Hacks, Kidnapping and Rescue
Leon gave the witch a look of amused disbelief and scoffed. “I’m sorry, you were hoping to catch up? Are we ol’ friends from back in the day and I forgot? Well, where are my manners then, Mr. Remington?” His voice was mocking as he spoke, waving down a nearby human and insisting they get the witch a drink as well. He turned then with a smile back to Elijah, smirking as he asked, “Elijah Remington, why in the seven hells do you of all people care what I’ve been up to? Is your life finally not an utter mess and you’re trying to find a way to fuck it up again?”
"Oh no, an old friend would be worried about your health and well being. I just want to find out what sort of trouble you're bringing back with you." Elijah returned Leon's smile, refusing to let anything the vampire said get to him. Besides, if he responded to every quip about his family he'd never have any peace. "Exactly, so maybe I'd rather hear about all of your utter messes for once. To take my mind off my own problems and enjoy the festivities."
“I could, but typically it’s held together by threat of a horrible war if the alliances are completely broken. Would that happen here? Would you all go to war?” The idea did frighten him for he knew the casualties on the human side would also be great and yet so many would be unaware. That was his biggest problem and the main reason he put some of his lot with the Artemis crew. Secrecy changed lives, harmed lives. He was afraid with getting a more intimate eye into the supernaturals lives he’d gain more empathy for their need for secrecy. Especially if as many were as charming as Mr. Remington. “And I appreciate that.” He dipped his glass in acknowledgment of the opportunity he was being given. He knew not everyone was going to trust him, and they shouldn’t. Trust was always to be earned not granted just because it suits the whims of others. “Oh only the fourth? How generous of you to give them three strikes.” Howell swallowed down a chuckle with half the liquid in his glass. He’s forgotten some of them were practically gods.
Elijah took a deep breath, glancing out the window as he considered his answer. Would the supernaturals start a war? Even with the issues between vampires and wolves and the killings they'd never gotten to the point of all out fighting. "I don't believe so. One of the main purposes of the council is to deal with issues between supernaturals to avoid open conflict. So far we've been able to avoid war between us. With artemis however, there have been some individuals who have taken it into their own hands, but most people want a peaceful resolution."
He returned Howell's gesture with his own glass and finally took a sip of his own. "Oh let's not get into the strike system. Multiple council members are getting close to the triple digits on strikes and I will neither confirm nor deny if I'm one of them." It would be interesting to see how everyone reacted to a human representative on the council, though after this first impression Elijah was planning to play the good cop.
Miral watched as the man talked of visiting the gallery where he worked. He nodded enthusiastically. "Please do. I put those displays together myself. I'd like to know what you think of them." Mira stood up at the same time as Elijah and held his hand out to gently shake the other's. "It was lovely to meet you. Until next time." He watched until the other was out of sight and then bounced off to his house to shower off the sand and salt and get ready for his day.
Sipho nodded his head in agreement, his lips curving into a tight smile. He had his reasons for being... less than friendly towards vampires in the past, but he could admit that there were a few that had earned his trust. "Yes well, I've had my reasons, but the evening hasn't been terrible" he conceded. "I've struck up a few good conversations with some new faces and the wine is excellent."
"Indeed. It's been very well put together, I'll admit. I took a turn on the ferris wheel earlier. It was unexpected." Sipho didn't frequent the club so he didn't know whether it was a new addition for the festival, or something that could be found regularly. He chuckled, "you likely have. I'm glad she's enjoying herself. She has been working hard lately" he smiled, like the proud older brother that he is. He glanced at his watch. "Two hours and 46 minutes..."
"It looks impressive, but I wasn't too interested in it." He'd seen the line for the ferris wheel, but Sipho's description of it as 'unexpected' wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement. "I could always teleport you home. People wouldn't technically see you leaving the event." He raised an eyebrow, happy to let the conversation drift away to something other than the party. Coven business never got old. "What have the two of you been working on, if I can be nosy?"
Eiji nodded, twiddling his spoon around in the mug of black coffee in front of him. “I’ll be fine. It’s not the first time something like this has happened.” Albeit he didn’t go around giving himself concussion every weekend, but Eiji wasn’t exactly known for taking care of himself either.
He sat quietly, unsure of what to say or how to act after the previous nights confessions. He waited, not wanting to be the one always starting the conversation and yet hating the quiet at the same time.
Elijah winced, remembering the multiple times before that he'd seen Eiji come staggering back home or the aftermath. There were also some times when he'd heard about it from someone else and had tried to just brush the rumors aside, though with his promise to Eiji he would try to quash them in the future. "Go easy on yourself, please. If-"
He was interrupted by a loud chime from his laptop and glanced over before looking closer with a quiet curse. As he opened the message another one came in on his phone. "Sorry, I..." He read the message and sighed before looking up at Eiji. "I have to deal with this. I will be- try to be back in fifteen minutes." He stood up and took a step back from the table, mouthing another apology over the sound of another notification before teleporting away.
Mira wondered how happy the elves there would actually be if they knew what he'd done in the past. That he'd stolen a literal fortune from the elders who'd raised him. They'd fed him, put a roof over his head, and made sure he was well read, yet he repaid them by slowly pilfering away anything of value they had and planning his eventual escape. Yes, they had slaughtered his mother and father, but they'd justified it somehow with their strict rules. Mira still didn't feel as if what he did was right, in a moral sense, but he knew it was the only way he would survive. It was the only way he would know a real life with relationships and a family some day. "I will have to meet them. When I'm properly settled in of course."
The blond elf shuffled around in his spot on the beach and tucked a stray curl behind his ear as the wind tousled his tresses. "You don't get to go often? You really should. The art exhibits are changing all the time. Of course, we do have our permanent exhibits, but it's all very beautiful. Emotional. I adore it all myself." He smiled up at the other man.
Mira was obviously thinking about something when Elijah mentioned the elves, but it wasn't his place to pry. "You make a very convincing case. I'll try to make more of an effort to get to the gallery." It was probably an empty promise, but at this point he'd made so many of those this one was at least mostly harmless. He meant to smile back at Mira but was interrupted by a yawn and turned away to cover it. "Sorry. I think I need to head back to the museum and home before I end up falling asleep here." He started to get up, brushing sand from his clothes and stretching a bit. "I'll see you around?"
Elijah's responses continued to baffle her. Jo wasn't sure who he thought he was talking to or what kind of conversation he assumed they were having. She had come to him with a simple, straight-forward request and yet he kept acting like they were engaged in some type of chess match, sidestepping her at every turn. If attending his classes was anything like this, she pitied the students who took them. How a man with such obvious contempt for humans had ended up teaching at VU was anyone's guess. Then again, he did seem to enjoy hearing himself talk.
"Right," she replied in the same measured tone despite his apparent animosity, deciding not to pursue the topic any further. She had said her piece, had done what they had sent her to do. So far all he had done was implicate his son and prove himself to be a liar—only one of which would make it into her report. Whether he chose to pass the police's message along mattered little to her as a person.
The question she was about to ask him was one Jo knew he was likely to take as a slight against him—and perhaps, on some level, it was—but her interest was a much more personal one. "Do you love your son?"
Elijah let the polite, solicitous smile fall off his face, for the first time giving Jo a genuine expression. It seemed like a ridiculous question, but if Jo knew more than she was letting on then it did become somewhat warranted. "Yes I do. Very much. And you're welcome to put that on the record." Even after the negotiations with artemis, Elijah had made no secret of how much he cared for Eiji still and didn't plan to deny it. He had a feeling everyone who knew him realized it on at least some level. "He's my son. There are times when we've gotten along well and times when he infuriates me, but at the end of the day he's still my child. I'll always love him and I'll always try to keep him safe." Even if that meant safely in a jail cell as painful as that had been to watch.
“What are you hoping to use it for?” Eiji asked curiously. It felt a little pathetic that he had to ask his father a question regarding his work in order to break the silence between them, and that he had to be the one to initiate it. Eiji shrugged, “Not a lot. Work tomorrow.” He responded. He didn’t want to actually say the words ‘sleep off the hangover’ even though it was blatantly obvious that was what he ended up doing most weekends. Eiji paused for a second, distracting himself with a bite of toast before asking, “How come?”
"I don't really know yet. It'll depend on what sort of spells from it actually work, but it looked like something with illusion magic." He admitted with a self deprecating shrug. He considered offering to ask if Eiji could have a sick day off from norex, but was afraid he would think that was patronizing or Elijah giving him special treatment. Better to wait and find out how he was feeling tomorrow and go from there, maybe find some excuse to keep him at the tower. "I just want to make sure you'll be alright. I've gotten concussions before, so I know what the recovery feels like."
“Oh.” Carmen replied, unable to hide the slight disappointment in her voice that it wasn’t something more exciting, but now she thought about it, it did seem obvious that they as vampires wouldn’t need it for anything. “That’s very helpful.” She was quick to add.
Carmen was certain her parents didn’t want her talking to any vampires. Though she’d always wondered why they hadn’t appealed to one of the vampire clans to take her off their hands. Maybe they couldn’t trust them to take their reputation seriously enough to keep her in line.
Either way, Carmen wanted to meet them. “You would do that for me? That would be great. Maybe here would be better… I’m here every Tuesday.” When I’m allowed out.
"Absolutely." He gave Carmen a reassuring smile. This next bit was more delicate. "I don't mean this to offend or worry you, but vampires can be dangerous if they don't know how to control their abilities. It's best for you and for all of us if you know other vampires who you can rely on and who can teach you." He had a feeling it might be her parents who were trying to keep her isolated, but no matter how much they knew about the supernatural as humans, it obviously wasn't enough. "I'll let Isabelle know to come on tuesday."
"Elijah." Sipho took a sip of his wine, savouring the sweetness of this particular vintage before placing his glass down in front of him and shifting in his seat so that he could give more of his attention to Elijah than the dance floor. "You look beat. Having a good night?" he asked, lips twitching in a way that suggested Sipho already knew the answer, even if he maybe didn't.
"Uneventful, thankfully. I wasn't sure what to expect from this crowd" he admitted, crossing one leg over his knee, his ankle jumping slightly. He chuckled at the offer. "I'm alright for the moment. I'm sure the persistent thumping behind my eyes will dissipate with a good night's sleep," he smiled ruefully. "How long have you been here?"
"I'm ready to sit for a while, but it's been a good enough night. Then again I think I always did like vampires more that you do." He tipped his glass of orange juice toward Sipho in a mock salute before taking a sip. He'd also had more affinity for vampires than his mother had, which ended up being a point of contention between them when he was younger. "They've done a good job as far as I've seen of keeping things under control tonight, which I hope is a good sign for the future." He grimaced sympathetically at Sipho's description , knowing the feeling well enough. "I've been here a few hours, some watching, some participating. I think I saw Sizani a few times dancing. You?"
"Elijah Remington, whatever stopped you from taking it off then and pocketing it before you stepped into my private abode, if you weren't looking to offer?" He smirked, glancing between the witch's gaze and the collar. "The real question to me is what you're hoping to gain having a little chat between the two of us. Questioning your own morals perhaps? Or perhaps is this regarding your kin I saw out among the crowds earlier tonight?"
"I can't want to say hello to another elder? Ask where he's been for the past months?" He answered with a small quirk of his lips, but still he used magic to feel out the shape of the clasp on the collar in a habit he'd developed. Mostly he was trying to figure out what angle Leon was taking now that he was back in the city. "I spotted Rei a few times as well. He's old enough and can take care of himself, so I'm happy to see him at supernatural events."
location: booths around the dancefloor somewhere for: open
The Rubicund was not a place he frequented often. Even at his age he could only recall entering the club a handful of times before. He had almost lost his bearings twice coming back from the bar with half a glass filled with some Italian vintage wine, that he was sure he could not pronounce without butchering it entirely, in his hand. Once he had found an unoccupied booth a little ways from the dancefloor, he parked himself there and sipped slowly so as not to have to move again any time soon, and watched as the dancers enjoyed their evening of revelry.
He supposed he should make more of an effort to mingle, but he mused that the night was still young and whilst he enjoyed socialising in general, he found it a little grating attempting to hold a conversation by shouting into another's ear. At least from where he sat he was far enough away from the speakers to hear his own thoughts clearly, and relax into the festivities surrounding him.
When he felt a presence slide into the booth with him, his lips twitched upwards at the corners behind his wine glass. "Were you seeking my company, or a moment to rest your feet?"
He'd been walking along the various booths looking for one that was either empty or had people he knew in it when he'd spotted Sipho. "It's good to see you, Sipho." He settled into the seat beside Sipho with a small sigh. Elijah had ditched the 'bite me' collar about halfway though the party and was drinking juice now to get his blood volume back.
"How's your evening been so far?" Even though his days of partying and being a degenerate flirt were long in the past, from the way Sipho was almost hiding in the booth away from everything, Elijah could guess that he was still more comfortable in this sort of place than the other coven leader. He hadn't seen Sizani yet, but presumably she was around somewhere. "I also have some aspirin if you need."
“Talk? And here I thought that collar around your neck was offering me something more worthwhile. It’s been quite some time since I’ve had the honor of a willing coven leader.” Leon reached out and gave the spot beside him on the couch a gentle pat. He gave a playfully disappointed sigh as he added, “I suppose I could settle for picking the brain of a Remington though. Come. Join me.”
He took the invitation and sat beside Leon. Elijah only trusted Leon as far as he could throw him, but with his powers that was actually quite far, so he decided to take the risk. "I suppose you'll just have to see how well the conversation goes and find out whether I keep the collar on or not." Though there was something appealing about the idea. "Welcome back from your adventures out of town."
Leon glanced up from where he sat in the private room, several other vampires and a few familiars relaxing and minding their own business as the syndicate head noticed a new presence join them.
“Ah,” he greeted with a devilish grin, making eye contact with the individual. “And to what do I owe this pleasure? Surely you’re not intruding just to say hello.”
"Of course not." Elijah took a seat close to Leon, leaning back with a smile. "I'd never say hello, I'm just here to intrude." He shrugged to adjust the ridiculous led collar he was wearing, having loosened it so it wouldn't feel like it was always resting on his windpipe. Out of obligation he glanced around at the humans in the room to make sure they were alright before focusing back on Leon. "It's been a long time since we last talked."
Elijah's Winefest 2026 outfit
Jo's brow furrowed faintly. "Father's intuition?" she repeated. The phrase lingered for a moment before she tilted her head slightly. "Your father's intuition told you to tell a police officer with absolute certainty that your son is involved with a major criminal organization without any actual proof?" She didn't press the point further. If Elijah wanted to walk back the statement, he could. If he wanted to continue pretending that certainty and intuition were interchangeable concepts, that was his prerogative. Jo had already learned what she needed to from the answer.
"That is simply not how these things work." The suggestion of bulletin boards and public posts was so spectacularly counterproductive that for a second she wasn't entirely sure whether he understood what she was offering or whether he was deliberately pretending not to. "I'm not asking you to publicly advocate on behalf of the police. I'm asking you to discreetly pass along a message." Her expression remained neutral. "The department is willing to talk. That's it. If Eiji wants nothing to do with us, then he can ignore it. If he wants to hear what we have to say, then he can make that decision himself. Either way, broadcasting it to the whole city completely defeats the purpose. The second that offer becomes public, it's worthless. Best case scenario, Artemis decides he's become a liability. Worst case..." She paused. "It gets him killed."
Her gaze lingered on Elijah a moment longer. Long enough to wonder whether he actually believed any of the things he was saying or whether this entire conversation was simply another exercise in seeing how many ways he could avoid helping while still claiming cooperation. She had arrived willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. That reservoir was draining rapidly. "Can I ask you a personal question, Professor?" She said at last. "Off the record."
"You're welcome to prove me wrong, but I know it won't repair our relationship so I haven't been holding out hope." Nothing Jo or anyone else found would contradict him but that was a secret for now. Still, Elijah felt his time was better spent planning how to get Eiji out of the way when everything with artemis came crashing down than trying to convince anyone that he was innocent. "I'll consider it, but if talking with you all could really be so dangerous for him, the actual best case for his safety might be for me to not convey the offer. But, I will try to find a way to discretely pass your message on." He wouldn't because it was pointless, but telling Jo that would just cause more problems.
He stayed still for her examination but raised an eyebrow at her 'off the record' request. It would have been better to ask that question before the conversation had become so catty, but Elijah was equally responsible for that. In the future he needed to work on keeping his own emotions and annoyance in check when it came to his family. Still, he spread his hands and sat back in his chair. "You're welcome to ask anything you'd like." Personal questions tended to have a chance that he would answer honestly if it wouldn't reveal any secrets.
