Women's and girls' participation and achievements in sports have a transformative impact that extends far beyond their personal lives or the

Women's and girls' participation and achievements in sports have a transformative impact that extends far beyond their personal lives or the playing field. Ensuring they can access and enjoy the benefits of sports free from all forms of violence and discrimination also contributes to eliminating inequalities and elevating the status of women and girls in society. 

The notions of safety and fairness are inextricable from the practice of sport. However, as observed by the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls in her latest report on violence against women and girls in sport (A/79/325), women and girls are increasingly being affected by the erosion of sex-separated sports categories and related spaces, resulting in the loss of fair opportunities to compete and heightened risks to their physical and psychological integrity.

Building on the findings and recommendations of the Special Rapporteur's report, this parallel event, consisting of a panel discussion and a Q&A segment, will explore these challenges in depth and identify pathways forward, focusing on human-rights based solutions while highlighting best practices at every level of sport.

In the report, the Special Rapporteur explores the forms, causes and consequences of violence against women and girls in sports, including sexual violence, coercion, gender pay gap, gender stereotypes, patriarchal structures, abusive coaches, and the general absence of robust policies and mechanisms to address abuses and protect victims. The Special Rapporteur recommends that specific safeguarding measures be implemented to prevent and respond to sexual and gender-based violence in the context of sports.

Official United Nations Commemoration of the 2023 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The commemoration of the 2023 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women will have the following objectives:

Invite everyone to be an ally in preventing VAWG through taking a stand publicly, engaging in activities and events to raise awareness of VAWG in their communities.

Mobilize all member states to allocate national budget to prevent violence against women and girls, including through their own national action plans and prevention across education, health, and social protection sectors by incorporating VAWG prevention.

Advocate for increasing ODA towards prevention of VAW, in line with national priorities and to support policy formulation, if feasible.

Call for greater support, increased long-term, sustainable investments from states, private sector, foundations, and other donors to autonomous women’s rights organizations working to end violence against women and girls in all their diversity.

Advocate for private and public sector investments on workplace policies and measures that ensure women’s economic security and safety.

Mobilize member states, development partners, philanthropies, private sector, universities and all actors to join the Generation Equality Action Coalition on GBV and make tangible policy, programmatic and financial commitments to accelerate transformative action to end all forms of gender-based violence against women and girls, including through:

o Investing in the collective commitment on prevention, and o Joining the collective commitment of the Action Coalition on GBV and the Action Coalition on Economic Justice and Rights on gender based violence and harassment in the world of work and to ratify and implement the ILO Convention 190. The Official UN Commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2023 will be a multistakeholder event with the participation of high-level representatives of Member States, women’s civil society organizations, United Nations agencies, Leaders and/or Commitment Makers of the Generation Equality Action Coalition on Gender Based Violence and Goodwill Ambassadors.

Violence against women and girls remains the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violation in the world. The COVID-19 pandemic, conflicts and climate change have exacerbated the risks for this violence and generated new threats, amplifying the vulnerability of women and girls. The solution lies in robust responses, including investment in prevention.

Under the global umbrella theme of the 2023 UNiTE Campaign: "UNiTE! Invest to Prevent Violence against Women & Girls", the event will shine a spotlight on the importance of financing prevention strategies to stop violence from occurring in the first place, galvanize action to secure increased investments and kickstart the activities of the 16 Days of Activism. The event will feature the President of the 78th Session of the General Assembly, the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Executive Directors of UN Women and UNFPA, Member States Representatives, Leaders of the Action Coalition on Gender-based Violence, members of civil society and women's rights organizations.

The media industry has an unprecedented influence on how entire societies perpetuate gender inequality, from discriminatory norms and stereotypes to the normalization of violence against girls. On the other hand, media reporting also has the immense potential to combat the root causes of violence against women and girls, promote positive social and gender norms, and support risk mitigation through the provision of essential information to survivors, victims and those who wish to support them.
