Still feeling like Christmas outside this morning with very chilly temperatures in the low to mid 30s all across West Tennessee. A few areas of patchy frosty were also reported before temperatures quickly began to warm as the sun came up over the horizon. Vibrant reds, oranges and whites filled the skies south of I-40 this morning making it a morning to possibly even get out that camera you may have gotten for Christmas while wearing that heavy sweater from grandma just to stay warm.

Clouds will continue to increase over the Mid-South today as moisture surges in off the Gulf of Mexico. Winds will increase out of the south bringing even a weak sticky factor to the region later on this afternoon. High temperatures in many locations will top out in the mid to upper 50s with some areas especially south making it into the lower 60s. You will be trading the long sleeves and heavy jackets at the mall for short sleeves so you don't end up burning up between stores.

Tonight you will really notice the clouds on the increase across the area. Skies will become overcast and gloomy with maybe even a few showers breaking out points west of the Mississippi as well as south of the viewing area. Lows will not cool down that much with many areas dipping down into the upper 40s and low 50s. The clouds will act as a thermal blanket allowing more warm air to funnel in underneath of them. These clouds though will pose issues to viewing the International Space Station which is set to roll through around 5:29 PM-5:35 PM this evening. Light jackets are recommended.

The weekend looks to be a super soaking. Rainfall arrives before sunrise Saturday and spreads quickly east through the morning hours. Southerly winds will be cranking as the front nears the area at 10-15 miles per hour adding to the moisture. Highs tomorrow will get into the mid to upper 50s once again with many of the northern counties in the upper 40s and low 50s under gray skies. Umbrellas and rain jackets will get a workout this weekend with 0.5"-1"+ of rainfall expected.

Sunday much of the same conditions can be expected. Rain will be heavy at times during the early morning hours before slowly tapering off in the afternoon. The difference is that it will be raw as cold air funnels on in. Highs will only be in the mid to 40s with the need of a rain jacket as well as thermals just to stay warm.

Monday looks better but colder as highs get back into the upper 30s and low 40s. Even colder air than that as the arctic freezer unloads on Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs may struggle to make 40 degrees. Long term we are watching a storm that is possible for New Years Day. We could see a wintry mix to start with warmer air changing everything over later in the day. It will all depend on the track as well as availability of the cold air. WEATHER UPDATE - 10 AM CST MONDAY DECEMBER 22, 2014

After a very foggy morning across portions of West Tennessee more rain is starting to fill on in over the area. This Christmas Eve Eve is looking very wet where tools like the umbrellas and windshield wipers will become pretty handy. The trade off is that temperatures still remain on the mild side as warm air continues to funnel into the area with some pretty sticky dew-points. More rain is on the way with maybe even a strong t-storm or two the farther south you go into Mississippi.

For the rest of your Monday you can on and ff showers and storms once again with highs in the mid to upper 50s across most of the area. A few upper 40s and low 50s cannot be ruled out across our extreme northwest counties and along the Mississippi River where the cold front pushes through later on today. Skies will remain gray and gloomy along with winds increasing late pumping in more moisture.

Tonight will see the brunt of the rain as our area of low pressure gets going to our south. This area of stormy weather will track north and east across middle Tennessee later on this evening giving us the brunt of our rainfall. Temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 50s for many as the low passes with colder air ushering in on the backside. Rainfall amounts will be in the neighborhood of .5" to maybe a inch or more with locally heavier downpours if were lucky. This will be much needed rain as we are down 1.51" of rain for the month of December.

Rain showers continue into your Christmas Eve morning with maybe even a little bit of snow flurry action setting the festive tone. Low pressure exits and dry air moves in around lunchtime allowing the faucet to be turned off over West Tennessee. Skies will continue to remain gray with slow clearing of those skies by the time Santa Claus rolls on in. Santa and is reindeer maybe be using the low beams on the sled along with the heavy coats as fog may become an issue along with the plummeting temperatures.

The cold doesn't last for long as the Christmas holiday and Santa Claus himself brings warmer weather .Sunshine returns in abundance with strong southerly winds bringing in temps that could near 50 degrees.

We get even warmer than that by Friday before our next chance of rain arrives by Saturday. The roller coaster ride continues as the weather continues to remain active going into the new year.

There is some bad news as the "Arctic Freezer" looks to open on West Tennessee by the end of the weekend into early next week.

WEATHER UPDATE: TUESDAY MORNING DECEMBER 23 5 AM CST

Today started out pretty overcast over much of the area. We even had a bit of a stickiness factor this morning with increasing humidity values as well as dew-points over the area allowing our atmosphere to soak up like a sponge that will dump rain over the area today. We are already seeing rain showers surging in from the west and even the south as moisture pushes in very quickly off the Gulf of Mexico. The cold front and area of low pressure is still back to our west across the southern Great Plains with more rain ready to take aim on west Tennessee.

As the rain showers move into the area were also gonna notice the winds increasing out of the south southeast at 10-15 miles per hour making for dicey conditions on the roads a little later on this afternoon. These breezy conditions will bring even warmer air into the area with highs today reaching on up into the low to middle 50s.

Tonight the rain should taper off slowly after the midnight hour as a dry wedge of air pushes in between systems. Aftermidnight will be the best bet for dry overcast conditions before the rain ramps back up by Tuesday morning. The rain on Tuesday will be heavy at times as low pressure tracks across the Gulf Coast States into the Tennessee River Valley. We will be on the west side of the system so our rainfall amounts will not be too impressive with accumulations of 0.5" to 1"+ with locally heavier amounts possible. The winds will also continue with more mild air Tuesday. Highs will be in the low to mid 50s once again before temperatures fall off the deep end Tuesday night as cold air tries to bleed in.

If the cold air gets here in time we could even see a few snow flurries across the Tennessee and Kentucky border as low pressure moves out of the area. Skies will be overcast once again for Christmas Eve with gradual clearing late Wednesday just in time for Santa to arrive. As skies clear temperatures will drop rapidly into the upper 20s and low 30s.

Christmas Day we will be on the rebound as high pressure settles on in with readings in the upper 40s and low 50s. A lot better then the Thanksgiving where we dealt with gray and gloomy skies.

Next chance for rain arrives late Friday into Saturday as the roller coaster ride continues with the temps. Even colder air plummets in just in time for next weekend.

Get ready since Winter is finally here and stay dry as you do some of that last minute shopping later on today.

Long range trends continue to signal to even colder weather early next week. Winter is finally here so bundle up and stay warm. Spring will be here before you know it.

WEATHER UPDATE: 5:10 PM CST SUN DEC 21, 2014

After a frosty start this morning with temperatures in the mid to upper 20s, temperatures rebounded quickly. Plentiful sunshine helped us get all the way up into the mid to upper 50s with some areas to the south even nearing 60 degrees.

A little hard to believe that we are seeing mild conditions like this when our average high temperature for this time of year is in the upper 40s.

There is more warm weather on the way though for the start of the Christmas week. It will come at a cost as clouds slowly build into the region this evening and during the day on Monday. Lows tonight will not be as cold in the upper 30s and low 40s due to increased moisture overspreading the area. Winds will also be increasing out of the south at 10-15 miles per hour bringing in even warmer air.

Monday will sort of be a transition with bigger changes down the line for Tuesday. We will see the sunshine and dry conditions for most of the day Monday but clouds will quickly increase as the front nears the area. Southeasterly winds will pick up at 10-15 miles per hour gusting over 20 miles per hour at times. This will actually add a bit of a stickiness factor by the afternoon hours which will be a little strange for December. Short sleeves will be a must with the umbrella returning into the line up by late Monday evening into the overnight hours. Temperatures Monday will near 60 degrees in many locations or top that mark before clouds move.

Showers and thunderstorms could be possible to our west as well as across northern portions of Mississippi late Monday night as the frontal boundary and moisture surges over the area. Winds will continue to crank straight on into Tuesday as the bulk of the rain and stormy weather moves in.

Tuesday will be the day of the rain and thunderstorms. Umbrellas will be handy tool with the raincoats. Stormy weather will be possible over the area leading to the possibility of very heavy rainfall, poor drainage flooding, and even a little small hail.Will continue to watch this situation although no severe weather is expected at this time. Rainfall amounts could close in on a much needed inch.

Wednesday will feature a few rain showers to start with maybe a snow flurry or two across northwest sections of west Tennessee. The cold air just does not look as if it will make here in time to give us the utmost hope of snow this Christmas Eve. Temperatures will fall though as skies clear making for highs that struggle to reach 40 degrees.

Christmas is looking good with mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s and low 50s. The "Big Red Man AKA Santa" brings even warmer conditions with a return of the rainfall later this week.

Ursids Meteor Shower Taking Place Sunday Evening

When Are The Best Times For Viewing?

First and foremost find an area away from very bright lights and look up and east.

The peak of the 2014 Ursid meteor shower will occur Sunday evening. The meteor shower will start December 21st and the morning of December 22nd. Sunday December 22nd and Monday evening December 23rd may also feature decent viewing conditions.

The meteors will radiate from the Constellation Ursa Minor where they get their name from.

According to NASA Ursids meteors increase in there brightness late evening into the overnight hours. As many as 15-20 meteors + per hour could be seen flying through the sky.

The reasons why we see the most meteors during the late evening and overnight hours is because Earth in its own orbit pushes itself right into the path of the meteor river stream. The later we get in time the more that the forward side of Earth meets the meteor river stream head on.

Viewing Conditions:

Mainly clear skies with a few high clouds. It will finally be not as cold with lows in the mid to upper 30s to low 40s in urbanized areas. Winds will also be calm eliminating any chance of a wind chill. Light jackets recommended.

WEATHER UPDATE: 8:45 PM CST SAT DEC 20 2014

The sunshine finally returned today and actually stuck around for a good chunk of the day. With the sunshine and high pressure overhead temperatures climbed to near 50 degrees in many locations. Skies also cleared of any cloud cover allowing temperatures to fall rapidly this evening into the overnight hours. Thermometers everywhere are showing digits in the low to middle 30s making it a night for the heavy winter coats and blankets just to stay warm. Patchy fog could also become an issue as humidity slowly increases over the area especially in the river valley regions. If you are traveling late night tonight you want to beware of that as well as the frosty temperatures.

Sunday shows another great day ahead. It will be a day of plenty of sunshine despite a cold start. If you have anything to do outdoors with the kids or maybe even just hang the last minute decorations it will be a great day for it. Temperatures throughout the day will be in the low to middle 50s with a few upper 40s across northwest Tennessee. Light jackets will be needed although winds will shift out of the east southeast by the afternoon hours warming temperatures.

As the wind shifts in the afternoon hours of your Sunday temperatures will begin to hold steady by the nighttime hours. Skies will remain clear going into Sunday although high clouds should build in after the midnight hour keeping temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s.

Monday will also be a great day with mild conditions. Highs will be in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. Skies will become cloudy though by the afternoon hours as our storm system nears the area. Winds will also pick up out of the south at 10 to 15 mph ushering in warm moist air. Dew points will surge into the mid to upper 50s even adding a stickiness factor Monday and Tuesday.

Rain showers will start to break out by midnight Monday with the bulk of the rainfall and even a thunderstorm by Tuesday. No severe weather is expected as the threat remains well to our south. Heavy rain will be an issue though as low pressure tracks right over the area. Temperatures will once again be in the mid to upper 50s before falling throughout the day as the cold front passes through the area.

Temperatures fall rapidly Tuesday evening possibly to near freezing. This brings our secondary threat come Christmas Eve morning Wednesday with residual moisture in place to give us a few snow showers. No accumulation is expected but bitter cold will rush back in with highs struggling to get out of the upper 30s. By the time Santa arrives temperatures will be in the low to middle 20s making it feel more like the holiday and Winter.

Christmas is looking good as the sunshine returns with highs near 50 degrees. More rain though and another roller coaster ride in temperatures is expected by next weekend.

Alaska Storm Breaking Records: Sends Arctic Blast South

The storm that will alter our weather pattern is breaking records off the coast of Alaska. The remnants of Super Typhoon Nuri have become the "Bering Sea Bomb." The storm is the strongest on record for the area with a pressure of 924 mb beating the old record of 925 mb in Dutch Harbor, Alaska back in 1977. The storm has forced the crew of the hit series "Deadliest Catch" to take an early Thanksgiving vacation since waves are well over 50-100 ft.

This storm system will alter the jet stream for the continental United States. It will also produce the first winter storm across the northern tier. Temperatures will be on the order of 20-30 degrees below average as our first wave of cold weather moves on in.

So get ready now with the warmer layers and maybe even wrap those pipes to protect from a freeze. The roller coaster ride begins tomorrow with a nosedive the looks to end in the frigid grips of Winter.

WEATHER DISCUSSION: NOVEMBER 9TH, 2014

Lows tonight will be cold though as skies continue to clear out and winds remain calm. This will create the perfect ingredients for temperatures to drop into the low to mid 30s. I don't think areas along the Tennessee river Valley will get into the upper 20s this evening based on the weak southerly winds but just as a precautionary have those heavy jackets ready anywhere you go tomorrow morning just to stay warm.

Monday looks like the best day out of the next 7 days. Many locations will get into the mid to upper 60s and even low 70s. "Mother Nature" will be teasing us with what a typical November really is suppose to feel like here in West Tennessee. Clouds will increase during the late afternoon and early evening hours Monday as the cold frontal boundary nears the area.

Monday night will be the last of the mild and breezy conditions. Lows not too shabby in the upper 40s and low 50s with southerly winds blowing at 10-15 mph. Showers or sprinkles could be possible though going into early Tuesday morning up toward the Bootheel of the Missouri and E. Arkansas.

Wednesday through Friday will mark the coldest air by far this seasonal. Highs Wednesday will be in to the mid to upper 40s with wake up temperatures Thursday morning in the mid to upper 20s. It gets worse as the temperature train drives right off the cliff. Highs Thursday and Friday could struggle to make 40 degrees in many locations as the core of cold air overtakes the area. Lows overnight will be dangerously cold in the upper teens and low 20s with wind chills possibly lower than that.

You will want to prepare now by getting out all of your warm winter clothing and even wrapping those pipes in an insulated barrier before the cold rolls on in.

Cold air could even stick with us right through the weekend. This may be bad news as a storm system could be right on its heels giving us a possible shot of wintry weather. Stay tuned for further forecast and updates on this situation as it is still too early to tell.

ARCTIC EXPRESS MOVING ON IN!!!

A beautiful below normal Fall day all across West Tennessee. Despite a few clouds thanks to a cold front that past through the area, temps made it into the upper 50s and even 60 degrees in some locations. Skies have recently cleared as the front pushed east and high pressure settles on in. This has calmed the winds allowing temps to drop pretty quickly this evening so you will want to bundle up. Lows tonight will be in the low to mid 30s under mainly clear skies. Patchy fog will build in overnight tonight especially in those low lying and rural areas so beware on the roads. Also the International Space Station will be making its return to the skies for 2 mins early Sunday morning around 4:28 AM through 4:30 AM. If your extremely early riser enjoy the view.

Southwesterly flow returns late Sunday as high pressure moves east. This should get our temperatures near 60 degrees in many locations tomorrow afternoon. The weather will be great to get out in the yard to rake the leaves, start the mower one last time, or even build a pile of leaves to play in. Lows Sunday will actually warm up a bit under clear skies with lows in the upper 30s and low 40s. Monday will probably be the best day out of the next 7 temperature wise especially for those who like the warm temps. Conditions will be breezy out of the south pumping in those mild readings that could be in the upper 60s and even low 70s the further south you go. Even the nighttime lows will feel good in the upper 40s and low 50s.The warm temps or good news doesn't last for long as big time changes arrive for Veterans Day Tuesday.

We will transition quickly Tuesday thanks to a powerful cold frontal boundary. This boundary looks to arrive during the late morning and early afternoon hours. It should spark of some on and off rain showers and cloudy conditions. Rainfall amounts look to be on the light side but the need for the umbrellas will come in handy. Temps will fall throughout the day with the high temperature most likely reached in the morning. Wednesday will feature the start of the arctic blast. Our one way ticket on the "Polar Express" gets rolling with highs in the mid 40s Wednesday and nighttime lows by Thursday morning in the low to middle 20s.

The front combined with the remnants of Super Typhoon Nuri will alter the jet stream sending a dangerous arctic blast our way.

Even colder conditions arrives as the polar plunge arrives in full force by Thursday and Friday with highs struggling to get out of the upper 30s and low 40s. Get prepared now and have the winter clothing ready. Hats, scarfs, winter jackets, gloves, and thermals will all be needed by the time we get toward the end of the workweek.

Enjoy the warm weather while it last as "Ole Man Winter" is moving on in. Not your typical November ahead!

Record Breaking Temps & Roller Coaster Ride To Reality

Hopefully you enjoyed the warm temperatures this weekend across West TN. We are in store for one more day of the heat and humidity

which could land us in the the record books. Its all courtesy of a large dome of high pressure producing lots of warm air over a good chunk of the country. This has allowed the winds to turn out of the southwest over our area funneling in tropical air off the Gulf of Mexico.

All good things must coming to an end as it looks as if we will storm back into reality thanks to a cold front off to our west. This cold front will dig a large trough of cool air into our area just in time for Halloween.

We will call it "Transition Tuesday" as "Mother Nature's" trick or treat with the heat comes to an end. The rain and stormy conditions look to arrive early Tuesday morning into Tuesday afternoon.

The rain doesn't stick around for long though as everything gets out of here by late Tuesday into Wednesday leaving us with chilly conditions. You will be saying"BRRR"or at least have the chills by the time the spooky Halloween weekend rolls through.

Sunday October 26, 2014 Weather Discussion West TN

Another day for those shorts and t-shirts all across West Tennessee with highs in the in the low to mid 80s. We are currently 85 degrees here in Jackson which is two degrees off the old record of 87 degrees back in 2004. Temperatures rebounded nicely from a very mild morning in the upper 50s as well as dense fog that prompted an advisory a little earlier on this morning. It looks as if tonight will be even milder with lows in the upper 50s and 60s courtesy of a warm front pushing north. The warm front will put us in line for record breaking temperatures tomorrow and even more steamy conditions. Winds will also be cranking out of the southwest at 5-15 mph ushering in that warm Gulf of Mexico air. The record to break for Monday is 85 degrees which was set back in 1950. Clouds should overspread the northwest portions of our area late Monday into Tuesday. The transition though will begin late Tuesday morning as a line of numerous strong showers and storms gets going. The front combined with an area of low pressure look to drop a quick inch or so of rain as it clears the area late Tuesday into Wednesday. Highs Tuesday will generally be in the low to middle 70s under overcast skies with the real difference at night after the front passes through with lows in the upper 40s. Cooler conditions settle in for Wednesday with seasonable averages near 70 degrees. This pattern doesn't last for long as another cold front pulls through Thursday. This will really allow the temperatures to take a polar plunge just in time for Halloween with highs only in the upper 50s and low 60s. Trick or Treat is looking very cold so have those warm layers ready. Highs during the day will top pout in the low 60s and upper 50s with nighttime temps dipping into the mid to upper 30s. I guess this is "Mother nature's" trick or treat on us this week with warm weather that is more suitable for Summer to start and late fall to old man winter's arrival by late week. The weekend looks even worse with highs only making it to the upper 50s. So if you like the warmth enjoy it while it last since Fall and Winter like temperatures will be rushing back to West Tennessee. Have a great night and take advantage of this great weather! Weather Discussion: Thursday October 2, 2014 Severe Wx.

Much of West Tennessee today started out with wall to wall sunshine and morning temps in the upper 50s to mid 60s. The sunshine allowed temperatures to warm very quickly into the md 80s and even a few 90s before clouds increased across the area. A line of showers and storms also formed before the lunchtime hour and pushed to the northeast dumping less than .25” in many neighborhoods. This may have helped us just a little bit here in West Tennessee as more showers and storms continue to form to our west.

We continue to see that slight risk of severe weather right here in West Tennessee from a line west of Martin all the way down to Jackson. The main threats will continue to be damaging winds, large hail, and maybe even a little bit a poor drainage flooding especially if the rain comes down really hard. The good news is that the clouds have moved in over most of the area which could help in preventing these storms from getting two severe. Activity continues to pop up along the Mississippi River as we speak pushing from SW to NE in the coming hours. You accompany that with the clouds and you get a worked over atmosphere with limited fuel for storms to feed off of possibly for Round 2 of the threat which looks to arrive before midnight. Timing will be key as this next round looks to arrive between 4 -7PM with the main line arriving between 9-12 PM tonight. The loss of daytime heating will gradually affect the storms as they progress east toward West TN. The key is to stay weather aware and to keep an eye to the sky this evening especially if you are at any outdoor events. Have an umbrella ready to go along with a safe place to go so you can buckle down as the storms pass.

The stormy weather will end after midnight tonight with gradual clearing late. There may be a few showers leftover across southwest portions of West TN along with northern portions of Mississippi. After that temperatures take an early dive off the deep end with forecast lows only in the mid to upper 40s Friday night.

If you thought that was cold think again. Have the jackets ready all day Saturday for temperatures during the day struggling to get to 70 degrees under sunny skies. Saturday morning lows will dip into the upper 30s making it the coldest air we have seen so far this year. If you have any tender vegetation bring it indoors or cover it up to keep it from getting any damage.

Temperatures warm back up Sunday into the mid to upper 70s. 80 degree weather returns just in time for the workweek ahead.

Pretty interesting feature way up in the North Atlantic around the Icelandic Low. Deepening low pressure that produces all the rain over the east coast last week could get down below 950 mb. Producing a lot of upsloping snow along the coast of Greenland. 3-4 feet + of snow expected along the shore communities.

SUN SEPT. 28, 2014 Most of the region today got to see partly sunny skies while some areas to our north picked up on some spotty showers especially in Obion, Weakley, & Henry counties. There were even a few interesting weather features with some of those showers that formed to our north and back across the Bootheel of Missouri. Landspouts or cold air funnels are what formed under some of these showers. You may be asking what are these interesting weather features? Simply put landspouts or cold air funnels are columns of spinning air that are formed when very cold air aloft overlaps warm moist air at the surface to create lift. The good news is that landspouts rarely touch the ground and are only brief so they don't cause damage. The good news is that things are quieting down and clearing out quickly across West Tennessee. Clouds are slowly decreasing as high pressure takes over allowing clearing skies this evening. This will allow temperatures to drop into the mid to upper 50s and low 60s overnight. Winds will be cam so you will want to watch out for patchy dense fog tomorrow morning. Monday through Thursday we will see temperatures begin the climb into the mid to upper 80s. Skies will remain mostly to partly sunny with clouds slowly over-spilling the area late Wednesday. A few isolated showers and storms cannot be ruled Wednesday afternoon as Gulf of Mexico moisture surges into the area. The best chance of rain remains Thursday afternoon as our cold front approaches the area forcing Fall to return. We may even see a few severe thunderstorms especially in our northern counties late Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening so keep it here to WBBJ-TV for the latest updates as this situation continues to evolve. Cooler and comfortable conditions return by Friday into Saturday with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s. It will definitely be a shock to the system after feeling more like late August over the past week and a half. West Tennesee Saturday Eve. Wx. Discussion

8:30 PM CDT SAT SEPT. 27, 2014 It was another wonderful and warm day across much of West Tennessee.High temperatures once again reached into the low to mid 80s under partly cloudy skies. The clouds did quickly increase though over the area with even a few spotty showers across some of our northern counties. The showers have ended but the clouds continue to remain in place thanks to low pressure approaching the area from our south which poses a slight concern for rain tomorrow. For tonight we can expect partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies especially points south which are closer to the low pressure area. Lows will get down into the low to middle 60s with a little patchy fog in those river valley regions. Sunday is when things begin to change with that chance of rain. Not everyone will see rain though nor will it be a washout. The best chances for rain right now still remain south of the I-40 corridor toward the southeast. A shower or two cannot be ruled out to the north but those chances continue to go down as the system looks to track more east. Areas to the north could also see more sunshine allowing temperatures to warm into the low to mid 80s while points south closer to the storms stay in the upper 70s under the clouds. Rainfall amounts will be on the order of .10" to .25" in those areas closer to the storm system. Good news is that everything gets out of here just in time for a warm workweek ahead. Temperatures Monday through Thursday will climb into the mid to upper 80s with increased humidity values. Big time changes arrive by week's end with the arrival of a powerful cold front which looks to drop temperatures into the upper 60s and low 70s by Saturday.
