Waiting
This is a Sylus x Eren (OC) one-shot....
Eren allows her feet to drag her wherever it leads her to. Its has been days since she has decided to take her most deserved vacation leave — mostly because Kairose won’t stop bugging her to rest as well as Captain Jenna won’t stop reminding her to take her vacation leaves, saying that it’s not good for a hunter to not give her body some time to relax.
She came to a stop as she found herself standing in the middle of a field of Datura flowers. No locals would go anywhere near this place. The flowers are poisonous after all but to a fiend, this field is a sanctuary.
Her and her beloved’s sanctuary.
It has been a very long time since then.
She misses him. She was ecstatic when she found a recorded audio containing his voice. She wasn’t sure if it really was him at first so she listened to it a few times more, then she really is certain it is him. But when she saw which file it was in, she knew she had to see him, and so she went into the N109 Zone. Though it hurt her that she had to pretend that she doesn’t remember him.
Eren closes her eyes, smells the air and feels the breeze. Oh, how much she wants to just spread her wings and fly right now.
Then, a twig snapped.
Breaking her tranquility, eyes open and alert as she spun around and Claymore materialized on her hand, pointed at the unwelcome guest. How dare they disturb her peace?
She gasps when she sees who it is, dropping her Claymore as he chuckles.
“Is that how you greet me now, raising your weapon at me? I thought we’re already past that phase, sweetie.”
“Sylus? What are you doing here?”
“Your little mermaid-loving friend was so easy to…. What’s the word? Hmm, ‘persuade’, is the term I believe to describe her.”
“So she keeps on pestering me into taking a well relaxed vacation only for her to blabber out where I am?”
“Well,” Sylus walks towards Eren with his hands in his pockets. “I wouldn’t have to go through all the trouble of getting her to talk if only the person I’m looking at gave me the heads up that she wouldn’t be around for the next few days and will be travelling to Europe to visit a valley where a dragon fiend was slain while protecting his beloved, where Tarus City once was.”
He came all the way here cause she wouldn’t be in Linkon City in the next few days? Eren felt her stomach knot as her cheeks heat up in red and her heart quicken it’s pace just as Sylus stops in front of her. How did he even know about that myth? Sylus doesn’t seem to be someone who would be interested in knowing the myth of other places. How did he even know to find her here?
A strong wind gracefully blew as flower petals flew everywhere. That’s when she noticed.
“Sylus, you need to get away from here. The flowers here are poisonous.” Eren grabs his hand to pull him away from the place but Sylus refuses to move an inch. “What are you doing?”
“You say they’re poisonous yet you’re standing in the middle of its field.” Sylus bent down and picked a Datura flower and tucked it behind Eren’s ear. “Though, why should we leave? We’re finally back together here in our sanctuary.”
“What?” Eren couldn’t believe what she’s hearing. “What are you talking about?”
Sylus lowers his face, their noses nearly touching. He cups her cheeks with his hands. “Only you and this flower can touch me here, I told you that before.” His eyes glowed in red as dragon wings emerged from his back and horns grew on his head. “But I am quite hurt, kitten. You dare to pretend that you don’t remember me after you made me feel things I never could have imagined and moved me with your human love.”
Eren could feel her eyes watering, a tear rolling down her cheek. “I never thought that I would see you again, that I would forever be alone.”
Sylus wipes away her tears. “Sweetie, I’ve mentioned this before: once we hold hands now, our lives are bound, along with our deaths. You must have really hated me so that you have cursed my soul to never perish.”
“That’s right, I hate you so much. You said that we would be together yet you’re the one who left me all alone and against the world. I cursed your soul so I could see my dragon again.” Eren could feel something wrap around her leg. How she misses the feeling of his tail around her. “I’ve been waiting. And yet, you treated me poorly when we met again.”
Sylus chuckled lowly. “Is that any different from when we first met, kitten?”
“I guess not.” Eren pouted as Sylus pinches her cheeks. She engulfed him into a tight hug. She never got to do this when they met again back in the N109 Zone, but here, she can. “I missed you, you stupid dragon.” Her eyes slowly glowed red as her wings spread. “I’ve been waiting for you.” She rested her chin on his chest, looking up at him.
“Let’s go for a flight, my beloved.”
The Statue’s Artist
Chapter 1: Gift
“Surprise!”
Liza burst the door open with a few bags on hand, frightening the concentrating Eric who was doing a painting.
“What the hell is wrong with you?! Couldn’t you knock like a normal person?! You almost made me ruin a piece here!” Eric threw the paintbrush he was using at Liza who merely dodges.
“Because,” She started, placing the gifts on the floor and walking up to Eric, “if I remember correctly, you said that you wouldn’t be taking any painting commission or any art related as you will be on hiatus from your work and will take a well-deserved rest. What happened to that idea, hmm?”
Eric sighs, completely forgetting that he really should be resting. “But I am resting. This painting is for me; I had a dream last night and I couldn’t get this image out of my head so I thought I should put it on canvas.” He beckons Liza to stand beside him and see the painting.
When Liza took a look at the painting, her jaw dropped in awe. A painting of a man kissing a woman surrounded by the darkness. “This gives me a Greek mythology vibe.” She commented. “But why are they surrounded in darkness though?”
“Well, in my dream, they were some sort of deities of the Underworld. And they were lovers.”
“That kinda sounds like Hades and Persephone.”
“It kinda is, isn’t it? I need to lay off the books. Those dark romances are starting to get into my dreams.”
“You think?” Liza shot him a look. “I told you, you need to get out of the house every once in a while and socialize, not just stick your nose into a book all the time! You are resting but you can’t just stay cooped up here with just your books and artworks and anime! How are you supposed to give me a godchild if you won’t leave your cave to meet people!”
“Hey! First of all, I do socialize!” Eric tried to defend himself, “just not so often. Second of all, I do meet and hang out with other friends —”
“Yeah, and after that, you need to recharge yourself so you lock yourself after you’re done socializing for the day. I figured as much, which is why this is my birthday present for you.” Liza places a small envelope on Eric’s lap. “Happy Birthday, my sweet BFF!”
“I have totally forgotten my birthday is today. Thanks for the reminder.” Eric opens the envelope and pulls out a VIP plane ticket. “Sis, what is this?”
“A plane ticket.”
“I can see that. But why are you giving me a plane ticket to Greece?” Eric eyed Liza. She has been his best friend since high school so she should know that he very much prefers books and anime and food over anything expensive that doesn’t even interest him. A thought occurred to him. “If I remember correctly, didn’t you and John planned to have a vacation in Greece? This is supposed to be your ticket, isn’t it?”
Liza sighs, she should have known her best friend would notice. She knew she should have given Eric books first before the ticket so his mind would be occupied and he wouldn’t have to question her and would have agreed to come with her to Greece right away. She wanted to whack herself for not thinking of that first. “That’s supposed to be John’s ticket for the trip, yes. But he couldn’t come.” She admitted.
“And why is that?” Eric pressed on. He would rather not be the third wheel if ever John has decided to catch up with them later.
“He received an email; there was an emergency at the company and he is urgently needed. I don’t want the tickets to go to waste so why not give it to you as a present. I know your fascination with Greek mythology so I thought this would be a good gift.” Liza grabbed onto his forearm, tugging him. “I beg of you, bestie, come with me on this trip!”
Eric looks at the ticket, debating whether to go or not. While, yes, he was intrigued by the legends of the Greeks — especially, the romance between Hades and Persephone as well as Eros and Psyche — he wasn’t really that interested in visiting the place.
“Please, Eric!” Liza pleaded, giving him the sparkling eyes.
Eric looks away, scrunching his face. No! Her doing those beautiful eyes should not work on him. He couldn’t go, he still has a lot of books that he still haven’t read yet, and a novel that he needs to update. Eric pry an eye open to see if his best friend is still doing her pleading look, and it was a big mistake. He sighs. “If I went on this trip with you, would you be with me the entire time?” Eric finally gave in.
“I would, I would!” Liza’s immediate reply, “I know you have a bit of a phobia of getting lost so I promise I will be with you this entire trip. And we won’t be alone. John signed up for us for a tour, you can fill in his spot.”
“Okay. And how long will this vacation last?”
“3 weeks, give or take.”
Eric looks at her in disbelief. “.... What about your job?”
“Don’t worry about it; I can do my job remotely. And you better really take this time to relax. I mean it, Eric. You’ve been working nonstop ever since you became a full–time artist, and you’re locked up in your home, seldomly going out only to buy groceries and books. You’re straining yourself, it’s not good. I’m worried.”
Eric couldn’t reply right away. It’s true that he hasn’t taken a break since he took being an artist seriously and made a living out of it, and he didn’t get to hang out with other friends. At some point, he has forgotten to enjoy his life. “Alright, alright. I’m sorry for making you worry about me. I promise to take a rest on this trip and enjoy myself.”
“Really?!”
“But! I’m bringing my Ipad with me. No, I wouldn’t be working so scratch that frown off your face. I can’t just not draw or write, my whole life revolves around it. I wouldn’t pick up the tablet unless inspiration strikes me. Deal?”
Liza thought for a moment. “Deal.”
“Great! Now, help me pack.”
The Statue’s Artist
Prologue: The Dream
“Careful, my love.”
“Hurry up, Hades. We don’t want to keep our guest waiting now, do we?” Persephone says, prompting her husband to row faster which made the God of the Underworld chuckle. She had just received word from the ferryman that there’s a guest waiting at the gates of the Underworld that refuses to enter.
When both Hades and Persephone are almost at the gates, they could see Charon, the ferryman, panicking, and Kerberos, the 3-headed dog that guards the Gates of the Underworld, down on his stomach, making small whine noises as if trying to comfort someone.
When the lovers’ punt pulls up, Persephone immediately runs to the duo and sees a little girl crying. “What happened?” Persephone questioned Charon. She petted Kerberos, telling him that he’s a good boy.
“I was to transport her to the other side but she became frightened as she looked at me and started crying, My Lady.” Charon reveals in dismay. “Forgive me, My Lord.” Charon bows to the God of the Underworld, “I have failed to do my duty.”
“Nonsense!” Persephone defends, “You have done us a great service all these years.” She offered the crying little girl a smile, kneeling to her level and wiping away her tears. “There now, little one. What made you cry?”
“That man is scary.” The little girl replied.
Persephone contained her laughter as she heard a gag noise in the background, assuming it was Charon dramatically offended by the girl’s answer. “Charon? No, darling. He just doesn’t want to show his face, that’s why he’s wearing a hood to cover his face. But he is not scary.”
The Queen of the Underworld stood tall and offered her hand to the girl. “How about my husband and I will be the one to help you cross this river? What do you think?”
This surprises Hades. He’s not one to personally deliver a soul across the River Styx. He has never delivered a soul across.
The girl looks at Hades before looking back at Persephone, nodding her head as she came closer to Persephone and took the Queen’s hand.
“Darling, would that be okay?” Persephone looked at her husband.
The look on his wife’s face is telling him ‘you better say yes or else.’ There’s no one who could ever challenge his authority like his wife and he enjoys it.
Hades let out a low chuckle. “My Queen has spoken. We will be the ones to take her across.” He walked up to Persephone to kiss her on the lips.
~
Eric glared at the alarm clock on his night table as he reached to turn off the alarm. It says 7 in the morning. Why he set up his alarm that early, he doesn’t remember. He turned to the side and pulled his blanket up to his shoulder, trying to get back to sleep. Few tosses and turns later, Eric came to conclude that his eyes are still tired but his mind is already awake.
Forcing himself to sit up, he stares into the wall of posters in front of him. He got out of bed and made his way to the kitchen to make himself breakfast and his very needed coffee.
Images of a tall man and a curly redhead lady both dressed in black garments flashes in his mind when he places the frying pan on the burning flame of the stove. Eric vividly remembers the kiss at the end of the dream. He touches his lips.
How odd.
