Enid Marr was surrounded by death from the day she was born. Her parents had never planned on bringing a child into their lives, at least not at the time. Her father, Albert Marr, owned a funeral home in Kismet Harbor, where he and his wife, Isabella Marr, worked as funeral directors. They were in the funeral home more often than not, and had very little time for themselves, so, when Isabella fell pregnant, they were worried for the future of their business. It wasn't long before the birth of their child. Isabella took as much time off of work as she could, which left Albert juggling both the funeral planning and caring for the deceased.
When Enid turned ten months old, her mother returned back to her job, and Enid was left with her grandparents. Despite her parents not being around as often as they'd liked, Enid still had a good childhood. Her grandparents gave her everything she needed, and spoiled her as much as they could. On the days her parents had off, they soaked up as much time as they could with their baby, going onto small day trips and park visits. Their lives were crazy, but they made the most time for their daughter.
At two years old, Enid's grandma passed, and shortly after, so did her grandpa. At that age, she wasn't nearly old enough to understand, but as she aged, she slowly realized how permanent their passing really was. With nobody to watch Enid, she spent a lot of time with her parents at the funeral home. By five years old, she'd sat through hundreds of funerals, and began to understand more about what 'death' really meant. As much as her parents wanted to shield her from what the end of life meant, it became nearly impossible for them, and they explained more and more to Enid as she grew.
A childhood in a funeral home wasn't exactly normal for most, but for Enid, it was all she knew. At seven, she was becoming more familiar with the dead; helping her mother arrange flowers, or sitting outside of the embalming room while her father prepared the next body, peering through the small window of the door to try and get a peek at the procedures. Her curiosity was growing, and she wanted to know every detail of her parents' jobs. By now, there was no shielding their daughter from the reality their jobs carried. While her parents were working, her playground became the coffin room. Oftentimes, her father would invite Enid down to the embalming room after the process was done, and he'd explain to her the procedures he'd taken while putting makeup on the bodies. Every day after school, she'd come to the home to see what kind of things she could help with.
Enid was surprisingly very well liked by the kids in her class, and they'd often beg to come with her to the funeral home after school. She hosted a couple of sleepovers with some of her friends in the home, and she'd carry out pranks to try and scare them: flickering the lights on and off, dropping items when she went to the washroom and convincing them it was a ghost, or using a Ouija Board to try and contact 'spirits'.
When highschool came around, Enid Marr already knew exactly what it was she wanted to do—she wanted to be a funeral director just like her parents. At this point, she had accompanied her father in several embalmings, watching closely to catch every detail of every operation needed to make someone's family member look like themselves again. Her ultimate goal before graduating was to learn all the ins and out of her father's career, so she could work alongside him one day.
Enid graduated high school, and shortly after applied at Mt. Hood Community College for an Associate of Applied Science degree. Waiting to begin college was one of the longest summers she'd had. With the anticipation came many attempts to find something to pass the time. In between helping at the funeral home and hanging out with friends, Enid gained a particular interest in botany, something she picked up from exploring her local forest. In her down time, she'd pick up books from the library and study plants and their uses.
At the end of the summer, Enid was eager to begin her venture into a new phase of her life. College proved to be a lot for Enid, but it was an experience she would be forever grateful to have. Being that she was busy in school, she had very little time to spend at the funeral home, and any time she did spend there, she was simply doing homework. She missed being there so much, but she knew when she was done school, she would be able to be there full time.
After two years of hard work and dedication, Enid received her Associate of Applied Science degree and began her apprenticeship under her father. Being that she had seen a lot of what her father's job entailed growing up, she already had more experience than most freshly graduated students. She had many jobs while working there: preparing the deceased, speaking to families, and helping set up for funerals were a few of her tasks. She worked incredibly hard for her position within the funeral home, and after completing her apprenticeship, she secured a position as a funeral director.
Now, she is working towards purchasing her own home, and continues to live with her mother and father until then. She spends a lot of time in the funeral home, but in her free time practices witchcraft, using her foraged plants in her practice.
