“okay, that’s true.” tim is pacing in front of levi’s desk, a delighted light in his eyes. his hands move when he talks and he pauses every few steps to bounce on his toes. “but you can’t deny that mythologizing these subjects makes it hard to tell truth from fiction. muddies the waters. because a good potion of them aren’t true. and that’s not even getting into the details that get added with each pass around of the myth. each time it gets harder to pick out the threads. i’m not saying we should discount myth entirely, just that we shouldn’t jump to them first. both because there’s less chance and because they take longer to sort out.

“they have a time and place, i think. personally, i’m more interested in things i can pin down with some level of certainty when it comes to statement follow up. or something to track down. myths are for free time when i’ve got the availability to pick them apart. find the little grains hiding away.” he finally stops pacing and turns to face levi fully, half smiling.

His eyes flickered down to the phone, then back up to Tim. What a shame. Hopefully, Jon would see this as a sign that his technique needed improving. Come to think of it, perhaps this was just the thing to inspire him to put a bit more effort into it. Releasing a breath through his teeth, Elias slid the phone back towards Tim and reclined in his seat, lacing his fingers. “Yes, I agree. This is entirely unacceptable. Though I– must state for the record that you have both been through an immensely traumatic experience. That’s no excuse, of course, but we can hope that his intentions were, ah– not malicious, at the very least.”

he pushes back from the desk, paces and runs a hand through his hair. “it definitely isn’t an excuse. i went through the exact same thing and i’m not struck with the urge to stalk my coworkers. you have to talk to him. tell him to stop before i tell him to stop.” there’s something to his tone that indicates if he’s the one to talk to jon, a trip to the hospital might be in order.

None of this was good. He hadn’t bled in a long time, and he had no bones to break, but he could still remember when that hadn’t been the case. How many split lips, rolled ankles, and broken noses had he recovered from, before recovery had been a pipe dream? Usually he’d taken care of himself in his bedroom, with the first aid kit he kept under the mattress, but there had been a few occasions when he’d gone to the hospital. If he walked into an ER ( A&E, he had to remember that ) now, he’d probably be carted off to the morgue. Or some sort of government research facility.

Did this warrant a hospital trip? He could never quite tell where Evan stood on the scale of human to thing. Things had their own name, but recalling it was a crapshoot at the best of times. Best to err on the side of caution and start off for the center of the city. Maybe someone would pick them up along the way and give them a ride. “I know h–ow that feels,” he offered, and winced as his breath whistled through his empty throat again. Maybe the voice module he’d implanted needed adjusting. It had been working wonders at making him coherent. He forced a swallow, not questioning the physics of it, and tried again. “It’s really like, man, I probably hate them more than you do. Why are you hitting me?”

he laughs weakly, nods. his head tips to mike’s shoulder. “i definitely hate them more than any of these guys. except maybe aaron. i think his chip is just a little larger.” the world is fuzzy at the edges, lights blur and stretch. concussion. he’s never had one himself but his mind can’t help but recall his medical classes, the diagnostic criteria drilled into his head even though he didn’t plan on ever working at an a&e. his head feels heavy and he squeezes his eyes shut for a moment.

a crack in the sidewalk catches him and he staggers. he gasps when it jostles his rib, clings to mike and tries to regain his balance. “s-sorry.”

“You’d think a big guy like you would’ve put them off. Don’t try to get up on your own.” He positioned himself next to Evan and slid an arm under his chest, carefully levering him upright. The van was long gone, and the two idiots with the obnoxious accents with it. Mike had been too slow, again. He hadn’t expected to find somebody else at the scene, though – and he wouldn’t have guessed that it would be Evan. ( Funny, he almost never remembered names nowadays. Everything was so– best not to think about that. ) “You do something to piss them off?”

“nngh.” evan winces when mike helps him up. at least one rib is probably broken and he’s bleeding from his lip. his head throbs, the world spins and he leans into mike slightly. “existing, maybe. a surprising amount of people don’t like my family. look at me and just see ‘lukas’. and the remaining amount hate me for leaving. or want me for一 other reasons.” he sighs, sags against mike a little more.

“them in particular, though, could be for any reason. stranger, you know.” does mike know? evan doesn’t actually know if mike knows. his head spins. but then, he doesn’t bleed. left all his blood in utah, wherever that was. so he must know.

evan rubs the back of his neck and laughs self-consciously. “sorry, i’ve gotten used to talking to people who know pretty much everything. those eye types一 well, you wouldn’t know, i guess. i can start from the beginning, if you want.” having mike over is kind of nice, evan has decided. it’s refreshing. mike doesn’t know anything about their world despite likely being part of it, even if he doesn’t realize yet. and sure, he’s a little weird, but evan can understand that. he was incredibly weird too when he first escaped the family.

“there’s quite a lot to go over but i’m happy to share the basics. the fears, the way they work. everyone you’ve met so far’s kind of… place in it all. pretty much all of us are, to some level or another. with tim and i at the bottom and elias and aaron at the top.”

“Sorry, you said he was what?” He forced his eyebrows up, injected a touch of disbelief into his tone – real, but drawn from the wrong source. Of course he Knew that Jon had been following his coworkers off-hours; he’d been delighted to See it. The oozing paranoia from the basement was doing wonders for his skin, and Watching Jon give in to that paranoia time and again, sawing frantically at his relationships like a fox in a trap gnawing off its own leg… spectacular. For one of the assistants to actually approach him about it, though, was unexpected. Perhaps he’d underestimated how upset they would be. “Tim, that’s a very serious accusation to levy against someone, you know.”

“i said he was following me. has been for god knows how long. following me home. and i have proof.” he unlocks his phone, slides it across the desk to show a photo taken surreptitiously from just outside tim’s door. over his shoulder, jon can be seen just barely ducking out of view. tim plants his hands on elias desk and leans forward, clearly agitated. “you see how this is unacceptable, right? there’s something majorly wrong with him.”

he snorts, stares at elias with a carefully blank expression. “it is not sentimentality. i simply like the world the way it is. i do not understand you who are so focused on creating rituals and drawing powers through to this world. and i do not think it will end well for anyone who actually manages it.”

aaron shoves his hands deep in his pockets and looks somewhere over elias’ shoulder. “you can view it as such, if that makes it easier for you. though sentimentality for what is up for discussion. i do not want to stop you, not really, but i have a feeling you will destroy yourself as much as you do the world.” perhaps that is sentimental. but then, he has been accused of that before. (a pair of mismatched eyes not unlike his own, a mischief filled grin.) and he has always had a soft spot for elias. one that seems to cause him nothing but anguish and he cannot shake.

it laughs, surprised by the movement but not by jonah’s presence. both arms go around his neck and it clings, not afraid of being dropped but just wanting to be close to it’s Watcher. a purr rumbles through it, a little rusty after so long. finally fully manifesting after so many years suppressed, used for its powers but never allowed to come through fully. static sparks from it for no other reason than to just feel.

“hi,” it says when jonah finally stops spinning (doesn’t set it down, of course, just cradles it close). “i missed you.”

jon folds his hands on the little table in front of him. elias is within arms reach. he could end all of this now, if not for the watching eyes of the guard tucked in a corner. his fingers tighten where they’re laced together. his jaw clenches. part of him wants to argue, to insist they would stick by him. but he remembers the way they attacked him when he came back, the coldness in their eyes. they already view him with suspicion, seem to be working with him grudgingly.

deep down he knows they would turn on him. he’s a monster. he knows that. he probably deserves their derision.

“you made me this,” he rasps. he thinks he should sound angrier but instead he just sounds desperate. what is he doing here? why did he seek elias out like this? there is nothing to gain from this visit. but something tugs him closer. maybe it’s the way elias doesn’t sound cruel when he tells him this. just sure and maybe even a touch gentle. elias would Know, wouldn’t he? he put them all in these positions Knowing how everyone would react. elias has done nothing but manipulate from the start.

jon takes a breath. “this is your fault.” once again, it doesn’t come out as harsh as he wants. it sounds pleading but jon can’t even begin to parse what he wants. elias to fix him? to tell him what to do next? he closes his eyes. his exhale shakes. “what is your game, elias?”
