This is my first draft of my personal project video that will be shown on the 30th of March!
MEET THE CREW!
MY GIFT FOR THEM
When I visited the orphanage a week before the actual visitation (with the food and movies) I saw the Sekolah Mentari, had also visited the orphanage and they gave them this framed picture of their days work in that orphanage, which inspired me to do the same. Today, I have designed what I will give them as a way for them to remember us. *The pictures will be on a different post*
PREPERATION FOR THE EXHIBITION
In less than one week, I have my personal project exhibition. I am planning to bring three gadgets on the exhibition day. I will most probably bring the following items to the exhibition:
My laptop to view my view the video of the whole project.
My brother's laptop to view my process journal (this tumblr page).
An iPad to view the pictures of the orphanage visitation.
A board with my goal of this project, information on the orphanage visitation.
My mickey mouse oreo pops (25) to show them what I did to get money.
My fried oreos (25) to show them what i did to get the money.
A comment form (100) to ask feedback from the audience/visitors
QUESTIONS ON "LASKAR PELANGI"
This too is also late. I originally made this on February 27 and that is why the tense of this post is unfitting. Again, I am sorry for the mishap.
The following are the simple questions I am going to ask the kids for the quiz *note: the questions I'm actually going to ask are in Indonesian. The questions below is the translated version of the question I am going to ask in a few days*:
What is the name of their school? SD MUHAMMADIYAH
How many kids do they need for this school year? 10
Who is the class captain? Lintang
What is the name of the last kid to enter the school? Harun
Who is this *show picture of Lintang (character)*? Lintang
Who is this *show picture of Sahara (character)*? Sahara
What is the name of their teacher? Bu Muslimmah
What is the moral of this movie? To never give up on your dream, or any other reasonable answer they might have, as this movie has many inspirational morals.
In this interview, we ask the orphans if they enjoyed the visitation (which they did, they were happy). This video is in Indonesian.
EXTREMELY LONG OVERDUED BUDGET PLANNING!
I must admit, I forgot to update my tumblr page/process journal. This budget plan is super super late because I keep on forgetting to upload this online but I am going to now, so please forgive me.
BUDGET PLAN
90 boxes of food-includes chicken, "capcay", tofu and rice: Rp. 1.300.000
2 boxes of "Prima Mineral Water 240ML": Rp. 30.000
Instant noodles (fried and soup form): Rp. 100.000
"Momogi" Snacks, 60 pcs (PRIZE): Rp. 30.000
Lollypops (SNACK): Rp. 20.000
"Tango"(PRIZE): Rp. 20.000
Other Snacks : Rp. 55.000
Tissues: Rp. 30.000
The above was only an estimated price of each thing I bought with the collected money that came in the form of selling items, and from asking donations. All in all, I expected to finish all my money (1.6 million). On d-day, I had more items to give to them because of the generosity of the following people's hearts:
Valerie T.
Mrs. Ligna T.
Bess K.
Khalisha S.
Atahlia K.
Mr. Paulus D.
Mrs. Grace W.
Ms. Marni (I do not know her full name)
I thank them all because of their help, I had more to give to the orphans, and that I am truly grateful for. In addition to that, I am also thankful for the support team I had on that day, because they too were responsible for the success of that day:
VOLUNTEERS (alphabetized order):
Bess
Bryant
Benny
Hafis
Khalisha
Ryan
Valerie
People who brought the LCD projector:
Pak Eddy
Office boy ( I am very sorry that I can not provide his name. I can't provide his name as I do not know his name)

AFTER THE ORPHANAGE...
WOW!! Just WOW!! Those are the only two words I can use at this very moment to express myself on the events of today. We left early in the morning! That is for sure! I ended up in Valerie's house at about 7 AM and we departed for Bekasi half an hour later. FInding the orphanage was no longer a problem, so there wasn't any loss of time. Luckily, the SCTV crew set-ed up the LCD screen and projector the day before. In addition to that, they were earlier than us.
By the time we got into the orphanage, little kids were hugging us. Some of us, including myself, was a little shocked and uncomfortable at first, but then, we soon lightened up and started talking somewhat normally.
The first thing we did was that, we took the name tag stickers and started asking their names and age. That by itself alone was a huge learning experience. I realized at about in the middle of asking their names, that these kids, were kids, and they thought things were a joke. I could spot only a few kids who were being nice and honest, well the rest were nice and child-like (which is what I should've expected). I also realized that I had been asking the questions wrongly, which I then later improved on.
Afterwards, I did the introduction by getting the mike (yes, the crew brought a mike, how sweet of them!) and saying hello and hi (if I say hi, they say hello, if i say hello, they say hi). I introduced them to my self, Valerie, Bess, Khalisha, Hafis, Ryan S./Soebi, Bryant and Benny. I told them to call us "kaka" but we later found out that some of them were older than us.
When the movie was played, Valerie and I, along with some more volunteers, started making the teams up. We tried as best as we can, but we soon realized that making the group would be hard, as not all of the orphans were counted. We then realize, that some of the orphans we have listed, were literally just toddlers (meaning there was a high chance that they were having nap time during the movie watching). We decided that we might as well wing it, which eventually, led us to a proper personal project (it wasn't full 100% by fate that success happened. It was becuase there was still a "backbone" of a plan still intact combined with our natural instincts).
After everyone had lunch, we had the funnest quiz game ever! It might have been because I wasn't that prepared, which made it funny for the orphans to see me running back and forth and back and forth, with no shoes on (I was too lazy to put them back on and off). The most important part was that, they had lots of fun, many genuine smiles and laughs were there, and they actually learned something from Laskar Pelangi (they were able to answer the questions we gave them)
There was this one child, I think his name is Nelson, he could actually tell me the moral of the story, and he was less than 10 years old. Immediately, my heart melted, the movie actually got through to his age group! I made Yany and Mia's group the first place winner, and Nelson's group take 2nd place (just because he could answer that question). In the end of the quiz, everyone had fun, and expected more games, which we gladly gave them.
I got this game from the catholic retreat I joined earlier in the year (around the month of January). It's hard to describe it in ink, so I'll let it explain itself in video, which I will upload soon.
3rd March 2012 - one of the most rewarding and fun days I have ever experienced!! Love the day and the people I shared it with!
25/02/2012
Today I went to the orphanage, all the way in Bekasi. It took around an hour to get to the location just because the orphanage itself, is far away from the actual main road of Bekasi (counting from the highway that for us, starts in Pondok Indah).
Once my friend Bess and I reached the orphanage, we find Suster Monica and asked several questions such as, how many kids are there? how many care takers or supervisors there? can we watch a movie there? is there enough space? can we have a game afterwards? and the like. I was pretty satisfied with her answers and took note of them.
After meeting Suster Monica, Bess and I went to Lotte Mart in Gandaria City, and bought somethings that we will need- just like in the list below:
Mie Goreng
Mie Kuah
Aqua Gelas
Lollipops
Snacks
Prize food after games
CHANGE OF ORPHANAGES
So because of lack of planning, the previous orphanage has been booked by someone else, but don't worry, with the intervention and guidance of my mother, she helped me find a new orphanage, which name is, Panti Asuhan TAMAN FIORETI, which sadly for me is located in Bekasi ( a very far place ), but it does not matter anymore because it was really hard for me to find another orphanage in such short notice. Anyways, I have also changed the date to the visitation to March 3, 2012. The dates have been confirmed so there will be no more changing of the dates.
I have also confirmed the dates of the LCD projector and the like and have given them the time of when they have to reach the address.
This Saturday, I will be going to the location and check out the location, how many kids they have and any other details. I will also start to order the food by this week and start thinking of how I can present the food in a better way.
E (initial) was the boy who found the sprinkles inside his Mickey Mouse Oreo Pops.
Suprise, suprise....
I decided to make a little game out of selling the treats (Mickey Mouse Oreo Pops and Fried Oreos). I added in sprinkles in the inside of two Micky Mouse Oreo Pops and have decided that anyone who purchases those Oreo Pops will have their picture taken and be put on this tumblr and to ask their whole and honest opinion on the treats I have been selling as I have yet to collect honest opinions about what I have been selling. It will be interesting who will get the Oreo Pops with the sprinkles inside because I do not remember which pops have the sprinkles so I have no control over the game. I only made a dozen of the Mickey Mouse Oreo Pops and I made two dozen Fried Oreos. At first there were 25 but I had to taste one just to be sure it tasted fine. Regarding that, I dont know what to say. I tasted it and maybe it tasted weird because I started using Golden Oreos and not the original ones (just to show some variation, there are the original ones though) but for me, it somehow makes me think of sweet potato and not Oreo cookies. Hopefully people will like it tomorrow!
MOOD: OPTIMISTIC AND HOPEFUL
Fried Oreo's! Suprisingly good...
A long long time ago, I had the idea to make some food and sell them at school (and yes I did have permission from my teachers-mainly my pp supervisor and my subject teacher for pp in semester one). One day, I decided I have to sell something quick or else I'll be doing my project crammed up in a day or a week (procrastination much) so I searched online some recipe's for easy treats.
Then I came across the idea of making Oreo pops. They are basically one piece of double stuf Oreo's and one piece of mini Oreo sandwiches. Split the mini ones in half and stick them in the middle (where the filling is) and make them into the shape of Mickey Mouse. I decided to make Mickey Mouse Oreo pops because for one thing, the design alone was so cute that I thought would buy it just because it was cute. Another reason why I decided to make Mickey Mouse Oreo pops was because they were so easy to make and didn't require much cooking (to my advantage).
The only cooking required during the making of the pops were to melt the cooking chocolate for the dip. That was easy because for one thing, the chocolate needed to be melted in a double boiler, which meant that the possibility of burning the chocolate was a little smaller (that's what I figured anyway) and since my parents don't trust me with fire (their afraid I'm going to blow off my hand or the like) someone else had to melt the chocolate for me.
My last reason to why I made Micky Mouse Oreo pops was because I knew that everyone loves oreos, oreos can do no harm in satisfying customers especially when they are at school. Anyway, the next day I brought the Mickey Mouse oreo pops to school-selling it for Rp. 5.000 each, and surprisingly it sold faster than I would've expected (to be completely honest, I thought I would end up buying the pops myself). I learned many things that day. To be specific on the product, people do not enjoy the sprinkles I added in. When I tasted the sprinkles, they actually tasted like candy, but as the saying goes, the customer is always right.
Another thing that I learned (I'm quite embarrassed that I actually did this as it is some what idiotic in a business-y way) is that I am not supposed to tell my customers the actual price of making each treat. I thought honesty was key so I explained why the price was Rp. 5.000 as it seemed too high of a price for a small treat. I told them that it costs Rp. 4.100 to make it but because it was for orphan children, I had felt as if I had to raise the price to make profit which would go to them. I was then reminded by my best friend that I wasn't supposed to do that (very very idiotic of me, my brain wasn't functioning as well as it usually was on that day). I am going to make sure that I will never do that ever again (lesson learned).
Well anyways, after all the Mickey Mouse Oreo pops were sold a classmate of mine asked if I could make Fried Oreos. I thought of it and YES! It was a very good idea. The recipe I found required me to make a batter from pancake mix (wasn't too hard because it required just a few very common ingredients) and to fry it. At first I failed to fry them correctly (I left them frying too long-it burned) but as time progressed they started to become better. During frying the Oreos, many things rushed into my mind. One of them was this fear of under cooking the Oreos so what I did was I shoved a tooth pick into the Fried Oreo and took it off. If it was cooked there shouldn't be any goo on the tooth pick when I retracted it and yes there was no goo.
I sold the fried oreos for Rp. 3.000. On that day I had to juggle making a dozen Fried Oreos, a dozen Mickey Mouse Pops and study for school work. It was a challenge but the thrill of accomplishment I felt when I saw all of the Fried Oreo's disappearing one by one was worth it! People loved the Fried Oreos because it was cheaper and it tasted good (a person did say it wasn't crunchy enough but that was because I made them the night before, of course it wouldn't be as crunchy as intended).
I have counted the money I have received from the treat selling and I have Rp. 150.000. Not bad! The following day of selling the treats some people asked if I were going to sell the cookies again. I asked permission from my supervisor and thankfully he said yes. I will be selling the Fried Oreos (because people really enjoy them) next week.
