TIPS FOR STUDYING KOREAN
this post is a result from a message i got asking about if i had any tips about learning korean and being worried about being able to practice. these are some of the things i use to make sure i’m progressing in my korean studies •ᴗ•
1% better everyday — it’s better to learn one new word daily than a hundred new words and then overdo yourself and not study in months. ten new words everyday can average you between 200 ~ 350 words every month. don’t underestimate the power of small daily work.
think in korean — whenever i’m alone, i will try to think to myself in korean. if i’m with my dog i’ll say 앉아 instead of sit, when i go to the supermarket i translate the names of foods as i see them. when i’m writing in my diary or whatever i’m thinking of at that moment, i’ll try to think and write it first in korean.
guess first, then translate — when trying to learn korean, i think it’s far more beneficial if you try to understand what the meaning of a word or phrase is on its own without needing the translation. this is, as far as i’m aware of, how babies learn. if i point to an elderly woman playing with a child, hugging that child and i say “할머니” i think you can figure out by context what the word means. if i yawn and say with a wave “잘 자요” can you guess what i’m trying to say? try to rely, as little as possible, on your own native language when learning a new one so it doesn’t become a crutch. try to read hangul without associating any sound to its english sounding counterpart, because not always will you find an equal. it’s like the arab ع and غ that does not sound at all like “ayn” or “ghayn”, it’s more guttural, very throaty, but if you’re only reading and not listening, you won’t be able to distinguish the sound because it’ll never sound like you think it should sound like. learn as if this were your first language.
keep yourself accountable — because nothing gives you that healthy dopamine hit like seeing how the number of vocab and grammar terms you have go up, up, up! everyday •ᴗ• back when i was studying japanese, i was always so unmotivated that i didn’t even realize how much i actually knew until i went to japan and found i could survive on my limited vocabulary just fine. then the same thing happened with my korean, i was inconsistent and unmotivated until i decided to start keeping track of how much i was actually learning. it may not be a lot but hey, knowing that each week i add around a hundred new words for me feels incredibly motivating and it’s what keeps me studying daily even on my worst days.
keep a notes tab on your phone — let’s be honest, no one is going to carry 24/7 a small notepad and pen, but we’re always glued to our phones. whenever you hear or see a new term, write it down immediately, try to guess first what it means and then check on a dictionary for the translation. this is how i do it.
consume media daily — last but not least, even if you’re not actively studying daily, you’d be surprised at how much you can learn by listening to music, browsing instagram, watching youtube videos or tv-shows. some of my favorites:
music: zico is the one artist i listen to consistently, but i really like korean rnb and hip hop/rap. i don’t know a lot about k-pop if i’m honest, only a couple of bts songs. i also really like zion.t.
tv-shows/drama: i-land, hospital playlist, mr. sunshine, goblin, weightlifting fairy kim bok joo, while you were sleeping, hwarang, bride of the water god, life, one spring night, pretty noona who buys me food and my holo love to name a few.
instagram: la__petit, panhonesta, daily__sweets_, hellol_official, mulkong_chef, _yammycake_, beiny_, yedy101, ko_diva11, s_syeoni, good.to.seeyou, 0ur_hours, _echike, juujuucake, yoo_yeonseok. studying accounts: yoonssam_kr, seoul.er_korean, yourdailydoseof_korean, shichanoppa, koreanwithem
i hope this post is helpful! also, i get so happy hearing from you guys! i know i don’t show a lot of myself here but i swear i don’t bite! i’m always here or on my instagram if anyone wants to chat :)

Korean Youtube Channel Recommendation
One of my favourite Youtube channels for learning Korean is 배우다 꼬레 (Baewooda Corée/Learn Korean). It has grammar lessons, videos on Korean history, pronounciation guides, and lots of other good content. The best thing about it that it’s all in Korean, with Korean subtitles, and spoken slow enough to be understandable even to a beginner. If you want to check it out, you can click on this sentence, it’ll take you to the channel.
