He asked the magic question to Runa, in an instant her eyes lit up and she completely sucked herself into her own research.
âThereâs so much history! Actually itâs why Iâm on the boat, the next town has some old documents that more or less give a location of where an island disappeared into the sea near by and I want to try to pull together a team of specialists to help me explore the ruins underwater.â It wasnât directly related to her personal search but tere may be a clue to her background from this small island. âI have to get enough proof that it is there before I can get a team to start helping me though.â
She caught the back end of an order about the rigging, it sounded different than the crew had been shouting back and forth for the past minute.
There was a weird smell to the air and the boat suddenly shuddered as a strong wave slapped against the bow.
âAh hell, a squall.â Her lip curled and she moved forward. âCome with me, thereâs no time to get you down below.âÂ
Yuri listened as she explained and his lips parted to give a soft laugh as he admired her passion. âSo you believe there really is an underwater island?â He was barely able to get the question out before he found himself straining to listen to the commotion.
ââ a squall?â Brow knit, the young boy faltered forward to follow. He wrapped his arms around himself as he peered around to question the sudden change in atmosphere.
âThe sea is a marvelous place to be, I wish I had more of a chance to do my research near the water.â She paused listening to a call that came across deck, after verifying it didnât include her she resumed conversation. âMost of my money goes into permits, travel and research. Iâm a lost history Hunter, it comes with the territory. Money only comes in when you make a significant discovery.â
She also dumped a lot of money into her own personal research which didnât result in gaining any of her money back.Â
âWhat brings you out to sea?â
Yuriâs interest shifted from the open water to the woman as she spoke, but it seemed as though she was very much invested in it herself. Â âSounds like it really keeps you busy. Is there history in the ocean?â He questioned with renewed curiosity.
âIâm meeting someone in the next town.â He explained simply.
ââ-â âA carpenter?â Eyes glances back at the boy as slender fingers trail over the wood, dipping into the grooves as childish curiosity fills him.Â
âI guess I wouldnât expect something soâŚcool to come from a carpenter.â he laughs gently, finally sitting all the way back up as he leaves the boyâs legs alone. âSo, how do they work? And when you outgrow them, what happens then?â Killua doesnât so many questions so fast in a long while, but he couldnât help but to be intruiged. He could remove limbs with a flick of his wrist, but he never thought about making them.
âYou canât underestimate the skills of a carpenter.â Yuri smirked and rocked back on his heels for emphasis. He stilled only to answer his question and bending slightly, the boy pointed out a piece at the inner section.
âInstead of getting new ones I can jus adjust these for height. I grew a lot since I got them so itâs better this way.â
ââ-â A small laugh slips through his lips as  Killua leans down to get a better look, finding the wooden prosthetics very intriguing. âWas your mentor some sorta master prosthetic maker?â He wasnât quite sure if those actually existed.
âSo you can walk on them all normal and everything?â he asks, glancing up to the other boy. âCan I touch âem?â
âMore like master carpenter!â Yuri was thoroughly charmed by the genuine curiosity. It was admirable. âMmh, theyâve been perfect since day one. I wonât outgrow these in a few years either. Theyâre really something.â
He straightened his posture and nodded to give him the okay. âGo ahead, they arenât fragile.â
++@etchedcurio
ââ-â âWell theyâre certainly neat.â
Killua glances over the prosthetics again, certainly the handiwork of a master crafter. The small looming thought of Gon needing a prosthetic is out of his mand as quickly as it entered. He smiles softly. âWhereâd you get âem at?â
Yuri shifted his ankle against the ground and twisted his leg slightly to offer a better look at their craftsmanship. He was more than willing to indulge the younger boyâs curiosity. âThey were crafted by my mentor. Absolutely one  â ah, two of a kind.â
âWell if you go over, Iâll try to rescue you then. But the weather looks good so I donât think we need to worry.â She gave him a comforting smile. âFor this trip I do, when youâre a dirt poor Hunter sometimes you have to pick up side jobs to get from point A to B.â
Granted she could borrow money from the Hunters Association, but that never sat right with her. Unless she desperately needed money she tended to leave that line of credit alone, thereâd be one or two times when sheâd used that money. And that was all in the name of research.
Yuri offered a sheepish smile in thanks to the promise. He trusted her judgement completely. âItâs so refreshing.â He took in a deep breath and exhaled in a short sigh.
âYouâre a hunter?â His smiled widened, his excitement evident in his expression. The fact that she would describe herself as poor came as a bit of a surprise. Licensed hunters had plenty of perks, didnât they? âA poor hunter, huh...?â
First meeting {Sentence Starters}
"Pretty quiet place, isn't it?"
"Can I pet your dog?"
"I love your ____! Where did you get it?"
"Didn't know anybody else was here."
"Sorry, is this seat taken?"
"You haven't seen this ____ anywhere, have you?"
"Wow, this line's really long isn't it?"
"So, you come here often?"
"Yeah, can I help you with something?"
"What do you usually order when you come here?"
"So- weather's pretty nice."
"I'm so sorry! I didn't see you!"
"Don't suppose you know where to get a great meal around here?"
"Can you tell me how to get to ____?"
"Mind if I share your umbrella for a minute?"
"Hi! I just need you to pretend like you know me!"
"You need directions or something?"
"This seat's open!"
"Haven't seen you around. Need something?"
"Um, hi. How long have you been standing there?"
"Don't ask, just run!"
âI wanted to go someplace new.â Â It was strange to see another kid. Â Gon noticed the boyâs hair and clothes.. maybe the other was from a rural situation like himself. Â âThis place seemed nice.â Â
If it wasnât for Gonâs Hunterâs License, he might have been shot already. Â
âSomeplace new. Like exploring...?â That was exactly what he intended to do himself one of these days. Hearing that someone so young was traveling around was quite inspiration to the boy. âAre you an explorer?â
Runa grunted as she pulled a rigging line tighter and tied it off, sailing hadnât been a free ride and being as dirt poor meant working off her trip.
Her mismatched eyes caught the sight of one of the passengers that had been staying fairly close to the center of the ship.Â
âDeep enough youâre gonna want to know how to swim and deep enough that youâre going to want to someone to know if you go over.â She responded to his question. âItâs calm enough for you to be safe near the railings, you should feel the wind from there.â
Runa had grown up in a seaport, sailing ships was something she picked up on quickly and used to her advantage as much as she could.Â
Yuri perked up to the sound of the voice and glanced over at the woman. He tapped his chin and tilted his head slightly while he listened, brow furrowed with slight concern.
âI donât know how to swim.â He gave a gentle laugh and quietly hoped for smooth sailing, as they say. âI think Iâll enjoy the view from where I am.â Peering up at her, the boy noted the dissemblance of her eyes. âDo you work on the ship?â

I donât like pity. Pity makes you feel small and weak. Iâd rather have someone hate me than pity me.
Marco, Book #15: The Escape, pg. 98 (by K.A. Applegate)
The shard scattered into microscopic, shimmering particles, surrounding the two of them. For now, they did nothing and best be equated to harmless dust.
Misae brought up her hand to examine the deepened cut on her palm. âMmmm,â she hummed, âBut I was merely starting.â
Once fractured glass, those same particles closed in around his throat, seeping into his unmarked skin. They settled inside, making their presence very known, almost sanding his throat raw.
The relief he felt was incredibly short lived. Yuriâs eyes widened as prickling shards of glass embedded themselves in his throat, the sensation causing him to sputter and choke. He reached with shaking fingers to touch his throat, nearly clawing at it from the shock. Deep red marks adorned his pale skin as he scratched, but to no avail. âAâAahw...â
A wet, gurgling sound was all that he could manage. His instincts, clearly stunted, finally kicked in and the boy used his shaking legs in an attempt to escape. He ran past her, nearly stumbling several times in the process.
It was a mild smile, but that was perhaps the most she could ever smile in any circumstance. She liked to smile too, but she never forced it. The feelings that went along with it made her feel alive and have a sense of warmth in the empty husk she called a body. Her twin tried everything else to get an ounce of emotion out of her, but it was only when it ended in failureâ and her twinâs disappointment that would urge a spark.
Then it escalated to fear and misery. The boyâs face brought back a rare memory, a girl that would occupy her dear twinâs time every now and then. Her face was the same.
âWill you lose something else? Your body seems to be not working correctly. You havenât moved. Did you lose your voice too?â
Yuri wanted so badly to reach up and covers his ears. A childish attempt, but he was not beyond such tactics despite knowing that it would hardly save him from her. He was unable to bite back the short whine that escaped him as he parted his lips to speak. Tears were welling in his eyes as he tried desperately not to blink.
âSh-shut up... Please, just... stop.â
