meeting renesmee helped a lot with jennifer’s self-hatred and contributed greatly to a crucial period of personal and emotional growth.   how could jennifer hate the thing she is so fiercely if renesmee is so loved by so many people?   if such love is possible for monsters like them, especially in a parental sense (something jen has never really experienced), isn’t her self-hatred be an insult to that?   to herself, most of all?

perhaps she could be loved this way, too, and when she sees how her life could have been, could still be, jennifer finally learns that the only thing holding her back is herself, and the source of this revelation is renesmee.

         his weight lists from one foot to the other, a hand absently scratching at the cusp of his jaw. “yeah, that’s fair.” a shrug comes forth, & stiles shifts back. hands coming forth to fiddle with each other in an attempt at indifference. “—but you can’t really blame me ——- right?”

"i guess not,"  there's a half-smile that stretches across her lips, looking embarrassed and perhaps a little nervous.   she guesses she has no reason to be;   his reaction is normal, human, and he hasn't yet run screaming.   that's a plus, right?   "i mean,"  she begins, taking his lead and shifting her weight onto the other foot.   to clear the nerves.   there's a spark of humor in her cerulean blue eyes.   "i am a little insulted that you think i just, you know---  eat everyone i meet."

jennifer was not an easy child.

serena had her hands full while raising her.  as joham’s eldest child (and the only child that he had raised himself), serena’s personality mirrored joham’s a little too much.  while caring for jennifer, she had the same authoritarian disposition that joham did with none of the disinterest;  meaning that serena was always around to police her whereas joham’s visits were more sporadic, and usually only used as a way to keep jennifer as close as possible.  —  jennifer found it suffocating and oppressive, and she often ran away for days at a time.

jennifer was part human too, and with a dhampir’s rapid growth her childhood went by too fast.  she was suddenly expected to learn and behave and adopt the harsh beliefs that her father and sister shared (especially in regards to humans – jennifer has always been more understanding of humans than her father, who has killed numerous human women just for the sake of his inhumane dhampir “experiments”).  she just wanted to live and explore and express herself openly, with the freedom to experience things without influence and form her own beliefs and she made that known.  she was very rebellious in nature and always challenged the things she was taught.  she made it a point to see things for herself, which wasn’t always received well;  serena was often arguing with her about things like this, which made their relationship a little unpredictable until jennifer left to become a nomad.  they were raised very differently and it showed.

sidenote:  jennifer very much takes after her mother, who was a free,  adventurous spirit with a curiosity that was almost insatiable.  [there will be a meta post about jen’s mom soon!]  jennifer does not consciously know this because her knowledge of her mother is limited.

      𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐎𝐔𝐒 𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐀𝐂𝐋𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘,    divination in the form of humanity and vampirism brought to an unholy matrimony in the body of one.    it was this that joham was obsessed with, likely ever since he had first taken hold of booth’s hand hundreds of years ago,     and felt within his grasp,     the beat of a pulse within marble skin.       part of the dhampir puts blame on himself for the suffering of jennifer and her siblings, while another part knew that what had been done was likely inevitable—   whether or not he had met joham,  whether or not his father had permitted the man to study him.       gritting teeth,  his composure remains steely outwardly…    eyes never once glancing down to the girl, but rather towards the horizon, cherry red at the edges where the sun began to sink downwards past their earthly domain.  

“ your father is a madman, jennifer. “   booth spoke low,  thought swirling behind steely eyes.  “ there’s no telling what he’s planning—     but whatever it is,       it’s worried your brother beyond recompense,       and i promised him that i would protect you from whatever it is to come. “

there's a moment where hurt shines in her gaze.   it lasts no more than a second,  just long enough for her to remind herself that her father's actions are not her own.   they are not her fault.   he is his own person,  and the blame falls only on him.   "i know what he is..."   and when she looks up, she's thankful booth isn’t looking at her and discerning her momentary lapse, but then she notices the way his eyes absently stare and it makes sudden anger boil beneath her marble skin.   [  isn't this familiar?   don't you know that look?  ]

"look at me,"  the words come as a quiet hiss as she reaches up to shove booth,  to shake him out of whatever darkness he's pulled himself into,   "don't do that."   she sees it within his unflinching gaze;  unlike the devouring emptiness that often plagues her own,  his mortal eyes are brimming with the endlessness of the past.   what could be so horrible that he would keep it from her, she doesn't know,  but the question burns against her tongue, demanding to be voiced;   "where did you go, booth?   i need--  i need you to be here.   and i need you to stop worrying about protecting me when you know i can protect myself.   nahuel is the one running off on a suicide mission!   are we supposed to let him just because he asked?"

the best part about the twilight rpc is that we have free rein to do what we please with canon characters’ portrayals because we all collectively hate the source material.

I recognize that canon has made a decision. But given that it’s a stupid ass decision, I’ve elected to continue to ignore it.

you know how joham reached out to other vampires with the intent of incorporating them in his “experiments” so that his own children might have dhampir mates of their own?  i have this headcanon that in order for joham to keep his half-breed children completely a secret, he had to kill these vampires if they didn’t agree or if they didn’t have the self-control to go through with it.  if he didn’t, i’d imagine word would have gotten back to aro fairly quickly, especially when he has the power to know every thought and memory a person has ever had with one touch.  secrets typically don’t stay secret very long when more than a few people are involved.

i also headcanon that this was not out of love, or whatever semblance of it that he holds for his dhampir children.  it took him sixty years before serena became his first success story, and it didn’t become easy after her either.  it took him another ten years for maysun and then thirty for nahuel.  another 140(ish) years before jennifer.  he’d hate to have the fruits of his efforts die.

okay but highkey i feel like if vampires were ever to reveal their existence to humans, jennifer would definitely become a vital part of joining their two words together. not just because she’s genetically part of both, but because she genuinely empathizes with humans. she can see the beauty and the uniqueness that makes them all amazing in different ways and she doesn’t view them as disposable. to her they’re valuable in more ways than just food.

the dhampir notices her eyes first;  they blend in with the forest, green like the leaves beneath her bare feet and kind like the moonlight against her skin.   the urgency comes next, and the possible threat never registers.   jennifer ducks her head and hopes the subtle light doesn't illuminate the fresh blood coloring the recesses of her lips.   she'd recently fed.   animal this time, out of convenience, but still a long road away from normal.   "i'm—"   she pauses to brush the end of a long sleeve across her mouth, gaze returning only a second later,   "i'm okay."   she isn't sure what to add.   however frequent, the lies don't come easy.   [  humans aren't in the forests this late.   what excuse do you use now?  ]   after a long pause,   "no, i just, um—  i needed to clear my head.   i think i might be a little lost."

"i have to follow him, booth.   he can't go alone."   fear envelopes her hummingbird heart;  nahuel would die in a fight against joham.   they both would,  even if booth thought otherwise.   and despite the way a familiar comfort seeps into her bones with his arm over her shoulders, her jaw sets with determination.   [  brother not by blood, but by choice.   a bond stronger than blood alone.  ]   booth always made her feel safe, but now she needs her fear for her brother to motivate her;  she isn't brave enough without it.   "you can't make me stay,"  a single step taken backward, but her fingers still hold a fistful of his shirt;  uneasy, unsure.   would joham come for booth if she failed?  [  can you fail a plan you haven't yet created?  ]   "i know he asked you to.   did he tell you what he was planning, too?   i'd rather not go in blind."
