Welcome to Escapecore
Hullo, this is the blog for the aesthetic I made up. There was this really specific feeling I got from certain art, music, or pieces of fiction that didn’t feel like it fit any other pre-existing aesthetic so I just decided to coin a new one.

Escapecore: A Guide
Update on this:
I coined this aesthetic back when I was in a religious environment, hence why I didn’t want anyone connecting Escapecore to anything occult related.
I am out of that religion now and I’m taking that back. People can associate Escapecore with things like the occult, witchcraft, and the astral plane if they want. There is nothing wrong with those things, I was just in a bad place back when I first wrote this (considering a lot has changed in general for me since then, I might make a new updated version of this slideshow entirely).

Subgenres: Dark Escapecore
Examples: Coraline, Madoka Magica, OMORI, Yume Nikki, End Roll
In Dark Escapecore, all is not well. The dream world may look friendly and inviting on the surface, but contains dark secrets or horrific ulterior motives.
Dark Escapecore media is generally a mix between fantasy and horror, and may lean on being more unsettling than other forms of Escapecore, though the idea is that such things remain hidden at first.
This subgenre may be more closely related to aesthetics like Weirdcore more than other versions of Escapecore are.
Common traits of Dark Escapecore
- Characters explore nightmares instead of dreams (ex. OMORI, End Roll, Yume Nikki)
- What the character is escaping from (trauma, guilt, etc.) eventually bubbles to the surface in a bad way (ex. OMORI, End Roll)
- The fantasy world starts out seeming nice, but gradually “decomposes” as characters realize something is wrong (ex. Coraline, OMORI, End Roll)
-The fantasy world is actually a trap, or has a dangerous catch (ex. Coraline, Madoka Magica)
- The fantasy world puts the characters in real danger (ex. Coraline, Madoka Magica)

Escapism Academia: the intense yearning to escape into a fantasy world that translates into an obsessive consumption of any type of media that fits the fantasy world you wish you could escape into, signing up for classes and hobbies to obtain skills that fit into this fantasy so you feel like you’re one step closer to escaping this reality, casually dressing as a character from that fantasy world, creating entire spotify playlists to be your “soundtrack” in that world, etc.
