esme’s life before being turned into a vampire was bleak, to say the least. there were certainly moments of joy, especially in esme’s childhood and teenage years, when she was free to roam and create a little bit of chaos for her parents. she was the child up in the trees, swinging her legs like nature had made her a playground for her own personal use. she read voraciously, a treat not all of the girls in her neighborhood were afforded, and loved getting lost in the pages of classic adventure novels. she met carlisle cullen because of her wild nature, the only doctor in travelling distance who could mend her broken leg when she was all of sixteen. in all of one day’s acquaintanceship with him, she decided that his kindness and the way he treated her would be the basis of how she wanted to be treated. she carried that with her for the rest of her life. she dreamed of sharing her love of reading and learning with the world and worked hard to become a schoolteacher, but when she was in her early twenties, that joy faded quickly.
her family’s money, or lack thereof, never concerned esme in the slightest until it all fell on her shoulders. while she was content with the life of a simple farm girl, her parents were struggling to keep that farm and a roof over their heads. they arranged a marriage between esme and a local man that the townsfolk seemed to love, and that was supposed to be that. esme had waited as long as she possibly could to marry, years longer than any of her friends had, but it seemed like fate. that was, until her husband’s true colors began to show and she realized that she had been given a death sentence, rather than a husband. like she always had, she attempted to make the best of her circumstances and continue to enjoy life, but it was clear after some time that that spark was gone. no longer allowed to do the things she loved, her wild nature was subdued into an obedience that kept her alive, though barely. she kept her depression under wraps, knowing that the doctors in her town weren’t nearly as kindly as doctor cullen, but eventually she’d had enough and left her hometown once and for all.
after leaving her home, esme’s life was one lived on the run. it seemed nowhere was safe. just when she thought she could make a living, her husband would hunt her down and she would be right back where she started. even her happiest days, living a lie as a war widow and being able to fulfill her dream of teaching, were shrouded by the fear of what would happen if she was found again. on what she was should would be the worst day of her life, she was once again tracked down by her husband and forced to go back home. she lived every day as a ghost, fearing for her life and hating the days she was present enough to experience. the only joy she felt in that entire period of time was the day she found a baby boy surrendered to the church they attended. when the congregation was asked for help, she took it upon herself to adopt him without hesitation. little did she know just how sick he would become and only a few short weeks in her arms, her son passed away from a respiratory illness; ending the only happiness she had known in years. she was twenty-eight years old by then and the whole world told her that her chances for a new beginning were long gone.
in the worst day of her life, after burying her son, she took her own life to be with him in the thereafter. waking up after what was meant to be a permanent decision had been shocking, terrifying, and excruciating until she opened her eyes and saw the kind eyes she had been dreaming about for almost half of her life. seeing carlisle cullen before her made her think she was in heaven after all. if not for the pain of the transformation, she would've believed it with even more conviction. learning what she'd been turned into was a shock of its own, but there was also peace there; the peace of mind that came from knowing she was finally safe, finally stronger than those who would wish her harm. the man who had been the standard for what it meant to be a good man had saved her and she would never forget it. after all of those attempts at starting her life over, she was finally going to get to start over.
life as a vampire was difficult for esme, but not necessarily in the ways it was for the rest of her new family. control and thirst were something they all struggled with, but esme hated the idea of hurting a human being more than any other vampire she would meet in her travels. she trusted her love of all people seemed to stop her from harming humans, no matter how hungry she became, but even a being made of selfless love such as herself wasn't immune to the nature of a vampire. the times she slipped up and killed someone were some of the most agonizing of her life. even after all she had been through in her human life, knowing she had ended a life that could've been filled with joy was the cruelest hand she could've been dealt. if not for carlisle and edward, she couldn't imagine continuing on after creating such horror. as the years passed and she found better control over her thirst, vampirism became a godsend and truly felt the new beginning carlisle had gifted her.
in her new life, esme was able to explore all of the places and cultures and experiences she had craved as a young girl and eventually young woman. it seemed like anything she desired, she would receive. in return, she gifted her new family with unconditional love, the strongest they had ever received, and a heart that was slipping back into its natural, wild, easy state. esme spread joy with every step she took and she would never take that for granted again. even more than enjoying herself and her new life, she wished she could make the lives of those around her as joyful and prosperous as she felt her own was. finding new children to take under her wing made her the happiest she believed she could possibly be, and every new addition to the cullen family felt like the greatest gift carlisle could give her. what more could someone want from life?
