sparkling siphonophores 🤩✨️
At almost 40 meters long, Praya dubia rivals other lengthy creatures like blue whales that can measure up to 30 meters, and lion’s mane jellies whose tentacles reach over 35 meters.
Giant siphonophores aren't picky eaters; they eat small crustaceans, other gelatinous animals, and often any fish larvae or small fishes they can capture. Any unsuspecting prey that is caught in their stinging tentacles is passed up to the feeding polyps and quickly consumed.
Traditionally, scientists have studied deep-sea animals by dragging a trawl net through the water, but with this method, delicate animals like Praya come up in hundreds of unrecognizable pieces. Exploring the deep midwater with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) provides an opportunity to observe these animals in their natural habitat, intact and unaltered.
