**flashback**
The day that you met Oscar Piastri, was the day that your life changed for the better. That fateful day in August, the very first day of kindergarten in a different country, you remember the way your seven year old self clutched the straps of your backpack that was a little too big for you, but you could eventually grow into it.
You also seem to remember the initial nervousness you felt whenever you walked into your classroom, picturing the bright and colorful atmosphere of the classroom, drawings on a bulletin board, alphabet posters everywhere, and a big circle rug right in the middle of the floors. That same nervousness and fear you felt, immediately washed away when a bright and brown eyed little boy approached your table and sat next to you, a wide grin on his face.
“I haven’t seen you around at all, are you new?” the little boy asked, a strong Australian accent prominent in his voice, tilting his head curiously at you. You nodded your head, “I am new, my parents and I moved here from the United States, my dad got a new job here, he wanted to move back here to home, he’s from Australia.” You said, nervously.
The little boy nodded, “I’m Oscar, Oscar Jack Piastri, nice to meet ya!” he chirped out, a wide smile on his face.
Your initial fear and nervousness washed away, shaking his hand in return, “I’m y/n!” you said with a bright smile. Oscar smiled back wider and said, “I’ve got some sour gummy worms in my lunch box here if you want to share? You’re my best friend now, because I said so.” He said with a smile, holding out the bag of sour gummy worms to you.
You accepted his gesture and took two gummy worms out of the bag, popping them into your mouth. “I guess we are best friends now, Oscar!” you said, a warm smile on your face. Ever since that fateful day, you and Oscar were absolutely inseparable.
You and Oscar went through many stages and many phases in your life, from your early primary school years to those awkward middle school years, with puberty hitting both of you, your first patches of acne and those pesky braces that stayed for 2 years before high school started for you both, and then experiencing first crushes and heartbreaks together, even your monthly midnight quarter-life crisis episodes where you felt the need to dye your hair nearly every color of the rainbow.
Even with everything you both went through, one thing always remained, your tight-knit bond with each other. You and Oscar have both supported each other through nearly everything. You can remember spending weekends with Oscar’s family whenever you were all at the karting track, watching Oscar race at a young age. You also remember Oscar and his family standing with your family whenever you had an art exhibit at an art show.
You can even remember the day Oscar came bursting into your apartment with happy tears streaming down his face, saying he officially got scouted into Formula One, after years of putting his nose into the grindstone in Formula 3, Formula 2 and finally, finally making it into the big league, Formula One and getting signed with his current team, McLaren, taking the next seat to his teammate, Lando Norris.
PRESENT DAY
You and Oscar both had amazing and fulfilling careers, you as a world renowned artist, your name being next to legends like Warhol, Picasso, Kahlo and Dali and Oscar, a nine-time Formula One Grand Prix winner and the newest recipient for the WDC. Both of you are like night and day, Oscar was a huge extrovert, instantly lighting up a room with his warm demeanor and easy-going personality, and you, a well-known introvert with also a kind demeanor, but you were more reserved and quiet than Oscar was. Oscar was taller than you by 6 inches, he was 5’10” and you were 5’4”.
Oscar was muscular, athletic and fit by the naked eye, you were more curvier, and had supple skin, a tummy that slightly bulged and thick thighs that filled out your clothes and faint stretchmarks on your stomach, thighs and even arms.
However, the both of you worked very well together as best friends. Bonded by the years of friendships and the number of experiences you two faced together.
Most of the Formula One grid knew who you were, since Oscar joined, he’s brought you along to many races and even had you as a plus one to team dinners, his close friends on the grid adopting you into the circle within an instant and even being a familiar face in the Mclaren garages and Mclaren HQ.
You were a primary part of Oscar’s friend circle, it involved you, Oscar, Lando, Lando’s girlfriend Sarah, Max Verstappen, Logan Sargeant (a former F1 driver and Oscar’s longtime karting buddy), Charles LeClerc, Charles’s wife Alexandra, George Russell, George’s girlfriend Carmen and even some of your artist friends, Sophia, and Charlie.
You loved your friends, more than anything, you felt lucky beyond measure. Although, you could not help but to notice the stark contrast between you and your group of friends. The girls within your friend group were built like models. Beautiful, slim and slightly taller than you. The guys, muscular and fit, from years of training or working out for fun. You tended to feel out of place sometimes, and even nit-picked at yourself for being different.
But recently, the atmosphere within the group began to shift, for you at least. You recently have started to notice the comments some of your friends made, they may have been making these comments before, but you didn’t seem to notice at first, but now? You finally noticed.
One day, you had just finished working on your next painting for your exhibition the following month. You haven’t ate anything all day, because you were hyperfocused on finishing the painting. You opened your phone to text the group chat you and Oscar were in with your friends.
Y/N; Just finished my second painting for the exhibit next month, and realized I haven’t ate anything since starting this morning. Would you guys or any of you like to grab dinner with me if you aren’t busy?
Within 5 minutes of sending the message, you get a few responses.
Sophia; Y/N, is that your only way of fun with us? Literally all you want to do is grab food.
Alexandra; as long as we go somewhere that has lighter options for me, I don’t care.
Charlie; Second dinner isn’t an option for me lol.
You felt a slight pang in your chest, reading these messages. You were used to this, anytime you offer to get food with any of your friends, comments like these are made. You pretend to not be affected by it, laughing it off or deflecting the subject to something else. You shake off the sadness, and go out for dinner by yourself, going to your favorite cafe that serves a killer chicken caesar wrap and dill-pickle flavored potato chips.
Over the next few months, your insecurities began to worsen. Which in turn, caused your text messages to your group chat to be shorter, you excluding yourself from group plans, and even shrinking yourself down when you are in group settings, in which those Oscar drags you to. The group continues to make passive-aggressive comments whenever you’re around, and you’d just laugh it off, thinking you found it funny too, when in reality, it chipped away your confidence and happiness.
The group thought they were joking with you, taking those comments as light-hearted banter. Except one person, the one person who knew you better than most, even knew you better than yourself.. Oscar.
Oscar was a very perceptive person when it came to the people he loved and cared about, especially you. Oscar noticed the small signs you started to show, the shorter messages, your body language when you were around the group, the self-exclusion of group plans.. Everything. Oscar knew the real you. He knew you as the kind-hearted and reserved girl, he could tell if your laugh was forced, even your smile too. He could also catch the way your shoulders fell whenever a comment was said about you, even smaller details such as the way your eyebrows shaped when you were sad, and even when your gaze was pointed downward. Seeing you shrink yourself down into the version of yourself that wasn’t yourself, gutted him to his core.
This went on for months, until one night, Oscar genuinely couldn’t take it anymore. He missed seeing his usually warm-hearted, happy best friend, and he hated the way you were now. He hated seeing you fake your happiness around the group, he hated seeing you take the barrage of comments thrown your way, he hated seeing you shrink yourself to nothing.
Tonight, Oscar had dragged you to the LeClerc penthouse, he begged you to come hang out with everyone. You reluctantly accepted. You had picked out your outfit meticulously, you decided on an oversized, washed out Queen band shirt, light-washed baggy jeans, black and white Vans and pairing it with a matching jean jacket, even putting light waves in your hair to give it that effortless look, and even wearing light makeup, subtle, but visible. You looked at yourself in the mirror and smiled at yourself for the first time in months, you looked put together and cool. Even Oscar smiled wide when he picked you up in his Mclaren.
“You look fucking cool, Y/N. You always have such a great style.” He said, with a soft smile on his face, that compliment made your heart slightly flip, (which will be mentioned later).
You and Oscar both arrived at the elegant penthouse building Charles and Alexandra lived in. You both walked in and saw everyone there. Alexandra, Carmen, Sophia and Sarah were all sitting in a circle, lost in conversation, George, Lando, Max, Charles, Logan and Charlie laughing and cursing as they were playing Spades, you could hear Max curse in a mix of English and Dutch.
I immediately felt my anxiety raise, feeling myself getting tenser by the second. Oscar immediately noticed and put his hand on the small of my back, a soothing gesture he always did whenever he could sense I was getting uncomfortable.
“Y/N, it’s okay.. I’m here, I got you. If it gets unbearable, tell me and we’ll leave okay?” He whispered in my ear, reassuring me softly. I nodded in response, a small smile on my face. Oscar smiled back, ignoring the flutter in his own chest when he saw you smile back at him.
I sat next to Oscar as the girls turned to me. They hadn’t seen me in a while, but they smiled when they saw me. “Y/N hey! It’s been too long since you came to a group hangout!” Carmen said, the rest of the girls nodded.
“Ah yeah, you know how it is.. Being an artist and getting hyper-focused on finishing pieces. It takes up most of your time.” I laughed sheepishly, “Luckily I was finally able to squeeze in some time to come tonight.” I said, slightly lying, but more than enough to cover up.
“Well we’re happy you finally got some free time tonight, we missed you.” Alexandra said, as she held Leo, her and Charles’s dachshund. “There’s still some food left if you’re still hungry.” She added, passive aggressively.
I felt another pang hit me, but I shook it off, covering up “Yeah thanks, I haven’t eaten all day.” I said, smiling weakly, as I got up to grab the last bit of food, which was a bit of chicken salad dip and crackers, and some grapes on the side.
“I definitely couldn’t eat this late at night, it would be embarrassing.” Carmen added. Another pang sent through me, which caused me to immediately shrink down. Oscar noticed, his jaw slightly ticking at Alexandra and Carmen’s comments.
When I was out of earshot, the rest of the girls began talking, comments being thrown. “How could she eat this late at night, as much as she does throughout the day?” “No wonder why she is as big as a balloon.” “Maybe if she didn’t have a manly appetite, she would be prettier.” “No wonder why she wears oversized shirts as much as she does, she wants to hide that abysmal gut of hers. It’s disgusting.” as these comments were followed by snickers and laughs. “I don’t understand why Oscar still brings her around, she doesn’t exactly fit in, and she doesn’t even fit through doors with those wide hips of hers.”
I was standing in the kitchen, talking with Max and George who came in for drinks, when all of a sudden I heard a fist slam down on the table, a noticeable voice breaking through the large space of the penthouse.
“SHUT THE FUCK UP.” the voice bellowed out, it was Oscar. I looked up, startled, like everyone else. Oscar looked like he was one breath away from raging even further, he was gritting his teeth and his nostrils were flared, his body language very obvious.
Oscar, still absolutely livid, found his voice again and spoke up, “I have had QUITE enough of the passive comments about Y/N and now all of a sudden you cunts are making DIRECT jabs at her?!” he snapped. “For months, I’ve had to endure hearing these nasty comments. Especially Y/N, do you think that she doesn’t notice what you say around her? You guys ever notice why she doesn’t ever come around much anymore unless I drag her out here? Or why her messages are getting shorter, or why she continues to shrink herself down into nothing around us?” He said, his voice continuing to raise.
“Y/N is a much stronger person than me it seems. If I was in her shoes, I’d have you all cut off the second someone made a nasty comment about me.” He said
He turned to the other girls, his cool almost slipping by the second, “Do you not realize what your words do to someone’s mental health? You guys might think it’s just light-hearted banter but in reality, its cruelness wrapped in the form of a joke. It may not be deep to you guys, but considering you cunts have the emotional intelligence of a rock, but to her? To Y/N? Those comments shatter her. Those words stick to her mind and to her soul, and she continues to believe she’s not enough because she’s not slim like you? You call her disgusting because she’s not slim, but in reality.. She is a hundred times more of a woman than you will ever be. Y/N has the one thing you guys don’t, substance.” He said coldly.
Alexandra, Carmen, Sophia and Sarah were all stunned and visibly afraid of Oscar’s state, guilt washing all over them, realizing the damage that I had to take. Their shoulders were slumped and their gazes faced downward, realizing they went too far and that the damage was done.
“From now on, the rest of the grid here, we are no longer friends, we are only colleagues at this point. You have lost my genuine respect.” Oscar said, firmly, “We only talk business. That’s it.”
My heart swelled at Oscar’s defending me so firmly. I walked up to him, putting my hand on his arm, a gesture that always grounded him when he was upset. Oscar turned to me, his demeanor immediately softening at the sight of me. “Let’s go Osc, I don’t wanna be here anymore.” I whispered
Oscar nodded, “Yeah, let’s get the hell out of here, Y/N.” he said softly, grabbing my hand and the both of us walking out.
We got in his car once more, he pushed the ignition to start, the Mclaren engine purring to life, he shifted the gear to Drive, and we pulled away from the building.
Oscar broke the silence, he spoke up. “Y/N, I am so sorry I didn’t say anything sooner.” He said, weakly, “I got sick and tired of seeing you shrink yourself down into nothing because of them. I was trying to be civil because of them being colleagues. But now? I realize that they don’t really matter to me, they never did.”
My breath hitched at his words, “Osc, it’s okay.. really..” I said sadly
Oscar fervently shook his head at my words, “No, it’s not okay. They were being nasty towards you, they made you feel like you weren’t important or you didn’t matter. You shouldn’t be expected to tolerate disrespect. Because it’s destroying your mental health.” He said, his voice firm, but not harsh.
“It gutted me to see you make yourself fade away like that.” he paused, putting the car in park as he took a breath, a shaky one, turning to face me now, “You may see yourself as not enough, or too much of this or that, and you continue to compare yourself to everyone else. But I need you to understand something.”
He paused again, steeling his nerves and taking a breath, “When I see you… I see a woman that is.. kind, driven, persistent, smart, damn talented, amazing, caring.. and beautiful.” he said the last part, softly. “You are so beautiful that when I look at you, my chest hurts in the best way possible. Your smile? Literally makes my heart flip and go warm and it spreads throughout my entire body.” He paused, laughing softly.
“Your smile? Can light up any room that you walk into. Your laugh? Absolutely contagious.”
My breath hitched in my throat at his words, “Oscar..” I said softly, he shook his head “Let me finish, please.” he said, I nodded.
“The thought of you drives me absolutely mad, Y/N. My thoughts are consumed by you. Day in and day out. I cannot sit here and pretend to see you as a best friend anymore because it’s never been that way for me. God, since we were both 16, I haven’t been able to shake you out of my thoughts. I’ve tried to date other girls to get over you, because I didn’t believe I had a single chance with you. None of those dates worked out because none of them were YOU.” he said softly.
“If you don’t feel the same, I can eventually move past the rejection and we can go back to being best friends. But I couldn’t sit here another fucking second without telling you that I am absolutely and utterly gone for you.” He finished, tears welling in his eyes.
Tears were welling up into my eyes, my brain was fuzzy at his words and my heart was close to beating right out of my chest from how hard it was slamming against my ribs. The silence was deafening. I finally found my voice.
“Oscar.. you.. you have no idea how long i’ve waited for this.” I said softly “God Osc, i’ve been in love with you since we were 16 too.. I just didn’t think I had a chance with you either..”
Oscar didn’t say a word, he reached over and cupped my face, his thumb caressing my cheek and he leaned over, brushing his lips against mine and our breaths mingling.
“Tell me to stop, and I will,” He whispered against my lips, his lips curling into a soft smile
“Don’t stop,” I whispered back. Then, Oscar’s control snapped, crashing his lips fully onto mine, he had been like a dog on a leash waiting to be released, and the minute the clip snapped, he full sent into me.
I gasped against his lips, but instantly bounced back as I kissed him back, my eyes fluttering shut and I melted into him. We could feel every nerve ending in our bodies sparkling up and catching on fire. I gripped his biceps, my soft hands wrapping around the hard muscle.
Oscar groaned against my lips, deepening the kiss. His tongue swiping across my bottom lip, begging for access. I gasped against his lips, my mouth parting slightly open as he slipped his tongue in my mouth, licking and exploring the cavern of my mouth and colliding his tongue with mine.
My teeth grazed against his bottom lip, eliciting a groan from Oscar, I swallowed his groan as I continued to kiss him back hungrily. Finally, after what felt like forever, we finally pulled away, our foreheads resting against one another, our gazes half lidded and lazy smiles on our faces.
“Definitely worth the wait.” Oscar said weakly, pressing a kiss on the corner of my mouth.
I hummed in content, my eyes fluttering shut at his sweet gesture. “Yeah.. definitely worth the years of pining.” I whispered
Oscar laughed breathlessly, “Now, no more of that yeah? You’re mine.” He said as he pulled away, bringing my hand to his lips, kissing my knuckles softly as he held my hand gently and then kissing me again, but this time, the kiss was soft and full of love, no hunger or heat behind it.
“I am forever yours now, Osc.” I whispered against his lips, smiling softly.
From that day on, Oscar no longer had to wait for the right one. Because he finally got the right girl and his dream girl in one, his longtime, beautiful bestfriend.. now his girlfriend.
Now the world knew, Oscar Jack Piastri, a Formula One world champion driver, was hopelessly and utterly gone for his talented and beautiful best friend.
