“It will be quick. We get the milk and leave.”
José had a rational reason to go to the market.
Panchito had another -more exciting- reason. It was the first time as a couple that they went grocery shopping.
And that was a first to celebrate!
Therefore, a five-minute stop ended up taking longer.
“Look, it’s on sale!” Panchito exclaimed, dragging José by the arm as soon as they stepped in the market.
“Oh, and we should get this as well!” Panchito rapidly added a product to the basket.
José nodded nonchalantly. Every idea Panchito came up with was a good idea, he decided.
Soon their basket was filled with a lot of things before either of them noticed.
“Isn’t it wonderful? Just the two of us grocery shopping?” Panchito asked with a big grin.
José raised his eyebrow. He noticed that Panchito was incredibly excited by the thought of grocery shopping, but didn’t understand what he was particularly delighted about it.
“Yes. Very romantic, isn’t it?” José joked. Panchito rolled his eyes but still smiled.
“You know what I mean.”
“Actually, I am not sure. Why are you so excited about this?”
“It’s the first time we go grocery shopping as a couple.” He explained, picking yet another item to add to the basket.
“Hmm,” José thought for a second. “No, it’s not.”
“What?”
“Remember when we stopped at a market after coming back from America?”
Panchito almost facepalmed.
“That wasn’t grocery shopping. You went there to get a bottle of water and a bag of chips!”
“It was grocery shopping in my book. And we did it together.” José said with a smile. He received a sigh from Panchito, but the other was still smiling.
Gently getting closer to his boyfriend, José held his hand. “Seriously, though,” He added, now caressing Panchito’s hand. “You are so sweet,”
In a heartbeat, Panchito got distracted from the products on the aisle and looked brightly at José.
“Small moments like these are just really nice,” Panchito announced, a little flustered as he rubbed the back of his head. He returned to the aisle, his interests coming back. “Do you want to bake something with me?”
“Sure. What do you want to bake?”
“Maybe a cake, I thought it could be fun.”
José nodded and Panchito picked up the bag of flour but refused to put it in the basket.
“Do you want me to hold the basket? It looks heavy?” He asked.
José looked at the basket he was holding. He hasn’t realized how many items they already had.
“ It’s fine. Not that heavy.”
Panchito however, still didn’t want to add the bag of flour to the basket.
“I can hold it, José. I’ll carry the bag and even the basket if you want.”
“I am fine.” José held Panchito’s hand again. “If you carry both, we can’t hold hands and I’ll be sad.”
Panchito laughed but agreed. José had a good point, besides, they were about to head to the checkout.
So, they got to the cash register and paid for their items.
By the time they finished their small stop at the market, the sun was already starting to set.
They walked slowly home, arms enlaced together.
“Hm, now that I think about it,” José wondered. “Did we buy milk?”
“You mean the only reason we left home in the first place?” Panchito laughed. “No.”
