John Singer Sargent, 1856-1925, American. Man Reading, Nicola d’Inverno, 1904-1908, oil on canvas, 25¼ x 22¼ in.

Nicola D’Inverno was a 19-year-old Italian immigrant and amateur boxer who knocked on Sargent’s door seeking work in 1892. He stayed with the artist for 25 years. Hired initially to model, D’Inverno became Sargent's studio manager, valet, and frequent travel companion.

While Sargent never explicitly confirmed his romantic relationships, art historians widely consider D’Inverno one of his muses, primary subjects for private male nudes, and a strong candidate for being one of his lovers. The duo lived in close quarters for decades until 1917, when D'Inverno was dismissed following a bar fight in Boston.

Fusco was an Italian man and local model employed by Sargent, celebrated for his raw, unidealized humanity and a lush corona of hair.

There are notable sexual undercurrents in Koch's paintings. TIME Magazine featured his painting Siesta on the cover of its January 24, 1964 special issue: Sex in the U.S. And there has always been speculation about Koch's sexuality. Editor and critic Leo Lerman (1914–1994), an "out" gay man, a long-time friend of the Koch’s and a subject in several of the paintings, wrote of Koch in his posthumously published journals: "I was astonished to find he was a practicing homosexual. I think Dora knew." But there is no other literature or stories from Koch's many friends and students that corroborate this, and he was happily married, for almost 50 years, to Dora Zaslavsky.
