After dropping Stevie off with her mother Holly Rivers set out for a new life and ended working at a luxury casino in Vegas as a card dealer. To most this was a dream job, but to Holly it was an opportunity. This way she was constantly rubbing elbow with men and women of power, which is exactly how she met David Adams. He was a flashy man from New York. While David was married, it wasn’t like Holly cared when he footed the bill to her now upscale life filled with anything she could want and a condo on the strip. She only had to make time for David when he came in town, she was truly living the dream. That was until she fell pregnant for a second time.
While David refused to leave his wife Holly wasn’t about to give up her meal ticket. She had just locked David in for the next 18 years of his life. So while he suggested abortion, Holly refused saying she this was her one shot to have a baby, to keep his secret all he had to do was continue to fund her lifestyle and support his daughter, which he was more than happy to do from the shadows.
By the time Alex was eight Holly had taught her how to be invisible in a crowded room, she hung out in kitchens, closets, and sometimes empty hotel rooms. Mostly watching old sitcoms reruns or movies while her mother worked or hung out with whatever main squeeze she had at the moment. She truly only kept Alex around to secure her meal ticket, but that luck ran out when David died of a heart attack and left nothing to Holly or Alex. What had once been his secret, would stay that way for the rest of time.
With David dead and Holly’s starting to age she came up with a plan, they were going to scam whatever rich man they could. Holly would get them to fall in love with her and pretend to be the perfect woman, while Alex, her job was to be the cute little invisibility daughter. Holly’s plan would last for almost two decades, with even Alex joining in as she became an adult. Appearing as a friend, sister, and sometimes a daughter or whatever Holly needed for the moment. They never stayed in one place for too long, just enough to con the man out of enough money so they could live comfortably.
As Alex grew older though the appeal of this lifestyle was lost on her, she wanted normalcy. Or well as much of it as a girl like her could actually get. So she promised her mom one last con, then they would be done. However, what Alex hadn’t planned for was meeting that man that would change her life, Maxwell Von Deutch. He was rich, handsome, and genuine. For a while they lived in bliss, that was until Alex actually fell in love with him. Holly was furious since money was starting to get tight once more, however Alex simply didn’t care. After a year the two were engaged, the wedding plans of the century started. At first Alex was thrilled, but the more she prepared, the more she realized that everything she loved about the weddings she’d been too was because Holly had forced her to love it. Now having to decide what she actually wanted and liked left her confused. So she did what she always did and picked what Maxwell would want and what society would want from someone like her.
By the time the wedding rolled around Alex felt like it was a mistake, but at the end of the day a part of her really did love Maxwell, so she stuck it out. That was until Holly gave her a picture of what she thought was Alex as a baby, but not only was it not Alex the date was off and a few years before Alex was even born. Despite Holly’s attempt to clean up the mess she’d just made by saying it was a friend’s baby, nobody knew Holly’s lies better than Alex. Eventually after more pressing Holly came clean about Stevie.
As her world shattered around her Alex took off out of the church. Hailing down a man on a motorcycle, she jumped on the back. Going anywhere but with Holly despite her mother trying to follow at first. By the time she made it to a local diner outside of the city she had found Stevie. Wanting actual answers and not more lies Alex headed to Kismet Harbor, where her life would only just begin, for once she could start over and just be Alex… Maybe this time with an actual family.
