One of my favorite parallels between Essek and Caleb in the animated is Trent telling Essek “you didn’t think we were just going to study together” compared with Caleb asking if he’s going to be joining the Cerberus assembly when Trent is vollstrucker-fying him.

I think it just really shows the base thought process for both of them-a search for knowledge with a complete disregard for what they might be giving up to gain that knowledge, or even what everyone around them has planned for them. Neither thought, oh I should ask more questions about what is going on before I dive head first into this. They saw an opportunity (for Essek, giving the beacon to Trent, for Caleb it goes all the way back to joining the academy) and took it, maybe under the assumption they knew what the end goal was but with no guarantees.

The fact that Essek and Caleb's first show meeting is right in the middle of Trent manipulating Caleb into working with him, so in that moment not only did Trent lose the beacon to Essek but he also lost his chance at getting his hands on Caleb again
