the touch of his hand as he grips onto her arm to stop her leaving, stills her. this is not a situation she had ever thought to be in. when she had come to join the varden, pretending as she was that she was no one of importance, she had told herself she would only look upon eragon from afar. never would she speak to the boy, not unless his life was on the line.
but here she was, stood before her youngest born. he was born out of love - real love - and hope for a better tomorrow. but he was also born in all the fear she could ever have. fear of morzan and the choices she had made that had brought her to where she was then.
oh how her heart wants to break at the very sight of him! grown and strong and all the things a mother can only hope her children are blessed with. and yet also upon his shoulders is so much responsibility in a war she never wished upon him.
the look in her eyes softens - it is a mother’s look, as she finally meets his eyes. she will not admit to who she is, this is not a right she has anymore. she can be no more than the handmaiden she has claimed to be. but she has resolved to speak, to answer the best she can the questions he seems to have.
gently she moves to take his hand off of her arm and in doing so, she answers him. “what is it you wish to know?”
If this were his mother, he did not care for how she lived her past. If this were her mother, he was glad Brom killed Morzan for not even his brother deserved a father such as him ! Rather. . .the secret was out. Murtagh wasn’t the ONLY son of Morzan, but Eragon as well. The battle of the Burning Plains where the two boys had clashed. . .it had left a hole in Eragon’s heart. Murtagh had said it in the Ancient Language and everyone knew that one could NOT lie in the ancient language.
Brown eyes darted back to his grip on her arm and hastily let go. He would not become what everyone thought he was. The son of Morzan. Never would he show an act of impulsive, ruthless violence towards another --- after looking upon what happened with Murtagh it had turned Eragon’s face paler than bone. The look in his eyes changed to one of grief. He knew his question but how was she to know ?!
❛ -My apologies. I did not mean to startle you in such an unkindly manner. Never you mind about the question. . . ❜ he had been impulsive --- not thinking before he acted out. It had always been a habit of his he’d gotten scorned for from Brom and Saphira. The dragon rider turned his back to her, hands clasped behind his back as he tried holding an air of dignity all the while dying from the inside. ❝ You may be on your way. . . ❞
