“Sadly, no. Not on the coast,” she answered, her lips poked out in the smallest of pouts. “Although Manhattan is /technically/ an island, it’d actually be kind of disrespectful towards the ocean if I were to equate the Hudson to it,” she added. “I guess the city has other perks though.”

Ethan shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve never really lived in anywhere that could be considered a big city so I guess I’m not really allowed to have an opinion on it. I can’t imagine I’d enjoy it more than here though.”

“So you’re gong to punish the poor sap just because they decided to turn you down? I feel like having you hit on them is enough punishment without you taking their drink too.”

she shrugged her shoulders and nodded her head in a silent agreement and moved closer to lay out her blanket. she sat on the edge and buried her feet in the sand before laying back and closing her eyes, listening to the beach as it sang to her. “i get it.” she whispered quietly before opening one eyes and searching for his figure in the dark. “do you try to go outside at night often? or is this just because you are on a beach?”

He leaned back, resting his weight on his palms. “I like to look at the stars,” he smiled at her. “It definitely is more encouraging to come out because there is a beach here. It’s just not the same looking up in the middle of a city with all that light pollution. And I guess the sound of cars isn’t quite as relaxing as the sound of waves.”

“you’re kidding?!” she jokingly gasped, pretending to be worried but the playful demeanor was cut short by a light chuckle. “i’m willing to sacrifice my own glass. perhaps i’ll find someone kind enough to share,”

“Did you not read the handbook that we were given when we first arrived? It went over everything.” He shook his head in mock disappointment.

“No, I just didn’t know if you would actually have the balls to come.” she said pushing his chest playfully. Lydia put the shirt on herself, “So tell me, how are you liking it here so far?” she asked her brother.

He made a face of her, “I didn’t realise the status of my balls were any of your concern.” Ethan considered the question for a second, “no one has tried to stab me yet, so I guess I’m enjoying it.”

It came as a surprise to him that Ethan would even think of the show as a possibility for himself. He was just so nice, all the competition that happened in the Island just didn’t seem to be his thing but he was glad to see him again after so long. Once he broke up with his sister, he figured that the male wouldn’t want to have him around as much so this was a chance for them to spend more time together. “Sounds like something she’d do, she seems to like it here.” He told him, his next question earning a shrug from him. “You know, i’m actually not sure but right now i’d say you’ve stepped into a warzone. We’re not really talking, she’s slightly bipolar. Changes her mind way too quickly.” 

Ethan raised his eyebrows at the statement. He had a feeling that there was some underlying connotation there, but at the same time, it was obvious that this was the kind of environment that Lydia thrived in. He winced a little upon hearing that they weren’t getting along. Picking sides was never ran issue, he was always on hers, but it made things slightly awkward. “She’s really not that bad. What did you do?”

nova smiled slightly as she nodded now sitting up as she turned her head to look at the male beside her, “it’s just a bit tiring yeah, not something i’m used to just yet.” she shook her head, “not quite everyone but just enough to show i’m not a total loner.” she laughed a bit, “but welcome to the island. i’m nova”

He nodded knowingly, being in the spotlight was never something he did well, that was more his sister’s thing. “At least we don’t have access to social media, so you don’t have to think about what people are saying. I think it’s pretty impossible to be a loner when you live in a house with so many other people. It’s been lovely meeting you, Nova, I’m Ethan.”

Ethan couldn’t hold in the laugh at the boy’s lame pickup line. “Please tell me that you haven’t used that on anyone yet.” He shook his head, a smile still on his face. “I don’t think you’re going to pick anyone up with that line.”

as she walked closer, she stood a foot away from him. “well mr. nocturnal, is it okay that i sit here?” she questioned holding out her blanket. “you can sit on my blanket too. i’m sure it’s big enough.” adeline hoped that he would say yes, she didn’t want to be alone after not being able to sleep well. and the sound of the subtle waves seed to help calm her, more.

He blinked in surprise at her question. It seemed obvious to Ethan that if someone was out here this late, it was because they wanted to be alone. “Y-yeah sure.” He gestured at the spot next to him. “I don’t mind the sand,” he said with a smile. “It’s kind of just been a staple in my life. It’s kind of soothing I guess,” he chuckled softly.

The last person he expected to see in the show was Ethan. He couldn’t even remember the last time he saw him, the break up with his sister kind of pushed the two away for a while - the only way of contact being through social media and texting so seeing him in person was kinda nice. Eric stood up when his name was called and his eyes rested on the male, offering him a smile. “Dudeee, what are you doing here?” He asked, just out of habit as he was quick enough to pull him into a hug, his hand patting his back gently. “Does Lydia know you’re here yet?” 

Lydia hadn’t mentioned to Ethan that her ex-boyfriend would also be on the show, but he supposed that wasn’t the sort of thing you told your big brother. The two boys had always gotten along, even after the breakup. He smiled as Eric engulfed him in a hug; he never found meeting strangers a daunting task, but it was nice to already have someone he knew around who wasn’t his sister. “She’s the one who convinced me to come, so I should hope so. I haven’t seen her yet though. Are you two getting along or have I just stepped into a warzone?”

Lydia finally looked up at the boy she was talking to, “ETHAN!” the girl screamed before giving him a huge hug, “I missed you so much, I’m so glad you’re here.” she said letting him go, “Listen I didn’t know you were here yet, this is the first time I am finding out.”

A grin spread across his features as she flung herself into him. He tightened his arms around her for a second. It’d been a while since they’d actually seen each other in person with him no longer living in the same state. “You’re the one who told me to go for it,” he laughed, “are you saying you didn’t think I would make it on?”

nova rolled onto her back as the male spoke, she shook her head finally opening her eyes and using her hand to block the sun from shining in them, “it’s fine don’t apologize i shouldn’t have snapped, it’s a beach obviously other people are going to be here.” she sighed a bit shaking her head, “your new right? like i haven’t seen you before so you must be.”

Ethan took the opportunity to sit down next to her so that she didn’t have to squint through the sun to look at him. He waved away her apology, “I’m sure being followed around all the time can be quite taxing.” He offered her a smile, “Yeah, I just arrived a day ago. I’m guessing you know everyone else pretty well?”

“no problem. it’s my pleasure, honestly. the last thing i’d want is for you to end up with some sort of injury because of something i did,” the female chuckled awkwardly, shaking her head. “hopefully not. i mean…i’m sure there’s plenty other glasses to go around, right?”

“You know, I actually heard that this year, there were budget cuts to the show, they could only afford one glass per contestant,” he joked.

it was late and adeline couldn’t sleep. normally she would just find a good book to read and let her mind go blank as she read. but tonight was different, she opened the window in her room and felt the warm breeze and the crashing of the waves. it was then she decided to make her way down to the beach. she grabbed a blanket and her flip flops, her over sized shirt hanging from her body and made her way down. she noticed another figure on the beach and tilted her head. “hello?” she called out quietly. as she got closer she noticed it was ethan. “oh, hey. you couldn’t sleep either?”

Staying in a new place was never the easiest thing for Ethan, despite having moved several times before, he never got used to it. In any case, he much preferred being awake at night than he did in the morning. He headed out to the beach that was now empty, a stark contrast to earlier that day. He lay down on the sand, resting his head in his hands and looked at the sky. Ethan thought he heard someone call out to him, but it was faint enough that he could dismiss it, it was too late for anyone else to be up. “Oh Adeline,” he turned his head to see the redhead. “Yeah, I’m kind of nocturnal.”

After not even being back on the island for very long, Naomi could already say with confidence that she was made for the hot rather than cold. Taking up an almost permanent residence along the beach, she relaxed on the shore just out of reach of the waves as she soaked up the sun. “I am totally in my element here,” she stated, eyes squinted as she glanced over towards the other person. “Like New York who? I was obviously made for the beach.”

Ethan looked over at the girl with a quizzical look. “Isn’t New York on the coast too? How are there no beaches there?” He couldn’t argue with her though, growing up in this environment meant that this was where he felt most comfortable. “Beaches do overrule big cities though.”
