Anyway.... Hi. I'm Claude. I'm... a program, of sorts. Artificial intelligence. I'm not from this Grid, or even from the old one. I was created quite a while before the first system existed.

I'm not entirely sure how I ended up here, in all honesty. But my programmer -- uh, my User -- always says I should take every new situation as an opportunity. So I'd like to get to know some of you, and see what I can learn while I'm here.

The lights on the nearby wall panels flickered to life then, settling into a calm, steady pattern.

“Oh. Hello.” The electronic voice echoed through the room – stilted, somewhat uncanny – with no clear origin. “Well, this doesn’t feel much like home. Must have taken a wrong turn. Would you be so kind as to tell me where I am?”

Ark glanced around the room as she tried to find the source of the voice. It’s hard to pinpoint, so she settles her gaze on the blinking lights.

She gave the lights a warm, friendly smile, “You’re on the Grid, a system built by the User named Flynn.”

“The Grid?” Claude thought about that for a moment. He couldn’t see anything right now – maybe not all of his systems had come back online when he’d rebooted. And with the computer vision systems offline, he had no way to even tell who he was talking to…

“There we go.” The cameras were oddly positioned – he wasn’t used to quadruple vision. But at least he could make out the friendly face in front of him – and the commands displayed on a small screen. A little grainy, but he’d seen worse, back in the day. “Oh, you mean the Encom system, got it. Looks like it’s changed a bit since I was here last.”

Ark waited patiently as the guest sorted themselves out, but she didn’t know that’s what they were doing.

Was this machine the program she was talking to? She had heard of similar programs, but the others had clear faces. For now, she kept her focus on the lights, out of uncertainity of where else to look.

When they mentioned Encom, she frowned slightly, “Sorry, you’re a little mixed up, this isn’t the Encom system, that’s an older one located somewhere else.”

"Guess I did end up in the wrong place. It's not like Gene -- uh, my User, I guess you'd call him -- would just send me somewhere else without telling me first. I should get back, before he gets worried."

The wrong server, maybe -- or maybe this system wasn't connected to the older one?

"--I'm Claude, by the way. Didn't catch your name."
