Wind howling and snowflakes having took a bad turn for hail a few hours earlier, the nearest public building had been the only safe option: Bennyâs Burgers. It had been two hours already sitting in the diner with the storm raging on. Still bundled in coats, the mother and child stayed cooped in a booth after having their trip to the police station foiled. The shadow of purple at her side was mesmerized by the happenings outside the window while Lucretia was far more concerned with the people gathered inside - most of which she didnât recognize. Her lips pursed and skin crawling, she found it difficult not to worry about how long the storm would go on. She had to wonder if Mia would ever get the chance to invite the person she had so-wanted to come to Thanksgiving before it was too late. With music still trilling slowly over the speakers, yet more fears dared to show their faces in the midst of the storm. âExcuse me -â Lucretia had uttered, having climbed out of the booth to address a woman that had been standing near the doors; having chosen her by the fact she looked the slightest bit familiar, âI-Iâm sorry. Do you know h-how long theyâre saying the storm will last?â Worries whispered in her ear as her anxiousness revved; thinking that perhaps she should make sure he was safe and leave Mia here while she did, although she was extremely quick in waving the thought aside. Instead, she shot a look outside at the storm, drowning in her attempts to make a safe game plan. âA-are you doing alright?â She added distractedly, âYou could come sit with us if youâd l-like to rest.â
When Estrella had initially taken shelter at Bennyâs, it was only to get out of the howling wind and hail. She had intended to stay until the hail stopped long enough for her to get to her car and drive home. Unfortunately for Estrella, that didnât happen. The hail turned to heavy snow and by now her odds of driving home soon were slim. Yet she still stood at the dinerâs doors, glaring through the glass at the weather that just had to waste her time today.Â
For the first hour and a half, she had been adjusting plans in her head. Moving around the schedule she had set for herself to adjust for the delay. As the minutes ticked by though it became less and less promising. Este wouldnât be able to get everything done that she had expected to. As that fact started to sink in, her awareness of her surroundings grew. She wasnât the only one stuck here, worried and cold.
Hearing Lucretiaâs small âexcuse meâ prompted Este to turn towards her with a curious expression. What could she do for the woman now in front of her? At Luâs question, she smiled softly to herself and shook her head. âSorry, I have no idea. Last I heard it was supposed to clear up by the end of the day and obviously that prediction wasnât right.â The local weather predictions were usually fairly accurate but this seemed to have caught everyone by surprise, even the meteorologists. The weather only seemed to be getting worse as it got later and later in the day.
Estrella could tell Lucretia was distracted when she politely asked how Este was doing. She smiled back equally politely and nodded, âIâm alright.â Us? Este wondered for a moment before realizing Lucretia had her adorable young daughter with her here. âOh, um. Yeah, alright.â Estrella agreed, more so she could make sure the worried woman in front of her was alright than anything else. She had to admit though, after standing by the doors for over an hour sitting down sounded nice. âAre you alright? Howâs your daughter? Does she need anything?â Â
maddiscnarcher:
âI guess you have a point, but Iâm more of a winter kind of gal,â she replied before taking a moment to think. The fact that the town would be more festive during the year, not just for major holidays, was an enticing idea. So she wouldnât mind if the decorations were in any way cheesy. Maddisonâs eyes widens a little, her bottom lip caught between her teeth at the sight of the turkey glasses. âWow, okay yeah, those are pretty bad,â she said with a laugh.
With a wide smile, Este inquired, âReally? Is that your favorite season?â She shook her head softly, âIâm definitely more of a summer on the beach kind of girl.â She couldnât help cracking up at Maddisonâs reaction to the turkey cup idea. âYeah, yeah they are pretty bad.â As Este flipped through the rest of the book she mused, âMaybe someday Iâll be the kind of woman who glues googly eyes to everything and publishes books about it. That sounds like a simple but happy life.âÂ
1800bea:
bea had felt much the same worry when este moved in next door. she seemed to be opposite of everything her family was - messy, chaotic, and wild. little did she know, the two would end up closer than bea had ever been with anyone. sheâd confided in este just about everything that had happened in her life, from her parents to school in chicago, and beatriceâs trust was not an easy thing to gain.Â
having someone who understood the responsibility and pressure she was dealing with certainly had its upsides, whether it led to a mess of feelings or splitting a bottle of wine on the kitchen floor at two am, sometimes both. and her kids - her siblings, rather - loved este. they confided in her and looked to her for help, and for that bea was grateful. very few people were willing to put up with her, let alone the kids that came with her. they complimented each other, balancing out each otherâs wild and practical sides. it was a perfect fit.Â
âorange juice?â her eyes widened in bewilderment. âyou gave me a heart attackâŠfor orange juice?â she inhaled deeply, trying to look serious, but burst into another fit of laughter. âi probably wouldâa done the same thing, itâs fine.â she set the bat down on the counter and held her hand out for the jug. âyou wanna mix it? i think iâve got some vodka around here somewhere.â
Estrella just smiled sheepishly as Bea questioned her motives. Yeah, she had nearly given her friend a heart attack just for some orange juice in the middle of the night. Thankfully Bea was understanding. Maybe exhaustion was making her find the situation hilarious too, but whatever the cause was, Este was grateful for it. Someone else may have been a bit more liberal with that bat, but thankfully Bea was understanding.Â
âYeah right,â Este scoffed, âYouâd so never sneak in just for orange juice in the middle of the night.â She smiled widely at Beaâs suggestion, âActually... yeah, letâs.â Este handed over the bottle of OJ and then walked over to the rack of hopefully clean dishes to grab cups for the two of them. âI managed to finish my work so... why not?â Looking over her shoulder at Beatrice she asked softly and with concern, âYou werenât sleeping, were you? You got down here pretty fast....at least I think.â Maybe she just hadnât been aware of the time when she snuck in since her full focus was just on the OJ, but to Este, it seemed like Beaâs response was quick.
ofgclds:
she watched with barely-hidden wonder as Estrella reached in to her purse for the spare coins. talk about generous â most wouldâve looked at her funny and gone on their merry way, even in her desperation. she grimaced. â i hope so. â the coins slipped into the machine. for several moments Casey uttered a quick apology, a goodbye and I love you before clicking the handset down once more. â sorry. but thanks for helping me out. â the coins she didnât use were held back out. â youâre gonna laugh, maybe. i forgot to pay my phone bill and now itâs cut off. and she really wanted to talk to me about something, so, â she gave a nonchalant shrug. â here i am. â
her haste was evident by the thin jacket thrown over the top of pyjamas. the combination looked ridiculous, even more so when paired with the ratty sneakers sheâd pulled on. she pulled at the jacket around her. â itâs really cold. you wanna go for coffee, or something? â
Estrella waited patiently a few steps away from the phone as Casey made her call. The crisp fall, practically winter, air made her pull her coat a little more tightly around herself as she watched some dry leaves flutter down the street. It struck her how eerie this place seemed at night, so quiet and scarcely lit. Thankfully Caseyâs small voice pulled her out of her dismal thoughts.Â
âOh, no problem.â Estrella smiled loftily at the small handful of coins before her gaze rose to meet Caseyâs.âYou can keep those for next time, donât worry about it.â She listened to Caseyâs explanation and smiled slowly. âOh dear... well itâs good you called her anyways. Iâm sure she appreciates the effort.âÂ
Este was doing her best not to comment on the pj bottoms Casey was wearing. She nodded quickly in agreement with coffee. âYeah, that sounds nice.â As they turned to head towards the nearest coffee joint, Este frowned softly at Casey. âYou look freezing, how much of a hurry were you in?â
philipmcgee:
Although he really did want to leave and never see her again, he knew he couldnât. She seemed to be the only one qualified enough to help him, which meant he needed her. It was muttering something that Philip let himself fall loudly on a chair, letting his fingers drum on the table. He didnât know what impact he had on her, or even if he did at all, but he sincerely hoped he did. Surely he couldnât knock enough sense into her so sheâd become the perfect customer, but maybe sheâd become a little less rude. Itâd be a good start. Letting out a sigh, he stopped his fingers, looking up just in time to see her picking up her order. He didnât say anything,, just stared at her until sheâd spot him. And if she didnât, then heâd just leave, he wasnât going to chase after her. Not today.
Turning to look around the restaurant once she had grabbed her food, Este was surprised to see Philip still here. He still looked irritated but hey, he had stuck around which said a lot. Obviously traveling was important to him if he was willing to put up with Estrellaâs annoying tendencies to learn more about it. She headed over and sat across the table from him quietly. Taking two satchels of sugar and tearing them open, Este looked at Philip and inquired gently, âSo... youâve really never left Hawkins?â Of course, she had to be a little annoying and continue. âEver? Not even for a day trip?â
elliottwhitley:
His eyes lifted from the menu as she started to speak. It became evident rather quickly he was not going to need it, and he just put it back where it originally was. Clearly, she knew this place like the back of her hand, which put a smile on his lips. And then, it just turned into a small laugh as he tried to place a word but was cut off. Elliott even waited a few seconds after her speech, just to make sure she was done for real this time. âI have a sweet tooth, so I would not be against starting with the dessert. Or really only eating dessert. Tell me, how good is the chocolate cake here?â In fact, he wasnât even sure they had a chocolate cake, but if they had, there was no way he could resist it. He knew that was bad for him, but everyone had a guilty pleasure, and his was chocolate cake.
Estrella smiled when he suggested earing dessert only. Probably not a healthy choice but a fun one none the less. âItâs pretty decent, not my absolute favorite but good for a chocolate fix.â A short chuckle sounded from her throat as she glanced at Elliotâs arms then asked, âHow do you stay in shape with a sweet tooth? That sounds like a herculean task.â He was undoubtedly fit and Este wouldnât have guessed that he had a soft spot for sweets.
jettsetlife:
shrugging when asked his opinion of hawkins, jett wasnât sure whether he should give his honest answer or one he had been forcing out to strangers when it came to how he felt about his new enviornment. nobody wanted to know what he really thought of the town anyways, right? this was all just a setup when it came to getting to know one another. âi mean, itâs way different from new york,â jett stated the obvious, setting his coffee cup down as he considered getting something to eat after all. âkinda quiet, but i guess some people like that. where did you live before you came here?â the dark haired male asked, wondering if estrella could relate to him at all. âiâm jett,â the male extended one hand out for estrella.Â
At the mention of New York, Estrellaâs eyes lit up. She smiled and nodded knowingly, her time in New York was tumultuous and wonderful and drastically different than her time in Hawkins. âItâs nice to meet you, Jett,â she said politely as she gave his hand a brisk shake.  âIâve lived in a few different places, New York and Chicago being the biggest cities though I went to college in a smaller one. Thatâs where I lived before Hawkins.â She gave Jett a small smile and spoke wistfully, âNew York always had a special place in my heart though. I moved there right after I graduated high school.âÂ
rosanadl:
Her hands clapped together at Estrellaâs reaction, a grin spreading quickly on her lips. âI knew youâd agree, youâre the best!â she said excitedly, although she did calm down. Lately, it felt like any form of happiness was considered out of place here. âWell, thereâs so much doom and gloom lately, weâll have to go just about everywhere we can.â
Estrella couldnât help smiling when Rosana said she was the best. Subconsciously when Este made Rosana happy it felt a little like making up for all the moments she wasnât around to make her actual child happy. Did it mean that she spoiled Rosana more than she should to try and keep in her good graces? Absolutely. âAgreed.â Este shuffled in her purse to find her pocket-sized planner. âI need new winter boots, so we have to visit a few shoe stores⊠probably last so we donât have to carry the boxes around.â
