It's time to flush your stereotypes down the drain.
“Congratulations, gamer girls—you’re officially at the top of the food chain when it comes to games. A new study released by the Entertainment Software Association has revealed that adult women now occupy the largest demographic in the gaming industry. Women over 18 made up a whopping 36 percent of the gaming population, followed by adult men at 35 percent.
Teenage boys, who are often stereotyped as the biggest gamers, now lag far behind their older female counterparts, making up just 17 percent of the gaming demographic.
The picture that emerges from the study is one of expansion across the board. More people are playing more games of various genres across more platforms, with social games on mobile and casual games on PCs emerging as huge leaders.
All of that means that stereotypes are breaking fast in the gaming industry, particularly the longheld stereotype of the adult woman as an outlier who sticks to mobile games and “social” games on Facebook while the more hardcore gamer, the “serious” (male) gamer, goes for console games.
Though this stereotype has long persisted, and even been used as a hiring tactic, the new data suggests there’s little if any truth to it—especially not when you consider that the average adult woman has been gaming for 13 years.
And while the total audience for mobile social games is now bigger than ever, the audience for computer and video games is now an even 50-50 split between male and female genders.”

Oh man, I peeked through the comments on this post and, as expected, there are a lot of complaints about the validity of the survey. Things like, “the chart says women are less than HALF“ and “but they counted casual gaming AS GAMING“ etc. I think you guys are 100% missing the point :v
So the point is to lie and be dishonest? :^)
Oh, you! I was hoping I didn’t have to spell it out, but okay!! It is a bad business decision to alienate half of your customer base, wouldn’t you agree? (Anybody who’s arguing over that 4% difference is being pedantic, btw. It’s very effectively half.)
Also, saying that certain genres of video game don’t count as video games makes no sense whatsoever. I’ve heard it with all sorts of games considered “casual” as well, there seems to be no agreed definition for what that’s supposed to mean or why it even matters - my mom plays Candy Crush on Facebook basically every waking moment, that sounds pretty fucking hardcore to me. And hey, she also likes Super Mario World!
Anyway, if you want to play the same things over and over again that’s fine and there’s no shortage of games whose aim is catering to Straight Guys, nor are they going to stop being made. Arguing that those are the only games that should be made makes no goddamn sense, though.
I’m a 29 year old woman. I grew up with an Atari 2600 and a garbage bag full of carts for it, all the MS-DOS shareware games I could buy (which was a ton because they were like $1 each at Computer City), an NES, an SNES, Game Boy Color, several N64s, Dreamcast, PSX, Game Boy Advance SP, Gamecube, DS Lite, 3DS XL - I could go on but maybe you get the idea - and according to the charts up there I am not an outlier. So who is being dishonest, now?
You don’t have to validate your credentials, they actually just make you look even sillier in the face of how little you know about how the gaming markets (and I do mean plural) operate. I’m going to have to get something out of the way very early for you so you understand because you’re making a very simple, fundamental mistake by using the word ‘gaming’ or ‘games industry’ so broadly.
When you say ‘gaming’ or ‘games industry’ you are implied to mean the larger AAA market, big companies like EA, Konami, Namco, Nintendo, etc. which is the same error that the article makes actually (and quite ironically.) These are not the same thing as gaming as a whole because gaming means, well, any interactive medium. So you’re conflating several very distinct markets together as one whole which will give you incorrect information at best and misleading, destructive, useless information more likely.
To be brief the ‘gaming’ that is being mentioned in the article and the ‘gaming’ that does most of the production is the very same market that is NOT dominated by women and women don’t account for half of that market. Right off the bat your first point is incorrect in assuming women make up half of the gaming market that is being spoken about.
You even go on to imply this distinction is meaningless and try to make the point irrelevant which is just classic and hilarious. Oh yes, let me make broad sweeping declarations about a certain market that is actually several large submarkets and then justify decisions based on that while pretending this is both valid and sensible. You should go into stocks, I’m sure you’d do absolutely FANTASTIC in such a market. Making fun of you aside…
Nobody said casuals games, you said it.
Telling isn’t it? You’ve got your rhetoric all lined up but it just aint catching. Or are you going to pretend that the AAA market should make decisions based on whose buying mobile games or one of the SEVERAL gaming markets that are ACTUALLY DOMINATED BY WOMEN. Whats that? Markets dominated by women that I’ve never heard about because I’m an uneducated twat trying to talk up her gamer cred despite being about as aware as a toddler with an Xbox controller in its mouth? Why I’m so glad you asked.
Puzzle gaming is dominated by women. Adventure gaming is dominated by women. Rhythm and dance gaming is dominated by women. Funny how those distinctions aren’t important to you when determining what a market place should and shouldn’t do, is it perhaps because you’re reciting a talking point and have your ‘female gamer’ identity wrapped up in something being true when it isn’t? Seems that way.
See there is absolutely no reason for, say, Treyarch to make their games more ladybit inclusive when women aren’t the ones buying their games. To do so based on OTHER MARKET’S FEMALE DOMINATION WOULD BE COMPLETELY FUCKING RETARDED. Are women’s clothing lines going to start marketing towards men because men buy, in aggregate, 50% of the clothes on the planet or would the fact that there are various submarkets matter to you then when it makes you look silly? Oh who I am kidding - you already look silly.
Would you like to strawman argument for me? Oh you did. Thanks love, what I want in games is definitely for them to cater to my straight male demographic and I definitely don’t hold the opinion of not giving a shit and just being very annoyed by harpies demanding things changes based on FACTS THAT AREN’T FUCKING TRUE.
So you said why should we alienate half the market? Better question - why shouldn’t we cater towards the people who are BUYING the GAME you are PRODUCING? Wouldn’t that make sense? So shouldn’t Gears of War, a series that is aimed at men and bought mostly by men and played almost exclusively by men continue to aim towards the people buying it or does this whole ‘include your audience!’ shtick only apply when women are involved? If women are the people almost exclusively buying the game then guess who it caters towards - women.
Would you like to have some hamfisted car races in your barbie game or would you like to let the game developers who know what they’re doing do their fucking job without your irrelevant opinion?
In short - women are not buying Call of Duty, they’re buying Monkey Island and Eye Spy Mystery Mansion 5 off the Walmart shelves. It has NOTHING to do with ‘casual’ games and everything to do with the fact that games which do not feature heavy combat and roleplaying elements are not part of what we traditionally call ‘gaming’. So sad but so true.
So now that we’re all shored up on how this study is misleading, useless, and you have somehow negative idea what the fuck you are talking about because you spent your formative years playing Super Mario instead of learning how to read the abstract of a study is there ANYTHING I can do to make sure you fully understand and I don’t have to repeat myself?
If not, go back to some place where people give a shit that you’re a gamer with tits and I’ll be here where the number of tits you have doesn’t matter and, if it does matter, we use ACTUAL FACTS to decide how they should matter instead of misinterpretations based on overly broad market reviews that do not apply to this particular submarket. Buh-bye now.
Holy shit, dogg! You wrote 927 words about how angry it makes you that people with tiddy spend the same leisure money as you!! You should have thrown a couple more gross generalizations in there, gone for the 1k. I am honestly touched you decided to start on NaNoWriMo early just for me, though.
Anyway I’ll try to address some of this in order, but it’s fucking long so pardon me if I skip on responding to any particularly vital insults. I threw on a shortlist of my ~gaming credentials~ as an afterthought, so people know a little better where I’m coming from as one of the actual demographic subjects (lady that pres butan). I wasn’t gonna write out a list of every video I ever gamed, because A.) that’s dumb and there’s too many, and B.) I know that you don’t actually care that I’ve played E.T. or Adventure or Commander Keen or Xargon or the Hugo trilogy or Duke Nukem 1 or Animal Quest or PF.Magic’s Petz or Prince of Persia or NARC or Snake Rattle N Roll or every Mega Man or Kirby’s Adventure or Toejam & Earl or Ecco 2 or Donkey Kong Country or Star Fox 64 or Mystical Ninja or Conker’s Bad Fur Day or every Pokémon from Blue to Y or Keitai Denjuu Telefang or Network Adventure Bugsite or GachaSta! Dino Device or Marvel vs Capcom 2 or Sonic Adventure or Ecco: Defender of the Future or Lumines or Spore or Terraria or Team Fortress 2 or Zookeeper Battle - I know you don’t care, so I’ll keep that list short, okay? I’m sure all the sorts of games I’ve played and loved my entire life are garbage tier shit dumpster games, because I am one of the cursed Gɪʀʟ Gᴀᴍᴇʀs.
You said a few paragraphs about markets here and my eyes rolled back into my head because I don’t give a fuck, women play all that different shit. All of it. If we didn’t then this wouldn’t even be a thing, because we wouldn’t be going “hey I play Game and it’d be cool if the next one had more of Thing. I just want to know that my woman money I got at my adult job spends the same as 12-yo codblops allowance, you know? There sure is MORE OF IT here in my lady satchel.” Lordy b’gordy.
“Nobody said casual games“, except for the other comments I was direct addressing such as “Oh god they counted fucking mobile gaming“ and “This study counted people who played candy crush casually as “gamers.”“ PROTIP: if you play video games you’re a gamer. They’re toys, stop being an elitist fuck about people’s entertainment options.
a toddler can’t fit an Xbox controller in its mouth what the fuck is wrong with you
Also I’m not sure what you’re suggesting in your women-dominated-genres list there, are we supposed to be corralled into those subtypes because our tits just keep knocking the controllers away from every normal console? Or is it just that you’re shitty at puzzles and hate adventures (who doesn’t like adventures what the fuck is wrong with you no wonder you sound so miserable about other people’s fun) and wait I’m pretty sure a shitload of dudes play DDR??
I’m so sorry you limit your definition of “game“ to Shoot Mans and codblops, I had no idea the point of Pong was to kill the enemy guys in a War. Pac Man should be retconned to beige, with gun. Pac Man you are NOT A FUCKING VIDEO GAME ANYMORE until you FIRST PERSON SHOOT wario SQUARE IN THE HEAD
wait did you spend your formative years learning to read studies instead of actually playing and enjoying video games? holy shit. HOLY SHIT. that would explain things. no wonder you hate adventures and love linearity
bye, I’m gonna play zookeeper battle with one tit and keitai denjuu telefang power limited edition with my other tit
This rebuttal is a thing of goddamn beauty. p.s. dear gamers(TM), cut this ‘you’re not a real gamer’ shit out, forever and ever, amen

Hi! I love you rats! So cute! I just got two boys and I love them to death. One of them,Dean, he's really comfortable with me. But my other rat ,Sam, he gets very nervous and poops a lot when he gets nervous. Is there anything I could do to get him to be more comfortable?
Ratniss was like that. She’s become a lot less shy now, needed a much gentler approach to handling than her cagemates. I try not to ever corner or trap her and let her come to me when she’s in a sociable mood. Treats and a soft, calming voice seemed to reassure her a lot. A thing that is cute as all hell: pretty much anytime I make eye contact with her, her ears perk up and she starts bruxing.

This is Ostrich the rooster. He used to be the shyest one, he was terrified of people and would go into a total panic if anyone got near him. After months of working on socializing him, he's now a total snugglebird. If I'm not paying enough attention to him, he'll get impatient and start vocally complaining while pulling at my pant leg until I pick him up. He and his brother Emu are inseparable and will bring treats and bugs to each other to share. He's an excellent li'l dinosaur. Also kind of a sneakthief and troublemaker.
