if you are trapped in your childhood by someone who loves you and you’re still not able to save them, then you might become obsessed with saving other people until it comes at your own detriment

if you are blaming everyone around you for your own issues then you may feel that you are alone, and you will love the things that you feel understand you even when they don’t. and that will destroy you

there is a world that should not exist but it exists anyways and it is a mirror of all the ways that the psyche can become a warped version of itself, because the world can’t do anything to stop it from happening

Everyone in Mary's life was trying to keep her stagnant and obeying. Her mother wouldn't let her leave the house by her own strict rules, Clark wouldn't let her leave the kitchen until she said what he wanted her to, the async scientists wouldn't let her go because of the information she could provide. Her whole life was basically just being stuck in the backrooms of everyone else's creation.

and her still-life is formed sitting - perfectly still - because why would she ever have anywhere to go, when the real mary never gets to move forward? the only people left to remember her are ASYNC, and they only view her as a stranger who they cannot let leave. so she is stagnant to them, and any mirrored version of her will be stagnant too

if you don’t want to change then you won’t change, except that’s not really how it works. you don’t change for the better, but you aren’t exactly the same person as you were the day before. (you don’t change for the better, but you change nonetheless). maybe you’re a little more bitter; maybe your bark and bite get a little harder to distinguish; maybe you care a little less. (you don’t care about changing, so you change anyway and your don’t care enough to notice, so you think that you aren’t changing, but you still aren’t the same). the world thinks the same thing. it can’t see that it’s changing how it holds itself together, but it change nonetheless. the sofa didn’t look like that before; the window has melted into the wall; the carpet isn’t where it used to be. (that face is not the same face that it was). the world didn’t mean for that to happen, but it’s what happens when you don’t realise that you can’t not change. clark changed. the world changes. they didn’t mean to

some quick art of mr. clark backrooms. i am endlessly fascinated by his progression as a character.

Ryland Grace who is brought to work for ASYNC, not NASA, because they believe his skills as a physicist could be beneficial to them. because his paper on life surviving without water could be applicable to still-lifes, and they want him to look into it. Ryland Grace who can’t help but fear that there’s a deeper reason for him being there, like they’re waiting to throw him in the deep whether he wants to or not
