Idea 3 Development refining idea
One of the things that struck me when I went back to look at this was adaptability as defense/camouflage.
Numerous ways the animal kingdom use defense mechanisms.
Camouflage
Playing dead
Trickery
Physical feature
Chemical features
Warning Calls
Predator Prey/relationships
I’d like to dig further into these aspects as an overarching idea to develop around human behaviour. As a start..
Idea 2 Developing refining idea
Microcosm
The things that sparked most excitement in this idea were
1. Unseen changes
2. World with worlds
1. Thoughts - Pulsing - sonar - thinking this could be an audio project. I like the idea of creating a space - barely lit with sounds that mimic internal body sounds - obviously heartbeat and breath.....but what else.
Tuning forks - Bone is a particularly good conductor of Sound.
2. Thoughts - Right now makes me think rock pools (there could be A LOT of sea/water metaphors!). Like the idea of creating an in internal space. Was looking for Nikki De Saint Phalle...thinking about her massive body installation but saw this instead and makes me think about worlds within worlds in a different way.
Also looked at Performance Painting - working with mark making in different ways to make worlds....painting with feet...toes - detailed...actually this makes me think that this could be incorporated into idea 1 aswell ...as a way of being out of control of the norm...
Also like the idea of creating a tight internal space...3/4 massive sheets of paper and painting within that confined space...making/constricting your own world in which you create. Maybe it is very controlled on the outside - the face for the world and free/expressive more like who we really are without and audience?
Quick drawing idea - ES
Idea 1 Development refining idea.
Imperceptible lead onto restrictions as a way of heightening experience.
Looking at Flotation
Lying in a bath until it is cold - documenting the process.
I’ve been swimming in the sea every day. Every time is completely different from the last.
Dark Retreat - navigating the bardo.
Liminal = situated at a sensory threshold, term has broadened to describe political and cultural change
Usual way of life becomes suspended as a way of experiencing something more intensely or from a different perspective. This totally ties into my experience at the moment of not being at home, having few clothes, very few possessions and not having to be present and correct for an outside world.

Idea 3
Idea 3
Adaptability
Human - crisis, shock, death, birth, livelihood
Issue around Coronavirus people fleeing Dheli.
‘We Will Starve Here’: India’s Poor Flee Cities in Mass Exodus” - hundreds of thousands of India’s poorest are slowly making a desperate journey on foot back to their villages in a mass exodus unseen since the days immediately after India’s independence in 1947.
Different countries, different experiences around the need to adapt to the virus. Some people walk 150 miles to return home as they know they will starve in the city. Different peoples tolerance and ability/desire to adapt to constant change, unknowing.
Nature - changes to adapt to new circumstances - climate, man made issues.
Loss of species and habitat.
Defense and camouflage.
Octopus changing colour to mimic environment
TO DO
Read more about Octopus and adaptability and other equivalents.
Look into human cases of adaptability

Idea 2
Idea 2
Microscopic
Change as the only constant
Renewal of body - most cells are dying and replacing themselves constantly.
Cellular - There are between 50 and 75 trillion cells in the body.... Each type of cell has its own life span, and when a human dies it may take hours or days before all the cells in the body die.
Photos of cells
This is Unseen change - invisible to naked eye.
Activity that we have to work to see - beneath a layer/skin - under the sea - just out of sight - hazy/foggy - behind curtains/gauze
How enormous was the invention of the microscope - made visible worlds within worlds - really like this concept.
Magnifiers used to burn - burning glasses. Interested in exploring this by actually using a magnifying lens. Thinking paper changing to ash...could either use the burn or use the ash in some way?
Fresnel Lens - allowing the light from a lighthouse equipped with one to be visible over greater distances.
Trivia - They were named lenses because they are shaped like the seeds of a lentil.
TO DO
Experiment with magnifying glass to see what effects I can make from burning.
Research body and cell regeneration - ideas around this?
Look at the idea of worlds within worlds…..thinking about visual imagery

Idea 1
REMINDER _ EXPLORATION like Jasper Johns
Idea 1
Imperceptible = Impossible or difficult to perceive by the mind or senses. So subtle, slight, or gradual as to be barely perceptible.
Gradual
Inaudible
Invisible
Time passing is a universal, shared, human experience, and a subtle and gradual process. - Dickenson
Almost Touched
Touched Lightly
Sensitive - sensitising
Softness - passing of time
Wrapped in - silken/delicate
Breath on skin - Makes me think restrictions which heighten senses (smell, taste, hearing, sight, touch) - Retreating
Woken up through the senses
The importance of touch - old people, babies nurture (imperceptible change through nurturing touch.
Makes me think about the big things in life that matter
Death
Grief
Birth
Touch
Companionship
Love/respect/integrity
Aging
Being Present
Abstract concepts like Grace, Grief and Quietness
“Abstract concept = an idea that people can understand but has no physical form (cannot be directly confirmed with the senses).
The ability to identify, understand and communicate abstract concepts is a foundational element of human intelligence”.
Arena we might notice imperceptible change.
Gardens
Body - wrinkles, healing tissue
Babies
Learning - integrating new information
Change is happening in every moment of every day. There are definite moments when we become aware that change has happened (end of flowers bloom) that we weren't aware of in the moment. Not wired to notice subtle change.
7 basic concepts of art
Line, space, shape, form, texture and colour - this has come up and thinking about restricting art making around 1 basic concept ie LINE - as a way of exploring this idea.
Line = 2d or 3d
Quality of line - wire sculpture - moving round a sculpture that has lots of open space - changing the view each step….what surrounds the space?
John - mark takes precedence over the image? - look into more
“this continuous band can emit powerful emotions’.
Pablo Picasso. Portrait of Igor Stravinsky. 1920.
Continuous line drawing - imperfections
In geometry a line
is straight (no bends),
has no thickness, and
extends in both directions without end (infinitely).
The absence of the endpoints is often hinted to by drawing arrows.
Change as the only constant...absence of any endpoint
Butoh
About
Control of body, constant change and searching. Going deeper.
For the general audience, it appears as a type of dance or silent theater which displays extreme visual images created by skinny, white painted dancers.
Though, butoh aesthetics are much wider and its practice is more than just a new choreographic and visual trend, discovered and developed by the Japanese modern artists.

TO DO
Something in this I am interested in but need to do more general research around becoming aware of change, how could you set up the conditions to become aware of change?
Restrictions
Slow
Sense deprivation
John - mark takes precedence over the image? - look into more
Line drawing general research and do some continuous line drawings - element of being out of control. Also 2D and 3D line...research more - wire sculptures.
Interesting to look at and explore and any other art form with such expressiveness.
Research restrictions more in various forms.
Think more about touch.
Mind Map
Theme continuing on from Folio 2 is “change is the only constant”. Initial general mindmap , which then developed on to making choices about 3 themes.
Imperceptable
Microcosm
Adaptability.
I then went on the brainstorm around each of these themes.
