Update for Europeans: There's no button for you because I specifically wanted to find out if there's overlap between non-Europeans who get invested in the Gävle goat (a European seasonal event) and non-Europeans who get invested in Eurovision (another European seasonal event). The Swedish button is just for fun, and to encourage Swedes to share the poll! In retrospect, the vanilla button should have included Europeans but tbh I didn't think y'all would feel so left out 😅 I appreciate any Europeans who want to share this even though it's not about you!

Thanks everyone who voted and shared! This is hands-down the most successful poll I've ever done, in terms of responses. It wasn't entirely the result I expected (or it didn't find enough Eurovision fans, possibly), but you always learn something anyway.

For example, I genuinely did not realize how big the Gävle goat was on Tumblr! But based on y'all's responses, a lot of you view it as being basically a "Tumblr thing," just as much as Goncharov or the president's shoelaces. That was unexpected for me, since I learned about it off Tumblr (from the same friends who introduced me to Eurovision) and I'm in a Discord that has very few Tumblr users in it, but has a whole #gavlewatch channel.

Although my theory that there would be an appreciable overlap was more or less disproved, I was at least right that Eurovision fans on Tumblr are more than twice as likely to be familiar with the Gävle goat than not! I'll take it, I guess 😅

I'm going to end this with two reminders:

Not every poll is trying to poll all of Tumblr! If the poll writer didn't include an answer that reflects you, ask yourself: "Am I the target audience?"

Just heard the 2006 UK Eurovision entry for the first time, which I can only describe as "Vitamin C for chavs."

When I found out what this guy had previously made his career on, it all made sense: he released almost exclusively that species of remix/cover of an existing popular song where you replace the verses with rapping but retain the memorable chorus. This is an attempt to write a song like that from the ground up, so you don't have to pay for a sample -- and can submit it to Eurovision.

UPDATE: Sorry, but upon further reflection I have decided this is actually Jay-Z's "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)" for chavs.

Went to a local show last night and there was this adorable couple there who looked like transmasc Käärijä and Häärijä. I mean they looked alike and different in exactly the ways that Käärijä and Häärijä look alike and different. They had bowl cuts and everything. They were covered in glitter and grinding on each other to a queer dance pop band called Sprig. It was amazing.

I just saw a video of KAJ's "Vorjeans" project for the first time, and was surprised -- I'd heard it described as a parody rockabilly band, but it looked to me more like it fit in the 2000s radio country sphere, more Toby Keith than Stray Cats. I figured it must be based on a Finnish or Swedish subculture I'm not familiar with, so I looked into it, but then I was only more confused.

All the text I have seen about this "raggare" subculture refers to it as being inspired by American rockabilly culture, but all the photos I've seen look more like hillbillies -- fans of the classic rock/outlaw country sphere, aka southern fried rock. Your Lynryd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet fans who ride Harleys -- honestly, a little more motorcycle culture than car culture. Like the English Wikipedia article for Raggare features a photo described as depicting "two stereotypical raggare," and those guys are NOT rockabilly: they're wearing leather vests with confederate flags on them, for fuck's sake! They have mutton chops! Literally no American would identify that as "rockabilly," or even as related to "50s car culture" -- those are NASCAR fans at best!

Either those photos are misleading (and I would be curious to hear from nordic people who know), or this subculture is seriously messy -- a real smörgåsbord of American influences, if you will.
