And before we’ve even got our bearings of which way we’re headed, a blur comes thundering out from between two leaning barn doors with the momentum of a torpedo. One moment, Blaine is standing beside me in the gravel lot, with his camera strap across his chest, his black curls still slightly damp from our motel shower… Mmmm… I try not to get lost in thoughts of that, the morning light catching gold in his hazel eyes, and the next? He’s laughing and staggering backward as a massive brown-and-white dog presses his entire head into Blaine’s stomach as if greeting an old friend.

Interstice

Blaine watches Kurt sleep. The longer they're here, the more the elevator shrinks around them, as if they've been buried together. Time is meaningless.

Kurt stirs. His eyes stay shut, but his voice comes, sleep roughened. "At Scandals..."

Blaine listens.

"I planned to apologize to you. For everything, but—" Kurt's throat spasms.

"I didn't give you a chance." A simple factual statement.

"No."

"I wouldn't have believed you then."

"And now?"

"Maybe? I guess I owe you one too."

Fragile hope strains Kurt's voice: "Maybe we can forgive each other?"

Blaine sighs. "It doesn't work that way, Kurt."

"Why not?"

Fragile

Blaine with Karofsky in the truck bed haunts Kurt's dreams all night.

By morning's light, he sits wearily with coffee and toast. Centered on the table rests a straight-sided, flat-bottomed glass bowl holding summer's last plums. The bowl, a thank you for Carole, was Sam's first glassblowing success.

Sam'd talked about his numerous failures while learning to be gentle, patient with flame and gravity while creating something durable. Kurt touches the subtle imperfections warping the bowl's simple shining beauty.

Two years ago Kurt, with Blaine, baked a plum cake. The edges burned.

Alone, Kurt will make the plum cake again.
