Happy Valentines! I’m late as always, ‘cause I was on soooo many dates because all Summer Smith fans have at least three girlfriends.
…anyways.
Summer has had a few partners, and more than anything, I want to analyze her taste and overall love life. We're excluding any headcanonned ships, implied relationships, her fake husband shown in The Fear Hole, and anyone shown in The Old Man and The Seat.
In the pilot, Summer has a crush on Frank Palicky. When she walks past him, she thinks to herself that “this is the story we'll be telling our children”, so she’s obsessed with him. She doesn’t even notice that he’s obviously frozen, which shows you how into him she is. Or you know, was. She later makes a shrine for him and mourns his death with other students.
Frank threatened Morty at knife-point, with his last words being that his family is rich. So Summer was probably into him for looks, the fact he’s rich, and maybe for the fact that he’s a “bad boy” (not knowing that he was close to killing her brother due to this)
Since Summer is at her most basic here, this is her most basic taste: Rich guys who could walk all over her and she wouldn’t care.
Ethan’s weird to me. The first time he’s shown, he argues with Summer pretty fast about how she was “ignoring his texts” and he wants all her attention. Summer also wasn’t the one who calmed him down, it was Jacob. It really feels like this relationship was never meant to be, even though it’s the one that lasts the longest. Ethan is incredibly clingy, hyper-defensive (citing his molestation at a young age), and makes out with Summer in front of her parents. I don’t really know what Summer saw in Ethan other than maybe liking the attention she’d get from him.
Ethan also gets Summer into Headism and completely transforms her, and it IS an excuse to make them closer.
Something REALLY weird is the fact that in Big Trouble in Little Sanchez, Summer has a crush on Toby Matthews (since he’s popular, so that’s probably Summer’s type now), so Ethan is surely out of the picture. But we see that Ethan dumped Summer for Tricia Lange in season 3’s The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy. This isn’t a simple continuity error where the episodes were produced at the same time or the time gap is small, so I guess the writers just forgot? Unless the implication is that Summer had a crush on Ethan yet is mad that Ethan has a crush on Tricia.
Back to The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy. Summer was furious and accused Ethan of dumping her for Tricia simply because she had a bigger chest. This is probably true, but I think the other reason is that Tricia is richer and would give him more attention. So again, I think the only reason Ethan and Summer liked each other is they had the same type, but they weren’t that type of person. This marks the end of their relationship, as Summer becomes a skinned giant and tries to kill Tricia and Ethan. She befriended Tricia afterwards, so she never held a grudge with her, just one against Ethan. I think that says enough about this relationship that was really never going anywhere.
Hemorrhage is interesting. Summer isn’t head-over-heels and is a bit more gruff towards him. She’s also the one that gets him to take his helmet off, kisses him to shut him up, tells him they should pee on a billboard together, and she clearly matches his street-smarts. Since this is season 3, we’re getting an edgier Summer that can stand up for herself, so I love how this relationship is built on Summer making the moves outside of just gushing. I still think she’s into “popular” and “bad” boys because Hemorrhage was basically the leader of the wastelands. Summer is serious about this relationship and marries him. But three weeks in, they become an angry couple. I still like that Summer is the breadwinner, realizing why her mother divorced her father in the process.
One last random thing: Hemorrhage’s lexicon is limited, leading to him using terms like “the before-fore” and “Boom Boom”. It does remind me of some of Summer’s fuck-up phrases like “carping them diems”, and she really isn’t the best at articulating herself either way.
Overall, Summer’s type evolved, but seemed rooted in popular guys that had some kind of edge to them. She does love attention, after all. With Hemorrhage, she asserted herself as an individual more. I would argue that she did the same with Ethan, just not as serious. I guess it makes sense that she wants to surround herself with popular people. She is friends with Tricia, wanted to be friends with Bruce Chutback, Nancy was seen as a party girl by Squanchy and Rick, and constantly takes any chance to be a leader.
Maybe season 9 will continue this pattern or break it… by also having her END UP WITH A GIRL!!!!!!!!
