“We can go home if you’re uncomfortable?”
“No, no, I’ve got to try…"

“If Carlisle was the soul of our family, then Esme was the heart. He gave us a leader who deserved following; she made that following into an act of love.” — Midnight Sun, Chapter 4: Visions
Fic prompt: Charlie finding out a weird fact about Carlisle/Esme (maybe how old they are/how long they have been married...)
It had been...a long day.
Charle sat outside on the Cullens’ back porch, a beer in his hand as he watched his daughter walk hand in hand with her little family back to their cottage.
“Am I— do other humans know about you guys?”
“Some.” Carlisle admitted. “No one around here but there are humans scattered around that are aware of our kind.”
Charlie let out a breath. “Well, I guess all those rumors going around town about your family being weird were right.”
Esme couldn’t help but laugh softly, leaning into Carlisle’s side. “We get those everywhere we go.”
“It wasn’t so bad when it was just Esme, Edward, and I.” Carlisle explained. “But as our family has grown and become more...chaotic.”
“That’s generous.” Esme teased. “They’re all adults but mentally our children are still so very young. And reckless.”
“And stupid.” Charlie added, causing both vampires to laugh.
“They don’t always have the best judgment, no.” She agreed. “But we try our best.”
Charlie took a sip of his beer, taking in scenery around them before looking at the vampires. “So, how did you two become the parents?”
The doctor let out a breath. “We’re the oldest.”
“The oldest in age or in...years?” He asked, fumbling a little. It was a difficult question to word, after all.
“Carlisle’s been alive the longest but I’m technically the oldest.” Esme told him. “I’m 26.”
“And I’m 23.”
“How long have you two been 23 and 26?”
The vampire couple shared a look before answering him. “Esme was born in 1895 and I was born in the 1630’s.”
Charlie nearly choked on his beer. “1630’s?!”
Esme offered him a smile. It all made sense now, her old-timey look and Carlisle’s seemingly archaic mannerisms. “Yes, Carlisle’s a very old man.”
“Oh, hush.” The doctor said, pressing a kiss to his wife’s temple. “You’re quite old yourself now.”
Charlie couldn’t help but feel the warmth radiating off of them. They didn’t seem like vampires, like anything but human. The two of them seemed like newlyweds while somehow also holding onto this sense of having spent years together.
“How long have you two been married? Did you have a whole...Bells and Edward situation.”
Carlisle shook his head. “No, their story is quite unique. Most people don’t know of our kind until they’ve become one.”
“I was human when I met Carlisle the first time.” Esme explained. “But it was another ten years before I became a vampire. I had no idea what he was.”
“Were you together?”
“No, Esme was a patient of mine. I moved away and then...”
“Fate brought us both to the same city years later. Carlisle found me...I was nearly dead but he saved my life.”
Charlie paused— he couldn’t picture the vibrant vampire as anything but exactly who she was. He couldn’t imagine her on the brink of death, couldn’t imagine the seemingly happy man in front of him finding her in such a way. “Dead at 26?”
Carlisle started to speak up but Esme cut him off. He tried to protect her from her story when she was asked but the vampire had moved beyond being ashamed of what had led to her death. “I’d jumped from a cliff. My son had died and the grief was too much for me.”
“Oh,” Charlie breathed. “I’m sorry.”
“Thank you, Charlie.” Her voice was soft. “Carlisle bit me and I moved in with him and Edward. It was tough at first but they both helped me grieve and heal.”
“So, Edward is older than you?”
“He’s been a vampire longer but I’m older.”
“That’s...weird.”
Carlisle laughed. “Yes, it is. Everything about this family is weird.”

A thousand different possibilities ran through my mind in an instant - a thousand different ways to touch her. The tip of my finger tracing the shape of her lips. My palm cupping under her chin. Pulling the clip from her hair and letting it spill out across my hand. My arms winding around her waist, holding her against the length of my body. - Edward, Midnight Sun.
