It has been a year since our zine's charity fundraiser event. This year we'd like to release the zine for free so the hard work put in to this project can live on forever.
This release is in loving memory of a contributor that passed late 2025, we hope to honor their memory. Thank you.

i wanted to experiment with leaving sketch lines in my paintings. i’ve seen this happen in a few of the artworks i’ve studied in art history and took inspiration from there. i paired it with the narrative in the painting about the identity that was “painted” over sunday during penacony and yet the underlying self, the sketch, still seeps through.
i’m yet to finish the new quest as of writing this. i’ve started it and i’ve seen the sections with rerir’s backstory, and i just finished the section with nefer’s backstory. i just haven’t had time to fully finish the quest. but i think rerir is such a beautifully written character and masterfully highlights the ideas of accountability and love. i won’t write spoilers here, but i truly love how his character was written.
he’s such a complex character with such an abundance of aggressive, intense energy. he’s someone who is so violent and brutally angry, and so i thought to picture him in a piece that’s very silent and still. there is so much to say about this character so with this piece i tried to say nothing at all. i wanted this piece to be one you can just sit with and process the ideas you have about this character without offering any input of my own. the piece is silent so the viewer can mourn or feel angry, or whatever emotion they harbour towards this character at their behest.
the discussion gets a little personal at this point. if you’d like to skip it, you can scroll down until you see “other notes”
i’m often told that my art has a lot of emotion, which, i never really understood, and i still don’t. i guess it’s because i never really create with emotion in mind, which is likely because of my own personal struggles with experiencing emotion. i have difficulties in identifying when i experience emotion, and so i can’t exactly channel it purposefully within my art. emotion has always been a byproduct in my works rather than the purpose. i’ve been speaking to my therapist about this lately, and this is the first thing i’ve drawn since beginning to work on my struggles. i wanted to be purposeful with how i handled emotion in this artwork and hopefully evoke the feelings i wanted to.
other notes:
this work is inspired by the sculptures by haejin lee:
i think this concept is very fitting for rerir, especially the depiction i wanted for this work. its elegant but shows chaos beneath the layers.
that is all for this discussion, thank you if you’ve read this far :)
happy flins day and happy halloween!!! i decided to draw him as a hunter from bloodborne :3 less bloody version (cause i really like how i rendered the blade…) plus the working stages & short process discussion <3
i really wanted to take my time with this one because i've been unhappy with my paintings recently. i feel like they've been so flat and that i haven't been considering forms when i render, so that was the focus for this piece. i wanted the hair to actually interact with the planes it rested upon and i wanted the bangs to be 3 dimensional since i felt that was often a shortcoming in my works.
the original concept involved pieces of the abyssal hands rerir summons but i decided to leave them out for the sake of simplicity. i felt the piece was getting too busy already and i didn't want to cover up any more of the rendering i did on the saw cleaver </3
i'd like to do more art for this au once i've finished bloodborne though. i’m currently fighting one of the final bosses 😬
i adore the aesthetics in bloodborne and i think i could make a semi reasonable au with the nod krai characters 🤔 hunter flins is already one of my favourite concepts though, definitely intend to draw him more if i haven't already
🌹 Our donation has been made and we are overjoyed to announce a total of 927.51 USD was donated to Take Back The Night!!
We would like to thank everyone who helped make this project such a wonderful success so we could raise such a amazing amount for charity!!
🌹 Everyone should feel so proud of their involvement, big and small.
the full cover i did for @shingujizine !!! i definitely didn’t forget i can post my piece 🧍♂️
so glad i got the chance to work on this zine, thank you to everyone involved in the production and creation of this zine!!! go check out all the awesome artists and writers who worked on it as well!
stylistically i wanted the cover to have the feel of traditional japanese art, i had a lot of fun doing the linework since that’s not something i usually do in my art. the book pages are taken from “ella minnow pea,” one of my favourite books that is written in the style of letters between townspeople as their alphabet gets taken away. highly recommend!
so how many people are also coming back to genshin cause of him 🙋
both versions are available on my inprnt!! there’s a summer sale going on for the entire site right now :]
i had a process discussion written for this but tumblr deleted it and i don’t have the energy to rewrite it 😞 but here are the stages of this artwork if you’re interested
i’ll be putting up a speedpaint on my instagram epiicaricacy__ in a bit, just super sleepy rn 😪 anyways i love my emo wife i hope he has 17 mental illnesses and ghosts inside of him ❤️
i have also created a playlist for this AU on youtube!!
this project has gone through a lot, to say the least. i have nearly abandoned it multiple times over the years. it was originally a comic that had been restarted so many times with so many styles that i could never get it just right. but i am forever grateful to my friends who encouraged me to pick it back up again and to make this story a reality. i have made a lot of progress on this project in 2025 and i’m very excited to see where it goes from here :)
a mixed general discussion and process discussion under the cut which will probably end up being a bit long 😬
oh man where do i even begin in talking about this project. the whole concept came about solely because of my love for kazuscara and hearing the song “arcade” by duncan laurence (which, is a song i don’t even really like haha?? it’s not bad it’s just not my type of music, but i think it’s interesting it inspired me so much anyways). i thought it would be a cool story: kazuha falling in love with a character inside of an arcade game. and then it just continued to expand beyond that into the version of the story i have now. the current version has nothing to do with arcades or games, but a majority of the story has stayed the same to this day, and that fact excites me. i have a problem when it comes to projects and art where i can get bored of a concept so quickly — i’ll excitedly sketch out an idea, and then the second it’s on my canvas, i get bored of it. the same goes with a lot of the fics ive tried to write throughout my years of doing so. i used to write on wattpad, writing single paragraph-long chapters once i got home from school and then abruptly ending the story once i got bored of it. but not once have i been bored of this story. in fact, reading the scripts ive written over the years or looking at the concept art just gets me more excited to bring this story to life. even if only 2 people ever end up playing the visual novel, knowing that i made this story a reality will be enough for me. and i’m excited about that.
when i was younger, i thought making a comic would be THE end goal for me as an artist. i thought that would be when i “knew” i’d have reached a high point. i’ve tried several times throughout my art journey to make a comic. in early middle school i tried making standalone undertale comedy comics on the undertale amino. in late middle school i had an AU of a danganronpa ship (it was kaede and izuru) being prison cell mates who tried to escape prison. i had a lot written out for it as well as some designs, but i remember hitting a roadblock in the writing and i never picked it up again. i still have the notes and files in my private discord server for that au. the arcade au/the arcade compilation of oddities was my last attempt at making a comic before realizing this wasn’t going to be something i could do. i was just not capable of that kind of work, and that’s fine. so at that point i thought i would either have to make the AU work as a fic or just drop it entirely. i tried to translate it into a fic, but too much of the storytelling was visual and wouldn’t have as much of an impact if just described to the reader. so for a good while i dropped the project, just letting it collect dust in my computer files and dreaming of the day i would be able to make it a reality.
then i quite literally woke up one day and realized i could make a visual novel. i have a minor history of doing sprite work, ranging from danganronpa sprite edits to an attempt at a visual novel between my middle school online friend group and making fake sprites for SIG game AU’s. i enjoy doing sprite work! visual novels are my favourite type of game, so ive been exposed to plenty over the years. it was then that i decided i’d download renpy, look up some tutorials and figure out how to make this game. this was sometime earlier this year, and ever since then i’ve been singlehandedly creating this visual novel. honestly, i would love to make some original visual novels after i finish this one. it lets me combine my art and writing and learn how to code as well. i’ve been having fun learning renpy and i can spend a morning just writing out the lines of dialogue while watching something else. i’m hoping that by the end of the year i’ll be on track to getting chapter 1 finished as a demo :)
i also have a blog dedicated to updates for this VN @kzsc-vn but it’s on hiatus right now as i’m on a trip! progress updates will pick back up when i get home later this month.
speaking of progress, this is the first year i’ve been able to make something for the anniversary. the previous years i’d just feel guilty about making AU art that wasn’t the actual AU itself and i never got anything done regardless. this year ive been letting go of that guilt and letting myself make the art i want to make. i got this one out pretty quickly, actually. i sketched it while waiting for a flight and outlined it while waiting for take off. i’ve been having more fun with this project than ive ever been able to before, and even if only my friends ever play it, the fact that id have made it would be satisfactory for me.
moving on to the artwork itself, i once again had the aforementioned issue of getting bored of the ideas i had. there were other elements i wanted to include in this, but i figured it would be better to save them for a separate artwork than to cram it in here. i also just didn’t have time for anything more elaborate, which is why all my latest works have been portraits 😭
a key idea in the AU is fate and how the various characters struggle with the idea of destiny/having a legacy. each character in the AU is allegedly a reincarnation of someone from inazuma’s past/genshin’s canon (i say allegedly because of how numerous characters take issue with the whole reincarnation idea. kazuha particularly adamantly refuses to identify himself as a reincarnation, wanting nothing more to be free despite that desire only tying him down further). i wanted to play with the idea of the red string of fate, which is something kazuha references in the VN. he has a line where he says that his desire for freedom only entangles him further with canon kazuha in “the same colour of string.”
the line “I AM NOT MY FATE” actually has some funny origins. while that is an idea i wish to convey towards the end of kazuha’s journey, the wording itself comes from an old episode of game changer, “as a cucumber.” there’s a section in which sam guides the players through a fake meditation sequence, with each statement beginning with “i am not” and following with something to separate yourself from (i.e, embarrassing moments from your past, insecurities). i believe this sequence gets more eerie as it progresses with the statements getting stranger and possibly existential if my memory serves me correctly?
a frequent search phrase i look up is “string photography.” honestly just looking up any place/object followed by “photography/portrait” finds me a bunch of cool references. i’ve seen various photos of people tied together at the eye level with string, or a person trying to tear string off their face. i also took some general inspiration from this tatsuya artwork by gnawe where the lines and colours are layered atop each other in different directions. i wanted to do something similar, and i ended up with au kazuha starting to try and pry himself out of the outline that canon kazuha has made around him (trying to not live in his shadow and all that). this idea also took inspiration from “i was never a normal boy” by nightmare of you (which is on the youtube playlist i linked above!) theres a part that goes:
i don’t go out unless its demanded of me
i already know what is outside
but what i don’t know is what’s inside of me
i think this song really fits my au characterization of kazuha very well. he doesn’t leave the house unless necessary because he knows there are people who will try and tell him who to be and force him into the silhouette of canon kazuha. and he faces a lot of internal struggle because he wants to believe he is his own person yet everything he does in pursuit of that only ties him further to the idea he’s just a reincarnation.
i wanted the two versions of kazuha to contrast each other pretty strongly. the canon version is idealized in the world of the VN. he’s drawn and rendered nearly symmetrically to perpetuate the idea that the canon versions were “perfect” and what should be strived towards. he’s treated as a legend that contributed a lot to inazuma’s eventual “prosperity.” he’s painted in normal colours and he’s smiling. the au version is in complete darkness and only painted in greens. his rendering is messier and not symmetrical — a lot of his face is even cut off, hiding specifically the part where his red streak would be. his eyes are open, anxiously looking at the strings where he’s pulled them, and he has no mouth. he is constantly silenced in regards of his identity and is always pushed towards an idea he wants to run from.
the original sketch didn’t have canon kazuha’s facial features drawn over, it was just plain so you could fully see au kazuha. but i thought it’d make it a bit more eerie and that it added another layer that is trying to cover up au kazuha. i also found that the lines i usually draw on nodes lined up with au kazuha’s eye, so i turned them into red tears. the lines to show the tip of the nose and the nostrils also have a double meaning but that’s an end of story spoiler :]
that’s all for this long discussion. if you’ve gotten this far, thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to read about my process and my general feelings about the project so far. i’m always so delighted when people comment on what i’ve said here which is why i keep writing these!
it was an honour to be able to be the cover artist for this zine! preorders are open until august 31st and profits are going towards take back the night! go support the wonderful contributors who participated in this zine :)
no process discussion for this one just yet, but below is just some general commentary.
korekiyo is the one character that’s truly stuck with me for a majority of my life and who continues to influence me to this day. he has left such a significant impact on me and helped me discover who i would eventually become, and brought me a lot of comfort during a turbulent period of my life. i am able to celebrate entering my second year of university as an anthropology major thanks to him.
i couldn’t have been more flattered when i was offered the cover artist role for this zine. i have not done much zine work in the past, mainly because the work i do tends to fall outside of the requirements for most zines and thus i am unable to meet the application guidelines. i am immensely grateful to the team who put together this zine and offered me this role. i honestly have been waiting for a korekiyo zine for ages, so just being accepted really made my day.
and to my fellow contributors who have found this post and read this far, hello :) congratulations to all of us who gave something to this wonderful project!! i wish i had the time during production to chat with more of you, but it was lovely meeting everyone i did at the time :]
finally, whether it’s just by sharing the post or preordering the zine itself, thank you to everyone who is able to support the zine!! that is all for this discussion, i’ll write about the process once we’re able to post our pieces!!
