It didn’t feel like they were playing house until they brought the cameras in. Or rather, it didn’t feel like they were playing house until the cameras left, when Mark and Ann stood with Oscar and waved them off from the doorway only for Ann to bring an end to the whole ordeal with an airy sigh and a, “Well, time to see after dinner. Oscar, are you staying again?” Oscar’s gaze flickered between her and Mark for a beat too long. “Yeah,” he said at last. “Yeah, that sounds alright.” They’d said it about a dozen times, just like that—Ann leaning in the doorway of Mark’s office while he and Oscar were immersed in some work talk, or peering into the sitting room while the two of them were sprawled on the sofa with the dogs laid out between them, in the midst of picking apart some classic race. Mark couldn’t have said why he never noticed before that it felt like they were reciting lines that they’d learned to perfection.
