IPL 5 - 2012

As the 5th instalment of the Indian Premier League comes down to the final matches, there are 3 teams left that have prevailed over all to not only fight for the title, but will also battle  out to become the champions of champions in next year’s Champions League T20.

Looking to become champions for the third time running, Chennai Super Kings are to play league toppers Delhi Daredevils for the right to play already qualified Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR had a convincing victory over the Daredevils in the first qualifier to get their place in the IPL 5 final. By batting first and getting a competitive score of 162/4 off of their allocated 20 overs and then bowling to keep Delhi to 144/8, Kolkata will now face either Chennai or Delhi in the final.

As for Chennai, they progressed to the second qualifier after finishing 4th in the league by net run rate ahead of Royal Challengers Bangalore and then winning against Mumbai Indians in the eliminator, getting 187/5 themselves and then restricting MI to 149/9.

Captains MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag will try to lead their teams to victory later on for the chance to win the IPL title against Gautam Gambhir’s Kolkata Knight Riders. Personally, I hope that Chennai win even though I am a Royal Challengers Bangalore fan. Let’s see if KKR or DD can claim their first IPL victory or Chennai will complete their hattrick.

This week in sport

In football, On Thursday night, Manchester United suffered a horrific defeat at home to Athletic Bilbao after a strong first half. Two goals from Wayne Rooney, at the 22nd and 90th minute, couldn’t stop Athletic Bilbao’s three goals from llorente (44th) De marcos (72nd) and Munian (90th)

Meanwhile at the six nations, there was a draw between Ireland and France at Stade de France, with France pulling off a draw with an 11 point deficit against a defiant Ireland team.

At the Team GB for the Olympics, Rebecca Adlington has secured her place for this year’s London 2012 Olympic, while the world indoor championship are underway, with world indoor pentathlon champion Jessica Ennis seeking to defend her title.

In Dubai, Roger Federer had beaten Andy Murray for the Dubai Championships.

A stylish turn-out for World Book Day at Cowes Enterprise College

Many of the students in KS3 have spent the last couple of weeks writing their entries for Radio 2’s national ‘500 Words’ story competition; the College is running a book jacket design competition and dozens of students and staff came in dressed as their favourite book character, representing everything from The Borrowers and Diary of a Wimpy Kid to Spiderman and the Storm Cat from children’s classic The Mousehole Cat.  In addition to this, staff have been commenting on their favourite reads via the Enterprise Post, the College’s student blog, (enterprisepost.tumblr.com) and students were given the opportunity to vote on their top novel.  

Joe Cody, the leader of KS3 English at the College, was delighted with the enthusiasm shown by the students, “Reading, in addition to providing you with enough entertainment and information to last a life time, is one of the best ways to improve your mind, your grades and your life skills.  Read books; read newspapers and magazines; read blogs, recipes and cereal packets.  You’ll never regret the texts you did read, only the ones you didn’t.”

Dos Santos set to pack a punch

Dos Santos, 27, became champion on the UFC's heavily promoted debut fight card on Fox inside the Honda Centre in November. Dos Santos needed just 64 seconds to defeat then-unbeaten champion Cain Velasquez by first-round knockout.

The anticipation for a showdown with Overeem intensified after Overeem made his UFC debut with a dominant beating of former UFC champion Brock Lesnar on Dec. 30, needing just 2:26 of the first round to kick Lesnar to the canvas and finish him off with a barrage of punches. Lesnar announced his retirement after that fight...

Sadly no success for CEC at Youth Speaks finals

Last week 3 talented Year 11s, Jack Lyne Megan Inett and Jenny Stokell, took part in the Divisional Finals at Test Valley School in Stockbridge.

All 7 teams in the competition competed at an extremely high standard however the deserving winners were the team from Bishops Wordsworth, with a rousing speech entitled ‘Let us not confuse antiquity with genius.’ Unfortunately, the Cowes Enterprise College didn’t get placed even after giving the best performance they could.

The team is anticipant to re-enter next year and give it another go after gaining valuable knowledge of the arrangements and a whole load of experience. Megan Inett said “It’s been a great event and I can’t wait to participate again next year, hopefully to win though!”

Kony 2012 Campaign

The campaign was started by Invisible Children, a movement who are seeking to end the wars in Uganda and stop the abduction of the children. The thirty minute film follows a boy in Uganda called Jacob, who was a past child soldier in Kony’s war.

There are ways to donate to help arrest Kony, you can sign the pledge or you can buy one of their Kony kits, or you can donate money. There is also a ‘cover the streets to find Kony’ happening on the island, in which you go around and stick posters, stickers etc. all over the island. It is happening on the 20th April 2012. If you would like to take part in this, you can find the information on Facebook.

However, there are many rumours that this is fake. Whether it is or not, I don’t know.

E4's Skins axed for good

The highly-explicit drama focuses on a group of rambunctious teenagers living the wild life in Bristol. Since its debut in 2007, E4’s signature show has gained itself an impressive 1.4 million regular viewers, as well as BAFTAs for its talented young cast and even Brit awards for its brilliantly selected soundtrack. Despite its success, Skins will be wiped from our screens in 2013 at the end of its 7th and final series. The last 3 episodes are set to be feature-length specials, uniting the original cast from series 1 of the programme, dubbed ‘the first generation’, with the actors who currently star in the show. Between 2007 and now, three different casts have taken the main roles in Skins.

When the first episode was broadcast on January 25th, 2007, viewers were both shocked and fascinated with the partying, drinking, drug-taking habits of characters such as Tony and Effy Stonem, Sid Jenkins, Cassie Ainsworth and Chris Miles. However, it seems the increasingly wild lifestyles of the teenagers in the show have failed to impress of late – ratings have dropped to an all-time low and, having received hundreds of complaints from viewers regarding the strictly adult themes featured, Channel 4 have decided that it is time for the curtain to finally fall on Skins.

“I’ve watched it since series 1 and am very sad to see it go,” says Amy, year 11.

“Skins is one of my favourite programmes!” says Hannah, also year 11. “As much as society hates to admit it, it shows some of the issues that teenagers have to deal with nowadays – everyone can relate to it. We all go through the same problems the characters in Skins do.”

Twister Trouble Hits USA

Kentucky, Alamba, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana and Kansas have been the states that are affected by the major damage the tornadoes have caused.

A 15 month old toddler was found after the impact, fortunately she survived the strong gusting, debris filled twister in her hometown of New Pekin, Indiana. Authorities say that was picked up by the tornado 10 miles, she was later found alone with serious head injuries in a field after she was swept away. Sadly her family died from the tornado flattening there home and memories to the ground, a further 39 people have known to have been killed from the terrible tornadoes.

90 tornadoes were recorded on that Friday and over 700 severe weather warnings were given out to selected states.

Mount Kenya was one of the most exciting and tiring experiences I have ever undergone. Kenya, being one of the most beautiful countries in Africa, was the perfect environment for the climb. With its stunning views and extravagant scenery it was very interesting all the way to the summit.

My whole experience in Kenya really did show me how bad the conditions are for some people in the world, however, most welcomed us with their hearts open.

It's about a lost boy who is brought up by wolves and taken in by nuns and when they try to civilise him they fail because he is as wild as the wolves who brought him up.
