What this government is doing to public education is obvious and cruel, and not enough people care to notice

So after gutting the funding of public education, the UCP is now blaming the school boards for layoffs. It’s part of their playbook to undermine and eventually push to privatize the public school system.
I’ve spoken to some family members about our concerns, and most don’t seem to be nearly as worried as I am. I don’t…

Wait... how do I do that?
Wait… how do I do that?
I do my best to avoid complaining. Almost everyone hates it, and the person complaining gets all kinds of flack for whining about stuff that they really ought to have a better handle of. Having grown up in a culture of “it’s up to you to succeed”, it’s hard to complain, even if it’s not your fault. We live in a culture that rewards cheating, but punishes complaining. It’s fucked up.
But that’s…

I’ve decided to stop using the word “offended” to describe when someone is upset, and I’ve found it to be incredibly useful in making me more empathetic.
Whenever controversial subjects come up or when politically polarizing issues arise, there doesn’t ever seem to be much sympathy whenever the language of “taking offense” is used. It’s only ever used as a way to deflect from the specifics of the…

State of Deam Address – February 2017 Edition
Hi friends! Haven’t put my thoughts down in a while, so here we go. The state of me is pretty good. Social Life Since my last update in July I’ve settled into what I feel is a fairly decent social loop – I have a handful of friends, keep a healthy distance from them on social media sites to avoid misunderstanding and toxicity, and generally use the internet as a way to suppliment my interest when…

State of Dean Address - July 2017 AKA RIP my comments section
State of Dean Address – July 2017 AKA RIP my comments section
Like a true Canadian should, I begin this post with an apology. Back in January, I lamented about a personal lack of community, and I’ve come to realize that despite my best efforts to be charitable and find areas of agreement between friends whose community values often clash, I’ve come to only serve as a tiny insignificant platform for these conflicts to wage war. There’s a number of things I’d…

Till the Summer Came
Till the Summer Came
This record is the thing of which I’m most proud. While it’s ultimately hypocritical to brag about one’s humility, I do think there is grey line between humility and arrogance. I’ve always done my best to try and straddle that line leaning more towards humility, and as a musician, that attitude guarantees death. Entertainers need to be confidence, even arrogant, to get people to want to pay them…

Safety is bad and you should feel bad about wanting it. What?
To anyone that thinks that “safe spaces” are just intellectual echo chambers that reinforce victimhood culture and are designed to protect weak people from getting their feelings hurt and that society needs to suck it up and be more thick skinned – can you do me a favour and just fuck off? You don’t know what you’re talking about. Reading a lot of social media posts today from trans people in…

This emergency debate is a waste
This emergency debate is a waste
So the Liberal government is using up its time at the emergency debate (re: refugee situation in the US) to give speeches about how great they are. No specifics, no effort to address the shortcomings of their policies. Trudeau didn’t show up either. I guess he thought tweeting was enough. I hoped to see some meaningful followup to his viral tweet, but this is pretty fuckin’ weak. Wrzesnewskyj…

The State of Dean Address - January 2017
The State of Dean Address – January 2017
This is a blog post from an undereducated white dude from Canada. My perspective is tainted by every privilege that my biography implies, so take it with a grain of salt, and perhaps with an open mind. Following the election of Donald Trump in the USA, a great number of lines have been drawn. On social media in particular, more people have been unfriended in the past few months than I’ve ever…

Watch: Steve then sees who the guy was sitting with and points out how truly f***ed up his comment was.
Hey I like this guy. I didn’t know he was the comedian everyone was talking about. Good for him.
the rest of the clip is great
in case you cannot click on it, he asks if the people sitting at the table with this asshole are there with him, and realizes that at least one of the people there is the guy’s daughter
and he makes a point of saying how gross it is, that this man can sit there in front of his daughter, and when he (the comedian) is standing up for women’s rights, this guy (asshole) is trying to shut him up.
awesome
I hope I never have to emulate this example, but if the opportunity comes up at a show, I absolutely will. The community I wish to involve myself in has no place for such behavior. I applause Steve for not just calling out the BS, but also in remaining funny while doing it. Good stuff.
It’s important to cherish the time you take for granted.
I’m not being ironic. The luxury of being able to take your time for granted is one that very few people on this planet have. There’s a constant pressure under millennials in the developed world to always be on the go, never taking your time for granted and living life to its fullest.
I think perhaps this constant desire for productivity is a kind of artificial work ethics, something we do to convince ourselves that what we do MUST be important, and any time wasted is time we should be spending on making ourselves as important as we think we are. We feel guilty if we spend more than one evening in a row watching Netflix, drinking, and chilling out. Why? Because it’s a privilege not everyone has? Probably. But you don’t eradicate privilege by feeling guilty and deciding to suffer by choice. The only way to eradicate privilege is to break down societal barriers, empower women, eradicate poverty and create a just and peaceful world. Which is mostly impossible. So we feel guilty and work too hard for our own good.
