Quick Bit
January 1, 1970 aka when time began according to UNIX.
Information Byte: Multics
Multics is an early time sharing operating system. Who are the fathers? Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie as part of a collaborative effort between Bell Labs, General Electric and MIT.
Multics stands for Multiplexed Information and Computing Service, but if you ask Ken Thompson Multics is an example of everything an OS shouldn’t be. Evidently Multics is over designed, over built, over everything. This made it close to unusable. However, despite being close to unusable Multics still heralded in some game changing concepts we see now in modern operating systems today such as a hierarchical file system and the shell.
After Multix creaters Ken Thompsona and Dennis Ritchie created Unix, a future topic for an information byte.
