My complete piece for @mononoke-zine from a few years back, I like seeing how my arts improved
I spent a little more time on colouring the sketch than I thought I would <3
WARNINGG: I yap sm so u better hang tight for this
I did a speedrun of being an fan of an anime by accident kinda
So I watched a movie, realized there was an anime made before it, realized the anime was a spinoff of another anime so i had to watch that one too, finished the anime, saw there was a second movie available, and heard there was another movie coming, so now im waiting for the third movie to come into netflix or any pirating website
I really did all this because:
1. Dont want to be called a larper.
2. Need more content.
And then i realized the fandoms mostly inactive. Anyway the animes are "Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales" and "mononoke(2007)" the movies are these in order "Mononoke: the Phantom in the Rain" and "Mononoke: The Ashes of Rage" where a third movie "Mononoke: The Curse of the Serpent" is only available in theatres rn.
Heres the protag
They're different people. The movies use Kon Kusuriuri, but the anime uses Ri Kusuriuri.
Their names are actually unknown, because Kusuriuri means "medicine peddler" in japanese and Ri/Kon is the name of their sword. So the fandom refers to them by sword and occupation.
They also have some other guy called shingi. No differentiation this time by name.
They're the final form or wtv.
The anime is more horror feel, the movies are dramatic flares.
Jugando con las sombras me salió una imagen bastante imponente, la verdad :v
This was funnier in my head Imo
The Medicine Seller of Ri (again)
Here's the full version of the sketch, I kinda mimicked the style the kakegurui manga had because I thought it looked pretty with the realistic shading of the skin then pattern/solid color in the hair & clothes. And because without the skin shading, it looked boring as hell.
I ended up changing the entire composition because i wanted to try something different and apparently I can render skin and clothes but not faces and hair. It's a nightmare.
I'm still making another one though with my usual style and where you can see his face💛

Leftover zine copies will be available at @mononoke-zine!
Mononoke (2007) is a psychological horror anime about the Medicine Seller, who exorcises yokai spirits by learning its Form, Truth, and Reason.

WIP!
I got curious and apparently back in the Edo period in Japan the most attractive and erotic part of the body (especially for women) is the back of the neck- being "a major focal point of Japanese femininity, serving as a subtle, elegant, and sensual point of allure."
I know I didn't need to pull down his clothes to share this information because his design already leans into the more feminine designs of kimonos but I got carried away.

WHEN WILL THE MOVIE RELEASE INTERNATIONALLY 💔💔💔
Does anyone know where I can buy the discs for the mononoke movies? I know the 3rd one is not out yet and i am aware that they are listed on the official website but the issue is that I cannot read japanese 🥲 Not many english sites i've browsed have listings either since its so niche.
I dont NEED all the extra stuff they throw in there either, but it'd be cool. Mostly im looking for a website to stalk so I can get the discs and possibly limit the time I have to wait until netflix gets the streaming rights in fricking OCTOBER ACCORDING TO MY PREDICTIONS. Anyway, if anyone has any recommendations it would be much appreciated!! I keep running into spoilers and quickly scrolling before i see HAHA
so im really bad at remembering to post on BOTH art accounts and not just one
A fanart I made of the medicine seller (series/Ri) because he was beautiful. And because I saw a lot of photos of geisha's on Pinterest and realized how amazing models/references they would be. So here he is💛
In the meantime, while I kick myself for getting the release date wrong, I have more time than I thought to refine my other ideas!
In the first Mononoke Movie and as I've already explained, Kun explains that there are 8 total swords, and a total of 64 guardians who can wield these 8 swords.
These swords are as follows (based off the Trigrams): Qian (Heaven), Dui (Lake), Li (Fire), Zhen (Thunder), Xun (Wind), Kan (Water), Gen (Mountain), and Kun (Earth).
The thing that I'm stuck on is this: there are 64 separate individuals (presumably) who can wield the swords interchangeably. This number comes from the 64 hexagrams, which combine two trigrams to make a new "element."
To illustrate this, lets use the idea that Kun and Li are together in the third movie as I suspect they will be. They have 2 hexagrams their trigrams can make depending on who leads: Li + Kun = Jin (Prospering), and Kun + Li = Mingyi (Hidden Intelligence).
My idea of these 64 guardians is that they're actually just fusions of the 8 kusuriuri which represent the trigrams, and so can wield both swords of their trigrams at one time.
Now I must say, I don't really like this idea. I thought of it mostly because it seems strange to me that there is a backlog of 64 people at a time waiting to wield the blades if they are needed. At the same time, I think this massive backlog makes perfect sense considering how Kun describes the kusuriuri's job and the swords in the first movie:
"This is one of the 8 swords, representing Yin and Yang. A masterpiece formed from the realm of Shuga, entrusted to us 64 guardians."
Now, I have things to say about this Realm of Shuga business, but I'll post about that later.
Notice his use of the word "entrust." It seems to me that the Kusuriuri are not made for these swords, rather that they ascend into their positions, aND..if the sword is ENTRUSTED, that means it can also be taken away, or given to another guardian should the main host be injured. So, my conclusion here is that there is a higher body who governs over the 64 guardians that gives them the swords and their position of Kusuriuri.
Now for my headcanon: i am of the belief that the Kusuriuri are kitsune, as I think a lot of other people are as well. Kitsune begin as otherwise normal foxes of two camps, good and mischievous. Only the good kistune can ascend to achieve a heavenly status, which the Kusuriuri may be among.
My little headcanon is that the Kusuriuri once had lives beyond the swords, but they had to abandon themselves to become vessels for the sword, a-lot like we see the women of the Ooku must do in the first movie. In the same vein, I believe that their souls are embued into the blade (which is why I'm torn on the 64 guardians being individuals or fusions), which gives them their shingi, or the guy that can actually unsheathe the sacred blade. This makes it even more curious to me WHY there's so many guardians? Are ALL of their souls in the blade? Is it possible to be severed from it entirely? What happens if yes? Can the Kusuriuri die?????
These are questions which keep me up at night and will probably never get answered, but I'm content with that! Part of the reason i love the series and the movies so much is that theres SOOOO MUCH ENDLESS MATERIAL and nothing is explained! Or if it is, it only makes me ask MORE QUESTIONS!!!
Anyway, another light conspiracy/headcanon post on the board hell yeah. You are freed from my basement once more
Yeah okay, in doing some scrolling and translating of this instagram post, IM wrong...
Now i am relying on an auto translator here just to say, i unfortunately cannot read japanese, but according to the translation, there are INDEED 64 swords and only 8 special blades!
My idea was based solely on the lines spoken in the series/movies, i dont see a lot of outside interviews or peruse much of the wikis (its fun to work off what I'm given in its most pure form)
Now im even more confused about why theres a whole 64 blades? Why does kun only mention there are 8 and makes a distinction between the swords and the guardians?
I still think its kind of a cool idea that there are people who can use multiple blades because of the interplay of the trigrams but i SUPPOSE having more guys with more blades would mean an easier time doing their jobs.....
