Here’s an interesting thing about French! Everything needs to have an article in front of it. That’s why it’s “la chat” as opposed to just “chat”. So, for instance, you could say la fille for the girl, or jeune fille for young girl, but you can’t just say fille, because that means you are calling her a sex worker in a derogatory way.

The moral of the story is, if you want to make something rude in French, just take out the article in front of it. Yes, this works for nearly. every. word.

Putting a British Scissors Company Back Together

In 2014, I shared a short film by Shaun Bloodworth called The Putter about Cliff Denton, a master scissors craftsman for a company called Ernest Wright & Sons.

A person who makes scissors by hand is called a putter, short for putter togetherer. The Putter is a four-minute silent film by Shaun Bloodworth that shows putter Cliff Denton making scissors.

The film went viral and the once-struggling company was inundated with orders and launched a very successful Kickstarter campaign for a special pair of kitchen scissors. But as I wrote in a sad update back in June, the company was struggling and on the verge of collapse:

Under new leadership, the company vowed to carry on and fulfill all of the Kickstarter orders, but a message to Kickstarter backers yesterday revealed the company was deep in debt and would be “going into receivership”. It also revealed that Wright had taken his own life.

In late October, a story on the company’s web site called Keeping the Heritage Alive revealed that a pair of Dutch entrepreneurs, Paul Jacobs and Jan Bart, have purchased the company with an eye towards investing in the workshop and its workers while keeping the mission the same.

When we acquired the assets of the company, there had been decades of decline and recent tragedy. The machinery was in neglect and although the workers had done all they could to keep the ship afloat, the heritage was slipping away.

To make sure that Ernest Wright continues to manufacture quality, handmade scissors, we’ve invested heavily in the workshop. By researching how to improve production, new machinery has been introduced that salutes the heritage and skill of our Putters. We’re working hard to keep the craft alive. Cliff Denton and Eric Stones, each with over 60 years worth of experience, are currently passing on their knowledge to new apprentices.

This seems like a really good outcome for the company, its employees, and the city of Sheffield. Now go buy some scissors.

Gideon Mendel’s The Ward

Memories from the heart of the Aids crisis shows true love in a time of terrible tragedy.

These heartbreaking and incredibly moving images show the affection and love shown during the height of the Aids crisis. Photographer Gideon Mendel’s project The Ward began in 1993 when he spent a number of weeks on the Charles Bell wards in London’s Middlesex Hospital. All the patients on the ward were dying with the knowledge that there was no cure for the disease. During this time antiretroviral medications were not available and patients on the ward faced the prospect of an early death.

When Lucasfilm moved to North Hollywood in 1979, Ralph McQuarrie was commissioned to draw the moving card: this great piece of work was the result.

The Burroughs 205 Datatron. 

This was maybe the most used prop for a computer in the 1960s, you can see it everywhere from Batman to Lost in Space. The reason this prop was everywhere is that during the 1950s, technicians would gut the insides of defective models, leaving only the photogenic exterior of blinking lights. So in other words, there were tons of non-functional, blinking Burroughs 205 Datatrons to use for props in TV and movies. 

The machine also had a surprisingly long shelf-life for a computer, so there were tons around for the same reason there were a lot of Volkswagen beetles. In the early 1960s, the datatron was modified to store on the new technology, magnetic reel to reel tape, and still later, it could accept input from a very new device, a game-changer known as the keyboard.

By the way, one of the chief designers of the Datatron code was a woman, Sibyl M. Rock, who encouraged people to test the code to the limit.

I was working at a promotional product company as their graphic designer and I had created a design for a customized bracelet.

Client: Can you make that black blacker?

Me: Well…it’s as black as it can go.

Client: No…make it blacker.

Me: It really is as black as it can go.

Client: How do you know for sure? It doesn’t look very black to me.

Me: (knowing she wouldn’t know what this meant and HOPING it would shut them up) Because the hex code is #000000.

Client: Do you expect me to know what all of your coding words are? Just make it blacker, please.

Me: (later, after not changing a damned thing) …Okay, I made it blacker.

Client: (takes a look) MUCH better!
