The lonely chimney, Mile End, London

This chimney alongside the Regents Canal looks like it was part of some former industrial works. In fact it is an old sewer vent. I assume it's for an old as opposed to a current sewer because I've never smelt anything particularly obnoxious in its general vicinity.

German Memorial in Tannenberg, modern-day Olsztynek, Poland

I find this postcard a little ominous and also a bit puzzling. "Do not forget the German East" is one translation, and the idea of "Drang nach Osten" is not totally dead. Tannenberg in Saxony, however, remains a part of Germany. Olsztynek in north central Poland was once part of Prussia with the name Hohenstein in Ostpreußen. Tannenberg in Ostpreußen, is now the Polish city of Stębark.

Near Tannenberg in Ostpreußen - Stębark was the site of a famous battle in 1410, a decisive defeat of the Teutonic Order. In 1914 during World War I Russian and German troops collided nearby. It was a great German victory, a total defeat of the Russians, with the famed Paul von Hindenburg as the German commander and Eric Luddendorf his adjutant. Both became notorious in the Nazi era.
