“That is why they call it an unsolicited criticism. My apologies,” Loki didn’t sound apologetic at all, “you sounded angry, I simply assumed that it was directed towards myself.”

A single brow rose  with the other man’s statement, and without realizing it, Steve was already making his way towards him. The dim lighting made it hard to distinguish the exact expression on the man’s face, but Steve could make out his bright smile. And in some inconceivable way, the blond thought that it was a refreshing sight.

Once he had reached the man, Steve pulled another chair out and set his beer to the side. His interest had piqued to the point that he didn’t dare hide it, and as soon as he had sat down, he leaned his chin against his hand. “I’d love to hear this solution of yours.” He said, far too casual to be considered natural. “If you actually have one, that is.”

Loki watched Steve (Captain Steve Rogers. Of course Loki knew who he was, the man was a legend on Midgard) approach through hooded eyes, almost anticipatory. Long, pale fingers picked and tore at the label of his now empty beer bottle.

“Do I strike you as the lying type?“ He asked, lips adopting an ironic twist, as soon as Steve was within easy earshot. "Of course I can help. That is, assuming your metabolic rate is the issue…?” Loki trailed off, letting the sentence hang. If it was something tricky like an incompatibility with alcohol–something that a high proof wouldn’t fix, well, then they would have to get creative.

7 Minutes: {Loki & Emma}

Emma tilted her head a little assumed as he looked at the contents of her closet. Corsets and garters, skirts and shirts. She might not be willingly reading his head, but Emma could feel an uncertainty, “See something of interest?” She smiled hoping to bring his attention back to her.

“Just a notion?” Emma voice mimicked his tone flawlessly, “No, we don’t allow them anything. Just happens.” She let her gaze rest on his features, a gentle slope of her smile curving flirtatiously, “Don’t tell me you didn’t do anything because you were told not too?” Her voice had dropped a little lower, a little more huskier because she knew full well Loki was probably the type to break the rules just out of spite.

“I do now,” Loki shot back without missing a beat, turning to face her once again. The flirtation was thoughtless, reflexive, though Loki would be lying if he claimed himself unaffected by Emma’s tone.

“Me? Never,” he pressed his hand over his heart, trying for scandalized. “I am a god–that’s nearly a saint.” Slowly Loki’s eyes slid across the contents of Emma’s closet (lingering on several articles of particularly fine taste) before settling on her. She had that look again, that dangerous perceptiveness coupled with a wicked intellect. Loki took a step forward, forcing them closer together in an already tight space. “I can find a certain thrill in doing as I’m told.” His tone made it clear (because it wasn’t quite a lie) that this statement was only true in a particular context.

Steve’s gaze followed the man’s line of sight, and he let himself laugh when the man directed his attention to the bottle of beer in his hand. The drink felt cold, and Steve was tempted to take a sip of it. But would there be any point?  “Nah.” He drawled out. “Alcohol doesn’t have much effect on me either. It does nothing to my system. It just leaves me a little bitter, if anything. That’s it.”

“And so your maligned spirit lingers in this tavern, haunting its patrons with sobriety,” Loki chuckled, his smile bright in the dim lighting. “How perfectly devious.” Despite not being drunk in the least, Loki’s head felt fuzzy, content. It was enough to make him wonder if the Jotnar weren’t part reptilian, the way the warmth of the bar made him pliant. “Assuming you don’t enjoy your role as enforcer, I may have a solution.” A bottle of Vanir red, squirrelled away in his dorm room, more specifically.

“Hardly,” She answered on a smile, “But who said it has to end at seven? we can simply continue” She gave a slight bow of her head and made her way into closet. “No offense intended, darling.” She wasn’t sure she’d call her attitude giddy, but interested well beyond belief yes. Because what sort of information could she discern from his head in those 7 minutes.

She watched the door close and gave the god a wicked smirk, “I’m sure this little game is rather childish too you.” She stated letting her eyes adjust. “Should I ask if you know  how to play?”

The moment the closet door shut, cutting the light, Loki’s eyes were accustomed to the new dark. Low-light vision: another boon granted by his unique heritage. Loki turned away, ostensibly to examine some of the contents of Emma’s closet (but really because, uncharacteristically, he wasn’t quite sure what his face was broadcasting in that moment).

“I have a notion.” His voice was a salacious purr. “And you allow your children to play this game?”

Loki resurfaced from another long-winded explanation (liberally peppered with lies; ‘of course dragons exist, only they’re no larger than an inch, and about as dangerous as a nectarine’ and ‘did you know that the Aesir have three recognized sexes? Male, female, and big blond louts with more bicep than brain’), to find that James’ attention had wandered. It would have been insulting if they hadn’t just spent the last hour playing out a distinctly one-sided Q&A. As it was, Loki thought it might be a good thing that the little mortal’s surprisingly intense focus had been redirected–he did have to be able to fit his head back inside his room at the end of the day, after all.

“What is this?” he asked, craning his head around at the assembled crowd. “A public flogging?” Dark eyebrows drew together as Loki struggled through (learning an entirely new language, even for one so intelligent as he, was going to take more than a couple months) one of the signs an angry mortal held aloft. ‘Die mutant scum’? It held no meaning to him.

Staring at the signs, Bucky groaned. “Worse. Protesters. Think mutants are assholes who should die because they’re mutants. Judgin’ people that are otherwise just like them for no reason. Like it was something they could control. It’d be pathetic if it weren’t so disgusting.”

Bucky shook his head. Eighty fucking years and they’d swapped Jews for mutants. Otherwise, it was the same. Watching those almost-riots made an uneasy feeling set in his stomach, of how familiar this was, and what it could lead to.

No, scratch that. Watching them made him feel like tearing every single one of them limb from limb until there was nothing left. And he’d be able to do it without dissociating an inch.

“If we don’t leave right now, I might do somethin’ I regret. Like shoot somebody”, Bucky warned.

Ah, mutants. All at once the word clicked, images of super strength, telepathy and pseudo-magic flashed across his mind. It was no wonder the assembled humans were angry (scared, more like). They were a dying breed, staring into the eyes of the future with extinction nipping at their heels. How this irate procession was supposed to remedy that, Loki could hardly fathom. One could not boycott evolution.

“And why might that be regrettable?” Loki asked tonelessly, partially because he really, truly had few qualms about the ending of human life, and partially because he anticipated an entertaining response. Mortals could get so twitchy where their morals were concerned. "Would you not simply be expediting a natural process? They've practically lined themselves up for you--I thought Midgardians were keen on efficiency." Loki's smile was goading. There was something dark in James' eyes, and the trickster felt compelled to attempt to tease it out.

Slipping further into the proceedings (he didn't check to see if James was following, but trusted that he would), Loki watched with curiosity as a small clearing was made in the crowd, several video cameras set up along its perimeter. It appeared that they were setting up for a broadcast of some sort.

Bucky had always been a Catholic. Until, of course, he’d gone to war. He’d stopped believing in good altogether, then, and his faith had gone down the drain.

Still, he was more than a little shocked when he caught himself chatting with a fucking Norse God. Given everything that had happened in the past, he got over it easily. The guy was a little arrogant, but he was interesting, and Bucky was a geek. His questions kept on coming, which probably inflated Loki’s ego a little bit, but that was okay.

When he realised it, they’d been walking outside of the university for almost one hour, only to run straight into an anti-mutant manifestation.

Sigyn knew where he’d be at that point in time, she had a knack for finding him when she needed to. So as she approached him from behind she was happy to find him sitting exactly where she’d assumed him to be. Light on her feet she gracefully moved towards him, a panther honing in on her prey. “Hello dearest Loki.” She hummed, her hands resting on the armrests beside him. She lent in slowly, connecting her lips to his in a soft kiss, her ebony hair falling like a veil around them.

She was smiling, perhaps a bit too noticeably. Her hands rested still on the arms of the chair, holding her at a comfortable height to indulge in the exchange they were now having. Sigyn was never used to being at eyes height with the God, and found this moment to be quite extraordinary.

Her hair was brushed away, and a slight shine was brought to her eyes. Sharing a kiss with Loki was something she hadn’t expected to be doing on this day, but to say she didn’t enjoy it would be a lie. Not that she would ever tell that to him, or anyone else for that matter. A pale hand rose to his cheek, thin fingers caressing as she shifted her weight to her other arm, keeping herself steady.

With a soft him she responded; “You may thank the one who shalt not be named. Though I suppose you could also thank me.”

Loki’s eyebrows jumped as he huffed out a quiet laugh. Sigyn’s fingers were pleasantly warm against the cool contours of his face, and Loki had half a mind to hold them there. The other half, however, had another idea. She wanted to play? Very well then, they would play.

“Thank you, then,” Loki purred, the corner of his lip twisted up into a knife-slash smirk. A long fingered hand wrapped itself around Sigyn’s elbow and tugged gently, just enough to set her off balance, allowing for Loki to use his other hand to guide their lips together once more.

It could have been worse. Could have been a lot worse, she decided. It could have been some she wasn’t so similar too, hell she even admired his way of thing. So all in all, Emma didn’t regret it. She gave the man a grin over her shoulder and beckoned him with her finger as she made her way to the closet. At least she knew she’d have fun one shape or another

“Shall we, darling?” She gave him a wicked grin one she’d seen him use a few time. “I need to satisfy my curiosity” she whispered lowly but not without subtext.

Midgardians had such strange pastimes, Loki mused, a single dark eyebrow arched as his name was called in conjunction with Emma’s. The match-up didn’t please him, it didn’t make him feel much of anything--seven minutes was hardly even a heartbeat for one so old as he. Still, he would hardly back down from a challenge, and so he allowed Emma to lead him toward her closet.

“And you believe seven minutes shall be sufficient?” he asked, smile crooked. “You do me offence, my lady.” With one hand Loki pulled open the closet door, the other raised before him as he sketched out a quick little bow. After you, the gesture seemed to say.

“You have clearly never paid visit to the realm eternal,” Loki’s tone suggested that this was not necessarily a bad thing. “There is no greater group of starch-shirt, stick-in-the-muds than the Aesir. Why, a pretty little trick like this might well have earned me a night in the stocks.” It was impossible to tell whether Loki spoke in jest (he did, mostly, due to his high standing all but the most severe of his stunts tended to be met with degrees of leniency), his tone and body language giving little away other than a calculated casualness.

“There is no need to apologize,” Loki waved a dismissive hand. “Drifting thoughts are indicative of an active mind, and that is rare enough on this realm.” He placed his book aside, the present conversation promising to be much more engaging. “But if you still feel that a wrong has been done, I do have an idea as to how that might be amended.”

Emma nodded slowly not out of understanding because she honestly knew little to nothing about any other realm. But she now had a little project on the side. She was about to become a very busy woman in the coming weeks. She couldn’t hide the smirk that pulled her lips up at the idea. She had much to learn.

She gave a gracious tilt of her head in acknowledgment, “Sadly, not all the drifting thoughts were mine.” her statement came out a bit annoyed at the fact.  How the students believed her gift to be working and how loudly the thought obviously didn’t connect. To his next works she gave a soft laugh, “And what pray tell is that?” A glimmer of mischief and challenge glinted in her eyes as she  questioned the god.

The expression on Emma’s face was familiar, one that Loki recognized from his own visual lexicon: it was ambition, it was an expression of curiosity that demanded to be satisfied. That such a feeling was turned upon himself was somewhat flattering. Loki wondered which Midgardian folktales Emma would stumble across in her searches (and more importantly, which she would take as fact). 

“Sit. Speak with me. The hour is late, and it has been far too long since I’ve been graced with intelligent conversation,” Loki replied simply. Likely Emma had been expecting a slightly more degenerate response (and by looking at her, quite frankly, Loki was tempted to give it. Certainly Midgardians were not built this well the last time he’d paid the realm visit), but there was little Loki loathed more than living up to expectation.

“No?” he asked, lips tightening minutely. There was an unpleasant thought. Loki wondered if any of the stray thoughts were his own; he wondered just how gifted Emma was. If he would even notice should she begin to wade through the tangled mess of threads that composed his mind. Crossing his legs, Loki leaned further into his seat in a deliberate display of nonchalance designed to mask discomfort. “And there are no methods of circumvention you might take? It seems a mighty vulnerability, having one’s mind so open to suggestion.”
