I have wanted to do something Undertale themed ever since @therealjacksepticeye did his lets play on youtube. If you haven’t got the chance to play Undertale yourself, I highly recommend Jacksepticeye’s lets play. Thanks Bro, this one is because of you (also I’m writing this with his accent in my head. It’s awesome.)
First was to print out a stack of lined paper. I still wanted it undertale themed so I made up the royal emblem in photoshop and added it to the top left.
For the end pages I wanted the character naming screen and the “the end” page. If you didn’t know, the game is white on a black background and I couldn’t easily invert colours and scale up and still have it look good. So I had to download the undertale fonts and make them from scratch.
After sewing up the text block I lined it with mull and padded up the lower areas of the spine with some thick indian cotton.
Since the colours of the game are essentially black and red, it was a pretty obvious choice that the headbands should be this colour too.
Then it was onto the cover design. I re-created the shield that goes around the emblem and added some diagonal lines around it to give the whole thing some depth. It was then ported to the Cricut and cut out.
I used the off-cut of the inside of the shield as a template so I knew where to glue on the cutouts.
Yes I made 2 books but only one has made it to completion. I’d bevelled the outside edges and around the narrower parts of the interior design so the leather would form around the pattern easier.
Then it was time for some ribbon bookmarks. I couldn’t decide between black and red, so I just chose both.

The setup for gluing. We got a roller, a plate (covering in plastic wrap) with glue on it, a bowl with a damp cloth, white leather, the book, and a paintbrush. There should also be a little brass tool that I use to define the edges and lines somewhere but it’s not in the photo.
I wanted to have a lavendar background so I purchased some alcohol ink. I tried it out on one of the books and… the result didn’t go as planned. So I went over it with several coats of purple acrylic paint. I had a small issue with keeping perfectly within the recesses. It is still waiting to be fixed.
Also this is what happens if you forget to put your newly glued up book in the press for a few days. Whups.
After the corners were turned in it was time to paste down the end pages and leave it in the press for several days.
Knowing that this book would finally make it to tumblr filled me with determination.
