Just watched a documentary about a zoo in upstate New York I went to as a kid that has since closed, and apparently it was run for years by an ex-Nazi eugenicist who used the zoo as a front for a breeding program where he attempted to bring back an extinct species of cattle.
So now I'm trying to reconcile my happy childhood memories with this reminder of the darkness lurking beneath even the most innocent facades of small town life. Like, on the one hand there are my happy memories of feeding baby goats at the petting zoo with my grandparents, on the other hand, it was a real life Jurassic Park.
