With a few hours left to go in My First Game Jam, I’ve finished Ephem! It’s all uploaded and ready to go.

Whew! We did it in 2 weeks! I learned a lot and it was a great experience that was lots of fun. I discovered new things about RPGMaker and practiced keeping things small and efficient so I could work quickly within the time-limit.

One more day to go and I’m wrapping things up. This is just a preview of what I’ve worked on today.

I’ve finished pretty much everything. I’m just going back through and testing things, polishing stuff up a bit. It’s a relief to finally be at this stage. 21 hours left in the jam, and I should probably get some sleep.

I never really explained what Ephem was.

Ephem is a short turn-based RPG about a criminal thrown into the depths of a cursed dungeon. He tries to fight his way out, but he can’t do it alone.

He’ll need to employ the help of a stranger who he meets deep underground.

But not every area is accessible to both characters, so the player will have to switch between playing both to continue through the dungeon.

And with the horrifying monsters lurking about, it isn’t safe to go alone!

I finished the final character’s portraits needed for the game, along with a handful of different expressions! Here’s also a little preview of his pixel sprite and some more tiles, too.

Although it’s just a rough estimation, I want to say I’m on track to finish the game on time so far. I even gave myself a day of cushion time just in case!

I put together how the menu and messages look, and played around with lighting a little for some parts of the game. I recently finished the player sprites as well. @pyromantic-arts made the beautiful tileset!

I don’t want to spoil it, but I put together a pretty cool intro scene today too.

I finished another character’s portrait for my game, her name is November and she’s quite angelic in nature.

My First Game Jam has just begun, and I’m making good progress so far! This is the main character’s portrait. He could use a bath.

@lonestargame and @pyromantic-arts are joining to help me with art assets as well!

My First Game Jam

This will be a blog for a game I’m calling ‘Ephem’, to be worked on during “My First Game Jam”.

I’d like to make a complete game, even if it’s very short. Up until the day the jam begins, I’ll be doing some planning. Stuff like outlining the plot, sketching out character designs, and day-dreaming about various features.

It’ll be made in RPGMaker MV and will use the turn-based battle system. While I’ve used RPGMaker MV for a bit, I haven’t actually used its battle system yet. So it’ll be a new experience for me.

When the event begins July 8th (I believe?) I’ll try to post here daily with updates to keep me on track.

While all the art assets will be custom, I’ll be using some music from http://www.hmix.net/ It’s a pretty cool place, so check it out if you want some music for a non-commercial game. (Though I believe you can use the songs for commercial with a fee.) Even if you don’t read Japanese, you should be able to right click and translate the page. (I know you can translate like that on Google Chrome, but it may be different for other browsers.)

I’ll be taking a break from my main project to work on this quick 2 week jam. It should be a fun learning experience, so I’m excited to take part. I’d like to follow other blogs working on this jam, too! This is a side-blog, so I’d be following under my main blog’s name.
