As time has gone on, the fight against AIDS has become more and more important to people that are infected and even people that aren’t. With gay rights gaining more and more equality, people have become more accepting and the world continues to change. Gay marriage has become legal across the entire US. The cure for AIDS still does not exist but there have been huge improvements towards getting HIV/AIDS patients better and healthier. This image goes off of the latest post about how people believed that they could isolate humans infected with AIDS. This newspaper article is from The New York Post in 1990.

This newspaper advertisement is a view from the opposite side. This is how the people that were homophobic or discriminatory of people with AIDS felt. They didn’t want victims to be employed at the same workplace as them, they didn’t want them shopping at the same places as them, they didn’t want them eating at the same places as them. The extremists brought up ideas to isolate the population of victims completely in order to prevent contamination of others and to get rid of the virus for good. This image is a demonstration of the privileges that the people not infected had and that they thought they could get rid of the victims and treat them as anything but humans.

The image with the tombstones is very important to the break out of protests for discrimination against AIDS. The tombstones represent the people have died from the virus. On the left hand side of the image, the tombstone says “Nothing is happening”. Many of the people suffering from the virus felt as though no one was really doing anything to help them be cured. They felt isolated from the majority of the population and this broke out even more protests from those infected. The picture that says SILENCE=DEATH is their way of saying that if everyone keeps quiet and pretends that people aren’t dying from being infected, then more and more people are gonna end up dead due to them not having the help they need so badly. This was also a popular poster seen throughout the “Act Up” protests. On the act up website, ( http://www.actupny.org/ ) states, “ACT UP is a diverse, non-partisan group of individuals united in anger and committed to direct action to end the AIDS crisis. We advise and inform. We demonstrate. WE ARE NOT SILENT!” The picture above shows protesters from ACT UP.

A big contribution to the epidemic of this horrible disease was the stigma that only gay men could obtain it. People believed that if you had HIV or AIDS, you were gay. They also believed that women couldn’t get the disease. This created a lot of chaos within the gay community, especially considering they didn’t have any equal rights back then. The picture on the left shows the LGBTQ rainbow flag with the words discrimination and stigma. This picture speaks for itself and shows the side of the protestors that wanted their own equality. The picture on the right takes us back in time to the history of when the population believed that it was a gay man’s disease. This picture is a great example of how complicated the virus was when it first broke out and how even doctors took a long time to figure out what it was. This was what led people to believe that only homosexuals could acquire the virus and in turn led to discrimination from homo-phobics.

A major part of the culture of the 90s was the discrimination of people who had HIV or AIDS. These people suffered from inequality and went through a lot of hard times dealing with the majority of the population that didn’t have AIDS. These people had strong opinions that caused many protests and heartaches of those suffering. This tumblr blog is dedicated to the souls that have been treated unequally over the past almost 4 decades while the AIDS epidemic has been a huge part of the US and many other countries. It is also a journey through the history of HIV/AIDS and the people involved.
