Idk I saw some art of boromir looking at the ring and i decided i wanted to make a bunch of people look at it. even him

straight up copied the tom bombadil from lotro this time because i wanted to draw him immediately without having to design him first

These are excellent. This makes me realize everyone looks at the ring the same way different people would look at a dead mouse. Tom Bombadil looks at it the way that a preteen boy looks at a dead mouse.

But seriously though... I think the lighting and shadow really add to the emotion and drama here.

Going through old project files.

I used to make little music video animatics to go along with my fanfictions and it sounded fun to try to do that now, but I'm all grown up so I thought I could fully animate it. This is as far as I've gotten.

What's stopping me from finishing this is not the hours of effort it would take to create cringe, but the fact that I can't pick a song (part of the problem is that I can't decide whether to be funny/ironic or double down and treat my gollum crackfic with grave seriousness and pick something angsty and dramatic. I tried picking a silly-angsty song that would do both, and I didn't like the result)

I should finish the animations that have nothing to do with the fic. I could post them without needing any context.

These are all really good! I enjoy them a lot. Especially the one where the hand extends and closes. Interesting how just seeing that makes me know exactly which scene it is supposed to depict.

I think How'd You Hear Me and And the Hound are good angsty Gollum-related songs

Sometimes the way Tolkien describes things is so poetic. This part of LOTR has my favorite writing.

I did have a poke bowl today so raw fish can be pretty good, that said, Gollum usually isn't that fussy about the preparation.

But I get like... a couple of mice or a chipmunk if I'm lucky so

Tove Jansson’s illustrations of Bilbo Baggins are my absolute favorite. I’m obsessed with the Roundness. He’s an officially certified Little Guy

There’s also something so powerful about seeing such a small round character design suddenly whip out a sword:

I do wish people knew more about Book!Frodo vs. Movie!Frodo. Like, I love Elijah Wood and I love his performance but Book!Frodo is a lot more scrappy and not quite as pure of heart, despite still being a pretty nice guy. Because it leads to a lot of fanon that because Frodo is quiet and nice, he's therefore helpless, sanctimonious, and childlike.

Like Frodo is probably the most polite of the four hobbits, but he's also the oldest. A lot of his interactions with Merry and Pippin specifically read like he's an older and wiser big brother who enjoys teasing them. The movie kinda acts like Frodo is naive to a lot of Merry and Pippin's hijinks, but the books are clear that Frodo was also out there stealing crops from Farmer Magot, and it was probably his idea in the first place.

He's not above practical jokes, or being petty, or losing his temper. When they first set out from the Shire, a cute character detail is Frodo choosing to wake up everybody in kind of funny ways, scaring Sam awake by making him think he's slept in and is late for work, and yanking Pippin's blankets and basically rolling him down a hill. He's king of veiled insults and trying to let out his depression in funny ways like saying "Let's not worry about tomorrow, it probably won't come." Like when Sam thinks Frodo's messing with him when he starts saying Sam should be called the Stout-Hearted, it's not like there isn't a precedent for that kind of thing.

The movie also omits a lot of Frodo's badass moments and qualities, like when he manages to just barely cut the Witch King of Angmar on Weathertop, or when he makes his stand at the River while being chased by Nazgûl, or when he slices off the arm of the Barrow-wight, or when he confronts Sarumon. He also is the only of the four hobbits who can speak some elvish and is definitely the most worldly because he's spent so long with Bilbo. Usually most of the hobbits look to Frodo for advice or guidance.

And to be clear, he is nice and modest and very polite and compassionate towards others. Like he's always making an effort to be kind. But he has layers, and is a mature adult who I think is reduced by a lot of his sweet cinnamon roll characterization. In actuality he's more like cool older bro who lets you stay up late when he babysits and who's trying not to let anyone else know he's in the middle of a break down.

I think something that really haunts the narrative in "Return of the King" is Frodo's sense of humor. Frodo is this lighthearted jokester but towards the end he finally breaks down and can't even make an effort for humor any more. His funny bone died. :(

Denethor and the palantír

The breaking strain of Denethor’s confrontation of Sauron must be distinguished from the general strain of using the Stone. The latter Denethor thought he could endure (and not without reason) …

It may be noted that the effects were different. Saruman fell under the domination of Sauron and desired his victory, or no longer opposed it. Denethor remained steadfast in his rejection of Sauron, but was made to believe that his victory was inevitable, and so fell into despair. The reasons for this difference were no doubt that in the first place Denethor was a man of great strength of will, and maintained the integrity of his personality until the final blow of the (apparently) mortal wound of his only surviving son. He was proud, but this was by no means merely personal: he loved Gondor and its people, and deemed himself appointed by destiny to lead them in this desperate time. And in the second place the Anor-stone was his by right, and nothing but expediency was against his use of it in his grave anxieties. He must have guessed that the Ithil-stone was in evil hands, and risked contact with it, trusting his strength. His trust was not entirely unjustified. Sauron failed to dominate him.

my favorite scene in LotR as a kid was when Sam started miserably freestyling in the tower of Cirith Ungol and the only reason he ever found Frodo was because he deliriously tried to join in

…i did read some of the novels, but i couldn’t get through them entirely…

…and so i genuinely have no idea whether or not this is serious. coz i mean, obviously, it could be a joke. but it could also have legitimately happened. people who have only seen the films underestimate the amount of random things that happen in the books that could come off as utterly silly and ridiculous if removed from their context.

Haha, well, it is pretty much what happens. Sam is looking for Frodo in the tower of Cirith Ungol and is despairing that he will ever find him. He sits down and does what any self-respecting Tolkien character does during their moments of hopelessness and bursts into song.

It’s a really good song (ten year old Ship had it memorized) and as he begins the refrain a second time, he hears Frodo’s voice answering weakly from above. Frodo is poisoned and despairing and beaten but he is still a Hobbit and cannot resist a singalong even while on the brink of death.
