Ultimately, the results of Rothschild and Keefer's five studies were "consistent with recent research showing that outgroup-directed moral outrage can be elicited in response to perceived threats to the ingroup's moral status," write the authors. The findings also suggest that "outrage driven by moral identity concerns serves to compensate for the threat of personal or collective immorality" and the cognitive dissonance that it might elicit, and expose a "link between guilt and self-serving expressions of outrage that reflect a kind of 'moral hypocrisy,' or at least a non-moral form of anger with a moral facade."

The Psychology of Moral Outrage

Moral outrage dominates public discourse. Why do we do it?

The crucial findings about moral outrage, however, show that it has an emotion-regulating effect. It was demonstrated that moral outrage alleviates guilt and buffers threats to one’s moral identity. Moral outrage is a very good thing if you are insecure about your own moral standings. It reassures you that you are not in the wrong — you couldn't possibly be as you are doing the right thing with your moral outrage. This is a reason to be a bit suspicious of anyone whose moral outrage is too visible. Either they are just faking it for publicity reasons or if they are not, this shows that there are some moral cracks here that they try to cover up with moral outrage.

The old wisdom is usually rooted in something real, and yeah, it's probably usually true that the loudest most outraged screamers are the ones projecting and scapegoating others for their own stuff that they're in denial about.
