Bedtime buzz #3
A little different tonight, but let’s watch a bedtime video! What do you think? Vast 466-mile-long canyon discovered under Greenland ice sheet.
Radiation levels 18 times higher than previously reported have been found near a water storage tank at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant
“1800 millisieverts an hour is high enough to kill an exposed person in four hours. Tepco said it had yet to discover the cause of the radiation spike. Tepco admitted recently that only two workers had initially been assigned to check more than 1,000 storage tanks on the site. Neither of the workers carried dosimeters to measure their exposure to radiation, and some inspections had not been properly recorded. Decommissioning the plant is expected to cost tens of billions of dollars and last around 40 years.” Comment on this post and others you love. Finally, comments on Tumblr posts! Learn how. Has anyone here made the steps to go off-grid? Is anyone completely off-grid?
I want to go off-grid but the costs are insane, plus installing solar panels seems so complicated. I'm looking to build a vardo and become completely off grid, hopefully by next year, but am looking for some discussion about the steps that some others took to go off-grid, the benefits and negatives of going off-grid and things to think about when planning to go off-grid. When I talk about going off-grid I am referring to using a sustainable electric source as well as water harvesting, growing ones own food, foraging, natural medicines and anything else that removes one from being dependent upon the system. MICATS Legal Support
State Implementation Plans of EPA regulations continue to give way to corporate agenda. How does Enbridge qualify as a PUBLIC UTILITY requesting easements - they are a PRIVATE INTEREST. People are losing their homes, their health, their crops/woodlands, and the state will be dying. The dark black blood of oil will be everywhere - pipelines, frackwells, and more. MICATS (Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands) members are facing felony charges for blocking Enbridge pipeline Line 6B construction on July 22. Sentencing is looking like 2 years in prison for 3 of four at Stockbridge. 3 years for one of them. 2 years for Chris in Battle Creek. It’s a start
Encouraging, but Chinese coal-fired power plants are still a big problem - “In a statement, China’s cabinet, the State Council, said that under the new plan the environmental protection sector will grow by 15% on average annually, reaching an output of 4.5 trillion yuan (£474 billion).” Comment on this post and others you love. By Daniel Stuckey If you’re new to New York City, simply visiting for vacation, or, if you’re a born-and-raised New Yorker that still can’t point out any other states on a blank map besides Florida and Jersey, then you might also mistakenly believe what the MTA subway map tells you about the city—that it lacks any realistic level of fidelity and Manhattan is the blown-up silhouette of a Motorala RAZR: The U.K.’s Max Roberts, a mapmaker and critic, has created a map that sees its simplifying problem and then solves it by taking a similar approach, but to a much greater degree. The map heads in the direction of a diagram and away from a map trying to represent geographic features. It may be the most lucid reinterpretation of the New York City subway map I’ve seen yet: "A map that pretends to be geographical but isn’t quite correct is potentially misleading, implying to people greater distances than exist in reality,” Roberts told FastCoExist. It could actually be a success if the MTA were ever to a adopt design such as Roberts, but I think it’s rather unlikely. The amount of money it takes to print out a map update when it needs to is enough for the authority to avoid risks with such a concept. Shark Survival
People who say that sharks should be killed, are wrong. Not only are they critical for maintaining the ecosystem in the ocean but those who are attacked by sharks, know the risk they are taking when they enter the water, it’s their habitat, they were there first. Plus more people are hurt by toilets than sharks and you are more likely to be killed by the flu than by a shark, just saying. They should teach children in schools- mainly places like Australia, about what are known as “red flags" and shark’s behaviour. At least then they would know what to do if they came into contact with a shark Plus they are beautiful creatures and should be protected anyway. 3,000 + turbines just north of Palm Springs, CA, in the Banning Pass. Geothermal energy plants have been built in the Salton Sea basin, near Palm Springs. Solar energy plants are being constructed to the east of the Coachella Valley. Good place to study the effects of the development of alternative energy facilities on the local environment (including wildlife and botany), political considerations (USA federal, state and local) on development and maintenance, and other issues (distribution of power generated, use of water in water-challenged areas, etc.) See more sustainability and climate change posts you’ll love.
