Top 10 Ways to Annoy a Custodian
Working at the happiest place on earth is one of the best things I have ever experienced. I've laughed, I've cried. I've smelled really bad. So I have decided to put my Disney knowledge to good use and create the most whiny list that has every existed! So, without further ado, Top 10 Ways to Annoy a Custodian!
#10: Eat popcorn like a fool.
I get it. Popcorn is a rare delicacy that most people have never eaten before. So it makes sense that when people get a box they are beside themselves with confusion at this strange puffed wonder.
I know that's not true! But it's what I have to tell myself to justify the ungodly amount of popcorn I shove into my dustpan everyday. I mean, c'mon! I sweep up more popcorn than Disney World makes.
#9: "Forget" to wash your hands.
When we work in the bathrooms, we get a lot of flack about how wet the sinks are. When people finish washing their hands they normally shake them all over the counters before going over and getting the paper towels making for a very wet counter top. I always feels really bad that women can't put their purses up on the sinks because they are so wet.
But I would rather LICK that water off the counter tops than see a woman walk out of the bathroom without washing her hands! I mean, my job is disgusting enough without a bunch of nasties walking around spreading their unwashed hand germs. Buh.
#8: Personally hand me your trash.
I walk around everywhere I go with a pan and broom. Some call me the human trashcan. But I cannot stress enough that when i'm walking, I am solely responsible for the trash that is ON THE GROUND. Just because i'm sweeping up trash (probably popcorn) doesn't mean you can walk up to me and hand me your lunch tray and expect me to throw it away! I ain't cho mama.
I kid you not when I say this. Standing at any given point at Walt Disney World there are at least 7 trashcans in your line of vision. I promise. There's one on the way to your next destination.
#7: Complain to us about things we have no control over.
"Hi." "Hello!" "Howdy-do?"
The previous are all proper ways to begin a conversation with a Custodial Cast Member. So forgive us if when you walk up and say, "Umm... Have you tasted the water fountain. It's absolutely disgusting." we aren't pumped with pixie dust to talk to you.
Now don't get me wrong. I appreciate your input and I will do my best to relay the information to the right source (water fountain inc.?) But to expect me to be able to do anything about a rude waiter, or a long line is just silly! Get real. I'm just a custodian. ;)
#6: Eat orange things.
As we discussed earlier, if something is eaten in Magic Kingdom park, it can be stomped into the ground buy guests. Now, it's less annoying when someone drops a graham cracker on the ground because it's brown and most of the ground is cobblestone/brown/brick/easytoblendinto.
And, as you can imagine, none of the streets of Walt Disney World are Nacho Cheese Dorito colored.
So when a child (or a child-minded grown adult) drops a whole pack of goldfish on the street, it sticks out like a traffic cone! Please eat responsibly.
#5: Skip over us with questions.
As you may know, Custodians are no the most worshiped of Cast Members. In fact, man people don't notice us until they drop a carton of popcorn and want us to clean it up and get them a new one. (Did I mention I hate popcorn?)
Because of this reason there have been very rare occasions that I have had guests walk by me to a merchandise or restaurant employee to ask a question about directions. This is what we in the biz call RUDE! And let me tell you why.
While we may as a whole work with trash and do the job most people wouldn't do (some would call us HEROES) we know that park more than we know our own homes! We roam those streets everyday for 8 hours a day and to think that a Restaurant cast member who is only allowed to stand in that one spot in Tomorrowland all day will know where you need to be better than us is preposterous. We got chew.
#4: Pretend to gag at the sight of water on the toilet seat.
Good gracious, people! I'm just going to be blunt here.
"Number 1" is yellow. Water is clear. When you see clear liquid on a toilet seat, IT'S WATER FROM FLUSHING.
And as a custodian, one of my main jobs is keeping pee off of the toilet seat. And you coming into a bathroom stall and dramatically gagging at the sight of water on the toilet seat is really harshing my mellow.
#3: Throw trash into an empty can.
Now stick with me. I'm not being a total jerk and telling you not to throw away your trash in a can I have just emptied. Let me explain:
At Disney we have two componets to a trash can. The outer shell called "the can" and the inner (actual can) part called "the liner."
I know. It took me like 2 weeks to keep that straight.
The Can (outer shell) is a decorative part that changes with the theme of every "land". So when changing the trash we completely pull the liner out of the can and replace it with a new liner.
Can= Outer shell / Liner= Inner shell
Somehow in the 3.4 seconds it takes me to change the full liner to the empty one, guests manage to shove dey nasty trash into the empty trash can. Which mean I have to get on my hands and knees and pull their trash out of the can before I can put the liner back in. Goodness GRACIOUS that's irritating! And hard to explain. Oh well, if you're ever a custodian, you'll get me. ;)
#2: Let your children run free.
Too many times I see kids running around and I think... Where the heck are your parents. Like seriously, you're about 4 years old and you're running around with a plastic sword and and an iPhone 5. Did your parents just give you the master card and tell you to go have fun?
And parents come up to me all the time looking for their kids acting so shocked that something like this could ever happen to them! Nah-dip you gave your 6 your old an iced coffee and asked him to watch your purse while you use the bathroom. No wonder he wandered off!
And..... last but not least
#1: Act like we don't exist.
I gotta get serious for this one. All jokes aside this is one of the most disheartening things any guest could ever do to a custodian. I cannot count the number of times I have had a guest completely ignore my existence just because I do a job that they think is not important enough. When in reality, I do the most important job at Disney. I keep it clean. I keep it safe. I keep it magical. And for every guest that refuses my help, there are 5 more out there who I get to shock when I know exactly what restaurant thy're looking for. Or where they can buy that sweatshirt. Or how to stop their child from crying. Or successfully recommend the next ride of the day. We create magic.
So the next time you see a custodian, you don't have to tell him thank you. You don't have to tell him you appreciate all he does. Just say hello. One of us may just surprise you.
A few weeks ago, I had something very rare and very special happen to me. I received a guest letter. This means that the guest was so touched by something that a cast member did for them that they took the time to not only remember their name, but actually write into this company for what good they had done.
My situation was seemingly routine, but you never know how much such a small gesture can mean.
I was cleaning bathrooms one night, traffic was starting to slow down so I began closing the restrooms out. A mother and her daughter came in and, after a while, I noticed they had been in a stall for quite some time. I really needed to check that stall for toilet tissue an toilet seat covers so I knocked on the stall and asked if they needed any help. A very distraught mother popped out and said, “I think we cleaned most of it up.”
Never good words for a custodian to hear.
The mother then went on to tell me that the child had quite the accident in her pants and that her husband was about to leave to go to the resort to get her a new pair. I assessed the situation and remembered that we were able to provide a service that has a “No strings attached” policy. I would be able to go get the child some new pants free of charge and they would be able to go about their night. The mother could not have been happier! When I arrived back to the bathroom with the pants she hugged me and her husband screamed, “You are a life-saver!” I didn’t think any thing of it. No Strings Attached forms happen all the time and you think Disney’s really sweatin’ one pair of pants? But a few weeks later I received this letter along with a long note from the mother about the impact I had made on their trip. I was just an employee that God put at the right place at the right time, but to them I was a Cast Member who cared enough about that little girl to make sure she got every dose of Magic a Princess deserves.
THIS is why working for Walt Disney World is worth it. We create happiness in the most stinky of situations and opportunities out of accidents.
Disney has a special system to things called "The 4 Keys." These 4 key terms are what makes the Disney company operate with such astounding success. Well the keys, and the fact that I work here. ;) These keys are: Safety, Courtesy, Show, and Efficiency. Now the order of these keys is very important. See safety ALWAYS comes first. See a kid walking on a rail? BOOM. Ask them to get down. See a 4 year old driving a motorized wheelchair? BAM. Tell them you gotta be 16 to drive. (I'm pretty sure this is more for lawsuits but it's sweet for Disney to care.) Courtesy comes next. Because while our guests may not always be right, they are always our guests. Show is third because Sweet Jesus if you break the show then you hate children and happiness and Disney all together. And last but not least efficiency. Because "Disney needs to make money and be a successful business blah blah blah." So lets do some examples: Say a person dressed in a Tomorrowland costume sees a boy trip and fall over in Fantasyland. Can he go over and help? Of course! Because safety comes first! Now let's say a Hot Dog cart in Frontierland needs some more buns and someone in the Circus is going to bring them some. EHH. Wrong. Because the show key comes before efficiency. Now lets get to the picture. When someone does something that exemplifies one of the 4 keys they get a card and entered into win a drawing or something. This, my friends, is my first 4 Keys Card! There was a fellow yelling and pushing his girlfriend and I reported it as a safety concern! #girlpower So there you have it. The 4 Keys to success (and possibly free movie tickets). Defy them if you dare....
Creating intentional magical moments. Things that we take time out of our day to do that create magic for our guests. That's what being a Disney employee is all about. These moments are the only thing keeping my head attached to the rest of me while I dump trash all day. While walking down the street I noticed an unusually large amount of leaves. Well, I had nothing to do at the moment, so I made a Mickey. You would not believe the reactions I got! People LOVED it. They were taking pictures with it, looking around for who made it, and telling me how special it was to them. I had no idea such a small part of my day would affect people in such a big way. I felt so honored. Then I got to thinking... If a child has her picture taken with this Mickey, she's eventually going to grow up and find the picture. Then she will put it on her Facebook for a throwback Thursday (tbt). Then she'll love it so much that she'll make it her profile picture and I made that! I made someone's profile picture! I bet Cinderella never gets to make leaf Mickeys for a profile picture... So that's me. Erin: Leaf Mickey Extraordinaire. Available for all your foliage needs. :)
My job is trashy.
Well, I've offically started working at the Magic Kingdom. Never in a million years would I have imagined that I would be a custodian. I mean... eww. And some days it's really bad and disgusting and I can't eat lunch because I'm so disgusted with myself. And other times I feel like the most important cog in the Walt Disney World machine. Let me walk you through a typical day as a custodian in the Magic Kingdom:
As a custodian, we can have one of two roles depending on the day. You can have restrooms or streets. Well my first expierence with streets was... let's say far from Magical. Let me start whith this. Magic Kingdom uses a whimisical device of magic and wonder called the AVAC system. This is a mystical hole in the ground where all the trash is dumbed and the vacumed through some tunnels all the way to Frontier Land. Magically. This device was created so that custodians could go into the park and transfer trash from one can to the other "onstage" without all the guests seeing you carry around abags of trash.
While guests avoid seeing bags, the bad thing is, they do get to see me physically dumping trash from one can to the other with "trash juice" and all that nastiness going everywhere. It's a good thought but in my opinion, trash bags are so much more simple and just plain cleaner.
So... with streets, you have two jobs. You have to do trash runs and you "pan and broom" the streets (aka: talk to guests). Well for the average cast member, trash runs take about 20 mins and you have to do one ever 2 hours. All the rest of your time you can spend time on the streets with the guests. Well, I am no normal cast member. I am new and obviously don't know what I'm doing. So for 8 of my 8 hours I was doing trash runs. Dumping trash from one can to the other, taking it backstage, dumping it in the AVAC, then coming back out and doing the same thing over. And over. And over.
And the guests know how disguisting it is. No one wants to talk to me when I'm covered in trash juice and smell like a garbage compactor that someone left overnight. And that's the worst part. 8 Hours of no one to talk to but myself. It was awful and my zone got extended so I ended up having twice as many trash cans with half the time/knowledge of how to do them. It. Was. Terrible.
Now restrooms on the other hand... I LOVED the restrooms. At Magic Kingdom you are assigned to one restroom that has about 30 stalls. There is a closet with all your supplies and nothing but BAGS of trash. No dumping. No AVAC. Your job for 8 hours is to keep that bathroom as spotless as possible and that is a feat I can accomplish. Plus I get to squeegee the sinks and that is one of my favorite things in life. So, for any reason that you would need to go into the closet (trash bags, new gloves, toilet seat covers, etc.) you could stay in there 5 mins just relaxing and gathering your thoughts. It is totally calm and just... I love it. I would do restrooms everyday if they would let me.
Well, that is the day in the life of a Magic Kingdom custodian. Hopefully my expierences with streets will get better and my time with the restroms will stay just as awesome as they have been! Disney is honestly and truly nothing short of magical. I know i'll miss it when I'm gone so I'm going to enjoy it while I can! (Free Admission- Whoop Whoop!) I miss everyone at home greatly and I'm still holding out for visits from all of you! And packages... I would take those too.

Finally Here!
So... We're finally here! I can't believe how blessed I am. We arrived here with much stress (on my part). I was so incredibly nervous about getting the right room in the right building with the right girls and God showed me this verse in my devotion.
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Mark 11:24
And thank the LORD for this because He knows I needed it! Well, as you can probably guess, we got EXACTLY what we wanted. I could not love my roomates more. We get along so well and we are already like a very small, wierd, family. We had our first roomie dinner tonight and thankfully I only had to set the table. I sure ain't no culinary student. But it was great! In other news, we went grocery shopping and I hate the real world.
Driving in Orlando, as stressful as it is, is actually pretty fun! Like an enjoyable obsticle course. I'm sure that's just what you wanted to read. Right, mom?)
Our orientation starts thursday and I am extremely excited/nervous! I'm thinking... how hard could Custodial Training be? But it could be very hard! When you think about Disney World one of the things you think of is CLEAN. No pressure. Thankfully I working at Magic Kingdom and have the opportunity to create magic for princes and princesses every day. Well, that's all for now. All I have to say is... God is good! Have a magical day. :)
Well, weeks have flown by and the number on my countdown has swiftly changed into double digits. I can’t believe how quickly this Spring is approaching! Some big things have happened since the last time I posted. Two of my very best friends have gotten accepted into the program which makes the whole thing about 1,000,000 times more exciting! I’m so blessed I can share this with my friends. I absolutely LOVE planning everything with them and even better, we have found a roommate! Funny story. Here goes: My friend pointed out a girl we thought would be compatible with us on the DCP Facebook page and so I messaged her and figured it was worth a shot! Well, upon further review I came to find out we had a mutual friend. Someone she goes to UGA with and is in a Christian Sorority with. Crazy right? Of alllll the people all across the country who got in, we found someone with a mutual friend. BUT WAIT. THERE’S MORE. She messaged me on Facebook a few days later and asked “Do you have an Aunt Carmella who lives in Macon?” To which I replied “Are you, like, stalking me or something?” Jk. I said “Yes! Why?” And she then came to tell me they were neighbors. Now THAT is crazy! Funny how God works right? Well, that’s all for now. Please enjoy the attached photo of our chain link countdown. 83 days, BTdubbs.
2 weeks! I'm ridiculously excited for these next four months and 4 days of my life. I cannot wait for all that I will experience! Since I last posted we have found a 4th and final roommate! She is from Maryland and, as far as Facebook chat goes, she seems super nice! I can't wait for the roller coaster that is moving into a new apartment. In the next two weeks I have to find towels, wash cloths, comforter sets, wall decorations, License renewal, car checkup, and my sanity. Wish me luck with the last one. I know I will be homesick within the first week I'm there. I mean, who will I have to wash my dishes? (Mom) Fill our house with music? (Dad) Make sure I'm reasonably groomed before I leave the house? (Millie) Well the good news is that each of my family members are just a FaceTime away! Only 2 weeks stand between me and the Happiest Place on Earth™!
I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse. -Walt Disney
Acceptance
Whodathunkit? Walt Disney World Employee? Cast member?
The idea first popped into my head when I when to Disney World the first time. I knew this was a place I wanted to work. I mean, seriously this place is a peppy person's dream. Peple smiling and singing ALL THE TIME. Those of you that know me know that I was born for this place. Well, I was scanning the internet for a summer job a Disney... nothing. They have something called Advantage Program but that's a whole sememter AND a summer and while I know I will love the happiest place on earth, my parents probably wouldnt have it. So, I applied for the College Program, which I feel like people think this was an easy process. It most certainly was not. Those 3 weeks we're without a doubt the toughest 3 weeks of my life. I mean I was stressing. Which I'm glad they were because in those weeks I became closer to God than I had been in a loooong time. And I'm pretty sure he did that on purpose. Not that I mind. I have never been so shaken up with happiness as I was the day I got that acceptance email and I know that the DCP will continue to be one of the happiest times of my life. So this begins the countdown. 106 days and counting!
