Sometimes when I wake up I'm a new version of me I haven't met and I don't remember where I am and I think. Like. I belonged somewhere far far away and got trapped here as a form of c o s m i c p u n i s h m e n t. Like. A sinner taken to the slaughter. And I stop sleeping and suddenly I realise these people I call my family are people I don't know OR love. But that's cruel right. And I wake up not remembering days. Weeks at a time. And suddenly the house I thought was mine feels like a prison and when I look in the mirror my face it changes every time and I feel sick and have to look away because that's not me.
And I begin fearing that I don't recognise myself in any of my memories and I dont recognise the friends the me I see in my memories fought so hard to get and I realise that I REPLACED HIM. I AM THE REPLACEMENT. And so I try to gamble my life away and I fill "my" body with meds and caffeine and I pity the "ME" I replaced so much that I run around and s l a u g h t e r everyone who ever hurt him because he deserves to rest in peace. Sometimes I wonder if I'm actually dead and this is my afterlife but haha.

Angeal is a very well written character. And that's the problem— he's too well written, and the point of his character flies over people's heads.
He's self-centered and righteous, more than happy to let others view him as a pillar of morality and as someone to look up to. He is the very definition of SOLDIER honor, or at least that's what he is depicted as through Zack's eyes (and heavens knows that Zack's perspective is extremely skewed).
The truth is that Angeal is a hypocrite. His character symbolically represents every lie that Shinra upholds to preserve its self image. Angeal betrays the people who trusted him most, hides his motivations, refuses to cooperate with anyone, and then enlists Zack to kill him because he's too much of a prideful coward to face consequences for his own actions. Honor means nothing here.
But because he is portrayed as the good guy out of the big three, the literal angel with white wings, the original wielder of the hero's sword, embodiment of morality— much of the fandom seems to accept that portrayal as fact. He's certainly not evil; none of these characters are save for Hojo obviously cough cough but fandom interpretation of Angeal often fails to peel back the thick layer of infallible honor to reveal the messy, very human core underneath, rife with juicy character flaws and opportunities for exploration. Instead we almost always get a one-dimensional Dad Mentor. And I think that's a major injustice to such a compelling character.

working on a "Cal Kestis accidentally adopts Rey as a daughter" fanfic (with timeline changes for my convenience) and it's been great working on Cal's survivor's guilt and rage and Rey's abandonment issues and loneliness and working on making them a cohesive father-daughter duo. Having a blast, great emotional stuff
But also. Dilf Cal Kestis. It's eating my brain. Yes he'll be the best father he can for Rey but for me???? How you doin' sir 👅👅👅.
Like a little extra weight and some salt and cinnamon??? Tired eyes? My GOD let me have that weary old man.
And while he tries to refrain from violence because dark side issues don't think he's an incapable combatant because he's older. He's still got it, esp when Rey eventually ends up in danger, and omg what delicious internal conflict that's gonna make. I need to finish my capstone first though it's due in a week 🤩🤩
Officially submitted my capstone and actually began formatting the fic (named The Scrappers' Allegiance* working title) on AO3. I'll have to hold myself accountable for it though I really don't want it to fizzle out after five chapters lmfao.
I also have no idea how long it's gonna be yet so bear with me while I outline the story itself and figure that out.
Cal is also losing his DILF appeal for me and falling more into the True Dad™ category in my brain so writing him emotionally is gonna be a lot easier. Damn you, Rey, why do you have to be so relatable T-T
