“so...you’re an architect, right?” eric glanced at their new companion as they walked towards the cafe, just down the block. “does that mean you’re going to be making all the -- the fancy buildings, or are you more -- with the wider -- town, city --” eric gestured randomly in front of them, before giving up with a sheepish smile, “i actually don’t know much about architecture, so please, tell me everything,” they laughed.

“They do both darling. Though, occasionally, I am also incredibly inspired and agree to do it anyways. But that’s even rarer than the designer brands,” she said. “Not surprisingly, Apple Peak is not exactly the fashion capital of the world.”
“So, if you don’t mind my asking, if Apple Peak isn’t very...haute couture...are you the kind who’s waiting to get out or are you thinkin’ of starting something here?” they asked, curious.

“i usually go by the three minutes on each side method, that usually does the trick,” truman shrugged. “truman tsai. constantly surprised by how many people i don’t know in this small town.”
“three minutes it is.” they made their way back to the kitchen, and immediately found two pots. “you ever hear of this de-frosting method?” they turned one pot over, put the steak on top, and then filled the other pot with water and placed that on top of the steak. “truman tsai,” they echoed. “honestly, this small town is getting bigger by the week. somehow, people are always drawn to apple peak. you been here all your life, or...?”

Juliet gave an immediate, gut-wrenching laugh as soon as Eric started to yell her name. Her eyes shone with happiness upon looking at them – not only were they a good friend to her, but she considered them to be one of her closest friends. “Just because it’s morning does not mean you should be screaming my name to the heavens, Eric,” she reasoned, still laughing. “But yes, alright – I’m coming.” Walking up towards the boat, she then flung her arms around Eric, hugging them tightly and saying, “Goodness, I missed you! How have you been?”
As soon as Juliet was within hugging range, Eric pulled her into the tightest embrace. “Aw, I missed you, kiddo --” they smiled, spinning her around a little. “I’ve been good! I’ve been good, I -- I got back a while ago but it’s been a race against time trying to get everything sorted with Mom and all the fishing. I’ve got presents, though! For you and Archie and -- are you still with Tarzan?” they did a teasing grin.

Cierra raised an eyebrow. No one had ever called her a baby face. Admittedly, they were usually focused on her body, which was hardly that of a baby’s. “Good, because I am booked for the next three months. I only squeeze people in for Prada. Or, occasionally, Chanel.”
“God, yeah, I remember having a rather awesome time trying to get the wifi to work on my laptop just so I could reply to you to confirm that. Three-ish months ago. Eric Anker,” they mentioned, just in case the artist wasn’t sure. “Prada, Chanel -- are those the, uh, shoes or the bags?”

“but if you were coming to the park anyways,” roz pointed out with a grin, “you should’ve brought the sweet baby along! honestly, i might just steal him from you if you don’t take him on your walks.”
“...but the pier is right there...” eric gesticulated even wilder. “okay fine, how about this -- you wanna see him so bad? you up for a little boat ride along the coast?”

eric had the sails of their sailboat folded up. there was no wind to push the boat around anyway, and even if there were, eric would have preferred to just stay still. that was what they were doing right now, lying spread-eagled at the top of the bow. ‘cool’ by the jonas brothers played faintly on a transistor radio.
eric had the sleeve of their jumper covering their hand, their wrist stained with tears, their cheeks stained with tear-tracks. it was one of those days where, for no reason, everything that went wrong, was going wrong, and could go wrong, hit eric all at once. and they were immobilised. so they did what they always did: run away.
“cool...feeling so cool...” they sang along weakly.
What would I give to live where you are. What would I pay to stay here beside you. What would I do to see you smiling at me. Where would we walk. Where would we run, If we could stay all day in the sun. Just you and me and I could be part of your world.

“That would be me, but if you’re looking for a job, you have to ask my manager. I don’t deal with the hiring process for that particular venture.” He paused for a moment. “You don’t want the answer to that.”
“All good with a job, but thank you though. Unless you need to hire a videographer for some event or function. Then I’m your person,” they smiled, showing a thumbs-up as well. “But, yeah, sure, fair enough. Is this a...don’t tell anyone, or you’ll kill me sort of thing?”

“If you insist,” she said, mildly annoyed. She had never been much of a morning person. Cierra began setting everything out. “Just as long as you aren’t here to get a tattoo. I’m still not entirely convinced you are old enough to get one without permission.”
Eric sensed that maybe their presence wasn’t 100% welcome, and they hovered awkwardly by the doorway. “Nope, definitely not here for a tattoo yet. I’m on at three-thirty, aren’t I? This is just a pit-stop to, uh...” Eric made an awkward hand gesture, “somewhere until later. And, whoa there, I’m twenty-four. Takes a baby-face to know a baby-face.”

“s’a good movie,” truman shrugged, his expression immediately changing at the question eric posed. as if he would ever ask for a steak well-done he responded, “medium rare is the only right answer here.”
“i’ll put it on the list. is it gonna make me cry?” they added, half-joking, half-serious. then eric laughed. “all-righty then, medium rare it is. don’t hate me if it isn’t exactly medium rare, though. i usually just try the hand test and that’s...a hit and miss, at best. and we’re lucky these aren’t fully frozen.” eric poked a finger at the steak. “back to the kitchen! i’m eric, by the way --”

With a delighted laugh, Juliet made her way up the pathway and towards Eric and their boat, holding a basket of snacks in her arms as she did so. “Oh, stop it!” she called back, although the laughter was still clear in her voice. “Do you have any mind for your neighbors, Eric? Why, with that strong, powerful voice, I bet you’ll wake up the whole area!”
At the mention of the neighbours, Eric took a deep breath and screamed: “JUUUULIEEEETTTT --” before Max started barking and jumping on them. “All right, all right, I’m shutting up!” They turned to grin back at Juliet. “It’s morning! Everyone should already be awake! But please, come right this way, madame, since you’re so worried about the welfare of my cranky old neighbours --”

“you haven’t seen the outsiders?” truman shook his head, dismissing the thought and standing to his full 6′4″ height. “i don’t even know whose house this is, but shit i’m down.”
“yeah, but i’ve heard of it,” eric shrugged, as if that solved everything. eric led them down the hallway, pushing a door that opened to a rather large garage, with two audis and a whole wall of sports medals and trophies. eric ignored all that and headed for the freezer. “red meat, dear god, thank you --” they took out two plastic trays. “you like your steaks medium or well-done?”
